Oh hey, thanks James Gunn for giving me the Superman movie I never knew I wanted.
Brightburn isn't anything new, as DC has done more than one variant on the "What if Superman wasn't such a nice guy" formula, but I trust Gunn to make something unique and fun out of it. By turning it into pure horror, I think he's on the right track.
Well, that was a waste of 90 minutes. Saw it this afternoon and it goes from promising to cliched slasher film fairly quickly. They try to create a mashup of an origin story for a bloodthirsty killer and a comic book Superman rip-off. But they just ended up making a mediocre horror film that isn’t really that scary. They do pile on the gore though...which just makes the whole thing feel even more confused about what it wants to say. Turns out it was only produced by James Gunn.
At best this is a streaming service watch...as long as you don’t have to pay for it.
Just saw it and thought it was pretty good. Original story without the cliched ending most would have expected.
Left me wondering about and hoping for a sequel.
It had such potential but they dropped the ball by ignoring an interesting premise in favor of going all out gore horror. I did like the nod at the end to an anti-DC universe that could become a cool franchise if they follow up on it. But I doubt they will as the reviews (and box office) haven’t been kind enough to merit a sequel.
The kid actor was fantastic though. He really sold it.
Edit: just read that it only cost 6 mil to make and it made about 7.5 mil domestically, and about 16 mil international. If it breaks 30 mil they’ll be flush, so maybe they’ll make a sequel in order to keep James Gunn happy. Who knows.
As far as not being that scary, I'm sure the moron that brought his 5-6 year old daughter has a different opinion.
I mean...I get it...I was a divorced Dad when my daughter was growing up and spending time with her was important.
But Jesus, dude...…..either find a sitter or maybe.....I don't know......take her to Pikachu that's playing 1 screen over....

Saw this tonight and it's interesting to say the least. At most, it's a fun sweet movie with Beatles music. My theory:

The movie never ends up revealing what exactly is going on, but he does have an accident and my theory is that everything that happens after that accident is happening while he's in a coma.
1. The whole thing with him and the Beatles is likely his form of therapy. Having been a frustrated musician, his brain goes into overdrive giving him a fantasy where he's come up with all the music that he's loved. The more songs he supposedly comes up with, the closer he is to coming out of that coma.
2. The Beatles aren't the only thing that apparently don't exist in this world of his, such as Coke, Oasis, and a number of other things he happens to like. I see that as a representation of corrupted memory or blocks of memory affected via the accident.
3. There are a number of times he keeps getting interrupted by phones ringing when he's trying to explain things. I think maybe this represents other people visiting him at the hospital trying to talk him to try getting a response out of him.
4. There's a moment in the movie where he's told he'll be on Late Night with James Corben, and then Thursday Night Live. Thursday. This actually lends more to an alt universe theory.
5. There are two people that apparently know about the Beatles other than him that talk to him later in the movie. This I think represents his consciousness.
6. Oh, this is a big one. John Lennon. He meets one of his idols in the countryside, a John Lennon who's 76. This seems to pretty much be his brain's way of telling him to wake up. Big concert at the end is his wakeup call.
7. He ends up getting married with the girl. I think this is the only thing that's really happened since his accident.
I haven't seen any later discussion of this movie, so this seems like the place to say it's hilarious.

I bought this on vudu streaming during a 4th of July sale (it was actually the same price as renting it) and watched it on Saturday. It was hysterical. Dark, yes. But funny as hell. The entire cast is fantastic, but I think I laughed most at Jason Isaacs and Jeffrey Tambor.

That whole batch looks promising. All or most of them will land on my netflix list. Well, except the spoilered one, because yuck. Didn't even watch that trailer.
Takashi Miike's 90th film (in 30 years...the man's a goddamn machine):
I'm an unabashed Miike fanboy. He's one of the very few directors that can completely surprise me every damn time. He'll make one of the most disturbing horror films ever made one minute (Audition), a traditional Samurai action film the next (13 Assassins), and then a friggin' sweet children's film (Ninja Kids...which I have no desire to see). I'm hoping I can see First Love in a theater this time. I've never had the experience of catching a Miike film on the big screen before. He may miss almost as often as he hits, but he's still one of the most daring and uninhibited film makers alive today.
The premise that WW1 British commanders took the destruction of a mere Battalion seriously is ridiculous. Get back to me when we're losing a whole Corps in one push.

Too bad Ad Astra is getting lukewarm reviews and disappointing box office. I like realistic, near-future space movies. Will eventually see this one, but not in the theater.

The critics seem to really like it. But the audience reviews seem mediocre. Of course, audience reviews are usually not that trustworthy when they vary that much from the critics, in my opinion. I mean, audience reviews seem to indicate they love the Fast and Furious films most of the time.
I’ll probably see it. I enjoy thoughtful science fiction as much as I do the big epic ones.
