Realized I didn't respond to the 'keeping charge overnight.' The car won't use much in the cold in general while just sitting, though it can charge more slowly if it's really cold. It's really hot weather that will cause the car to cool the pack temp down. Cold weather generally doesn't require the car to do anything other than reduce regen braking, and reduce power a bit if it's really cold.

With that said, I don't know if that holds at -40F. Hasn't gotten that cold here in... awhile.

A former Tesla employee has filed a whistleblower tip with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the law firm representing the employee said in a statement on Monday.

The tip from Sean Gouthro, the former head of Tesla's global security operations center and investigations, was filed on January 24 and corroborates a tip made in August from Karl Hansen, a former internal security employee at Tesla, Meissner Associates said in a statement on Monday.

Hansen's tip alleged that Tesla did not disclose to shareholders the theft of raw materials and the unauthorized surveillance and hacking of employee cellphones and computers, according to Meissner Associates, as well as that Tesla did not tell federal authorities about information it received from Hansen about alleged drug trafficking at the company's Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk described Hansen in a Twitter direct message to Gizmodo at the time with the peanuts emoji.

Gouthro is the third former Tesla employee represented by Meissner Associates to announce the filing of a whistleblowing tip with the SEC in the past year. In July, Martin Tripp, a former technician at the Gigafactory, filed a tip that contained claims he had previously made to Business Insider, including that Tesla used batteries with puncture holes in vehicles meant for customers, according to The Washington Post. Tesla has denied this claim.

Tripp also claimed the company overreported Model 3 production by up to 44%, according to The Post.

Ha. Still alive, but tired as I stayed up to watch. I think I want one, but I want to see some more impressions of the third row. I know it's gonna be pretty small, but want to see whether 8-12 year old girls can fit comfortably. If it'll work with my kids back there, I'm sold. Time will tell.

I am impressed with the range specs. I expected the base to be closer to 200 miles rather than 230.

My thoughts (worth what you paid for them):
-They are taking orders, not reservations this time. Fully refundable, but $2.5k vs the 3's $1k, and you select your actual config (also changeable). This should make sure people are pretty interested if they're willing to drop $2.5k, and will also give Tesla a solid idea of various options' popularity.
-Taking orders early for the same reason they always do--people make car-buying decisions on a years-long timeline. Knowing this is coming, what it is/costs/has, and approximately when it's coming will halt some folks from buying something else in favor of this.
-I think the timeline odds are much higher than with any prior Tesla vehicle. This is basically a raised and lengthened 3. The majority of its parts, including the difficult ones of the cells/pack/motors/screen/dash, are all 100% complete and ramped up to thousands/week already. This has never been the case with any prior Tesla vehicle. It's always been a new pack and dash design, and in the 3 it was also new cells, motors, screen, and software interface.

Also, this basically kills the Jaguar i-Pace and Audi e-Tron. Both are about the size of the Y, with inferior range, much higher cost, and terrible efficiency. And much worse charging network. They'll still sell some to their brand loyalists, but the Y is the clear leader once it's available.

I was going to bed at 9:56pm and told my wife I wanted to watch but I wanted to sleep more... then I woke up at 2:30am and couldn't get back to sleep. I can't win. The only reason for me to watch is that people expect me to know stuff about Teslas now for some reason. I have no interest in the Y. The X was too small for our second vehicle purposes (dog crates don't fit under the hatch) so the Y isn't going to do anything to solve that.

It's funny but it's true. Both Audi and Jaguar's offerings are not competitive at all on price/functionality. The S and X can still be crazy expensive, but the 3 and soon the Y are starting to put pressure on the lower-end offerings of competitors.

After my state and federal rebates, my Model 3 (upgraded with extended range) was $40k. Pretty much the going rate for any decent vehicle.

A little bit. From the accounts I've read, it sounds like the 3rd row and hatch area are still under development and were mostly off-limits last night. The 7-seat option in the configurator also lists 2021, so it seems the initial deliveries will be the 5-seat interior.

It's funny but it's true. Both Audi and Jaguar's offerings are not competitive at all on price/functionality. The S and X can still be crazy expensive, but the 3 and soon the Y are starting to put pressure on the lower-end offerings of competitors.

No one buys Audis or Jags for competitive pricing. They are buying perceived status/aspiration. Ever see the used market for Jags? Now there is some depreciation.

Kind of true. To this point, if you wanted an electric SUV, you got a Model X starting at $90k+. The i-Pace and e-Tron were a bit of a drop to that entry price. And Hyundai's Kona, but that's looking like a compliance car only sold in certain areas. So at this point you have people looking at those cars not for the brand but for the functionality.

I'm in the same boat. If the reservations were $1k like the 3 was, I was prepared to plop one down, but at $2500 I think I'm going to wait until we get more details. I definitely want to nuke our PHEV in the 2021 timeframe and get off gas completely, and I'm 90% sure it'll be in a Tesla, but I don't want to go too far out on the limb until I am sure the size works for us. By 2021 used Xs won't be too crazy-expensive, either.

7 seats in there seems odd to me, I'd imagine the X would make much more sense getting in and out.

I hate to say this but my honest first impression when I saw the reveal was "omg they turned my precious Model 3 into a Prius". Whyyyy????

Now in all fairness I actually loved my Prius, which I had for like 8 years, and it was also the same shade of blue. I suspect after I get a better look at it I will appreciate it more, it was hard to see during the reveal.

Depends how much you need--a full charge would be pretty atypical. We're in a long-range 3, and generally rolled in with 10-20% remaining and needed 60-80% to continue. Up to around 50% it charges around the 400+ mph rate you see in my photo. After that, it tapers down. This is a long way of saying we averaged about 30 min, with some being 10 min and others (generally when we stopped for a meal) 45-60 min.

Bottom line is over the first 1500 miles of this trip, we've spent about 10-15 min waiting for charging to finish when we didn't have other stuff to do, eg bathroom breaks, snack acquisition, meals.
