Strategy/4x game in Asian setting

Post by GreenGoo »

Hi all,

Just recently watched Hero and Last Samurai and I've really got a hankering for some strategerizing in an Asian setting. I reinstalled Shogun: Total War and am having fun with it, but I think I'd prefer something with more indepth expansion and resource management, and lighter on the tactical combat.

Are there any strategy games sets in China or Japan that have been released in the last 5 years or so? Anything along the lines of expansion/conquer type games, with a decent resource model?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Two possibilities I can think of:
Shogun Total War. (not exactly 4X, though)
One of the Europa Universal games had an Asian expansion. It was released in a strategy six pack recently, though I haven't played it.

I never played any of them, but you might try one of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms RPGs.

Samurai. Always meant to try this game out, but it looks cool.

Edit: sorry it's not a 4x game, just a strategy game.
For motivation and so Jeff V can make me look bad:
2010 Totals: Biking: 65 miles Running: 393 miles
2009 Finals: Biking: 93 miles Running: 158 miles (I know it sucked, but I had a hernia most of the year)

It's probably not what you're looking for, but there's an RTS set in China called Fate of the Dragon.

You could try Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom. It's a builder type game similar to Ceasar, Zeus, Pharaoh, ect. I thought it was excellent.

Or you could grab a PSX emulator( www.epsxe.com ) and download the fabulous Romance of the Three Kingdoms VI from the underdogs website here:

Also, IV isn't bad either and it's for the PC and totally free!

If you've never played a romance game, the main goal is to conquer and unite China. You get to select one of the many rulers available and you achieve the goal by hiring officers(there are around 500-700 in the game), working the economy, diplomacy, espionage, and conquering cities. Combat in the game plays, more or less, like an advanced form of chess. I've been playing the series, which is at 10 now, since the 2nd came out(which ironically is my favorite and I still play till this day).

How is RotTK 10? I almost bought 9 a while ago, and I do want to get one of the PS2 versions.

I've been playing 10 like mad since I got it. Without a doubt it's one of the best and polished iterations of the series. I liked 9 but it just didn't feel a whole lot like a Romance game and that's why I sort of neglected it. And I wouldn't judge the game based on the reviews for romance 10 either, I made the mistake of thinking the game was sub-par, the low ratings are due to the fact that the game simply isn't geared for the average person, and well, it's challenging.

Anyway, I'm immensely enjoying 10 so far. I've been playing as Xu Huang, a well rounded officer with a war rating of 90, (now at 91 due to all the duels I've been in) and I've been fighting a very fierce battle back and forth with Yuan Shao. I serve under Liu Bei, and we only have two cities, and Yuan Shao continues to storm our northern city. We have to always resort to sending reinforcements from our southern city. This happened several times over the course of a few years before the city gave way and they took it. Well, not long after we mounted a desperate offensive to take it back, (we couldn't be forced to one city for fear of being exiled) we fought and won a hard battle there and managed to liberate it with heavy losses. Now, I have to build up my forces quickly(I was given control of the northern city, having previously governing the southern city) and I only hope Yuan Shao gives me enough time to do so because I don't think it's a question of if he'll attack but when. Fortunetly, we have allies to both the north and south, with water on the east and the unpredictable Cao Cao on the west. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Although I may be a little excited due to playing a whole new romance game, I think 10 is truly one of the best they've put out so far and my advice would be to get that one. If you're not sure though, give them each a rental and see how you like them(especially if you've never played a romance game before).

You also might try one of the KOEI games from underdogs as well, they are pretty old, but pretty fun. Some of them are set in anceint chine, such as Bandit Kings of Ancient China , Genghis Khan and Henghis Khan 2...

Romance of the 3 kingdoms sounds interesting. I'll take a closer look.

After trying both for a few minutes, 6 looks a lot easier to understand.

What I've read about 10 is that the focus is more on an individual character rather than the wide sweep of the entire fight, which is where the prior ones lose me. But I gotta admit, whenever I try a RoTK title I come away thinking I'm missing something, because it just never seems to click with me.
