Desperate for a new game. Serious funk.

Post by Mudfrost »

No game grabs me these days. I just finished off a 4-month excursion into WOW, loved every minute of it, but finally tired of the experience. Maybe the magic will return but for now I've had enough and I find myself in a gaming funk.

WOW aside, I prefer turn-based wargames. I'm considering Battles in Italy or maybe the earlier Battles in Normandy. I want something deep but I'm a bit too scattered right now to get into anything like HOI 2 (I own it).

Ideally, I'd like a solid WWII or Civil War turn-based game that'll blow me away. X-Box or PS2 are ok but I prefer PC right now. The old TalonSoft Civil War games are some of my favorites, so how about Campaign Gettysburg? I'm leaning toward that one.

Help a fellow gamer get out of his funk. And thanks.

Good call. It's probably a stupid question, but have you played the Combat Missions?

Depending on your system and video card, BF2 may very well feel like a turn-based wargame :)

Try Combat Mission. Its interface is a bit wonky at first, but the orders you give out are pretty simple, it's how they play out that's the real depth of the game.

Massive Assault or its semi sequel, Dominion is a flashy 3D hexmap turn based game. It's more a quick build and blow things up TB strategy game, but it's nice on its own.

Silent Storm is a great detailed 3D infantry TB game, you'll have a small squad worth of agents. It's set in WW2 with some scifi elements in. Unfortunately, everyone says that 3/4ths into the game you encounter the Panzerkliens, basically power armor that completely change the game's balance and make the scifi elements overbearing.

What about World At War? That's Grigsby's TB WW2 game. Deep, but not complex like HOI2.

If you're not hung up on it being WW II or ACW, you might want to give Crown of Glory a shot. It just came out yesterday, but seems pretty deep and satisfyng so far. You can find early impressions here.

If you have no games to play in your queue, then my advice would be to read a book or grab some DVDs.

Don't waste your money forcing yourself to play.

If you haven't tried MMG's Civil War: Bull Run, you should really give it a try. It's sort of like the love child of Sid Meier's Gettysburg and Combat Mission. Don't be put off by the History Channel distribution; despite the bargain price it's really a high-quality title.
