I wound up canceling a few months back. I got tired of them changing the rules of the game every other week. I'd rather just pay for the damn movie than to put up with all that nonsense.

Us too. My wife and I dropped MoviePass back in January and have been A-List members for the past 3 months. We love being able to reserve tickets several days in advance and see 3-D movies for the same "price". So far we have seen 8 movies, but I expect that number to pick up as the Spring/Summer blockbusters start appearing.

No membership for the wife, but seeing as I can easily purchase her ticket while reserving mine is nice. Which means she's on the hook for refreshments. And I can go see films on Saturdays that I know she has no interest in for "free".

Always struck me as weird people would see movies without their significant other. Im forced into that for the next Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy but other than that I haven't been to a movie without my wife since we met in 1987. Its going to be strange and horrible at the same time and very sad when I do go.

I do not want to drag my wife to see a movie she will absolutely hate. Sadly, that's about 90% of the movies I want to see at the theater. It's either go alone, not go, or pay double just so she can not enjoy herself. Plus I'd have to reciprocate and see Faithfully Yours or whatever the next romantic comedy is called.

I see about 20 movies the year. About 18 of those I see alone and I much prefer it that way. No need to worry if someone else is enjoying themselves. It's the best.

I am more likely to see a movie with my kids than with my wife... but there's a whole different thread for that. I am fine with seeing movies alone, but now that the kids are older, they come along for a lot of them as long as they aren't too crazy scary (the movies, not the kids).

My wife and I also have different tastes in movies. Sometimes we have gone out to see different movies with similar start and end times and end our "date" going out to dinner together. However, tonight we're going to see Captain Marvel together.

Every once in awhile my wife and I will see a movie at an iPic near us. In this case we can compromise on the movie because the experience is the draw. Leather recliners with blankets and some damn good food and drinks.

They do now. And even better, there's a three-tiered segregation selection of theaters for various price points. And surcharges for the cool audio and video add-on theaters and premium seating!

Yeah, their pricing is awful. Luckily, the theatre by us is at their cheapest price point of $18 per month. Even with the .50 cent "convenience" fee, it looks like we would come out slightly ahead if we see two movies a month (assuming $10/ticket average). Ironically, we flagged 24 movies that we wanted to see this year.

We recently signed up for the Alamo Drafthouse Season Pass with the +1 option.

While the movies aren't "free" (there's a $2 charge per use) it effectively allows us to see first run as well as older movies that the Alamo is noted for.

In the last two months we have seen:

The Road Warrior
Eyes Wide Shut (WTF even was that movie?)
Monster Squad
The Gate (cheesy 80's horror starting a very young Stephen Dorff)
Shaun of the Dead
The Goonies
The Shining
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (The original)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Hocus Pocus
Dragonslayer

and probably a few more that I can't remember

We also have tickets for upcoming movies like:

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

The only let down is we can't use it for things like Movie Parties, Quote Alongs, and other special engagements like the Metallica concert and such.

All of these movies count towards our rewards points so we constantly get free coupons for drinks, popcorn, etc

Well worth the $38/month as far as I'm concerned.

MoviePass is still a thing, btw, they are limping along as a convoluted "credit-based" program. However, I think they did a great thing by pushing theater chains into establishing their own subscription models (opened the door, so to speak).

The former chief executive of MoviePass’ parent company has pleaded guilty to charges of security fraud and conspiracy and could face up to 25 years in prison.

Theodore Farnsworth “engaged in schemes to defraud investors,” the US Department of Justice said in a statement Tuesday, while he was in charge of Helios and Matheson Analytics, the former parent company of MoviePass. Between 2017 and 2019, he made “materially false and misleading representations” of the once-popular movie-ticket subscription service in an attempt to attract new investors. His alleged actions also artificially inflated the company’s stock price, the Justice Department said.

Farnsworth and J. Mitchell Lowe, the former CEO of MoviePass, once told investors that MoviePass’ business model of letting customers see unlimited movies in theaters for $9.95 per month was a sustainable business model. However, the pair knew that was false and used the pitch to inflate the parent company’s stock price, the DOJ said.
