Close but no cigar. I thought I had my insomnia licked but I dont....yet. Friday I went to bed and slept all night. I got up at 9am Sat. All good. But Ive been in bed trying to sleep for hours again tonight and Im wide awake at nearly 5am. Looks like 3rd go at staying up all day and sleeping tomorrow. I could take Benedryl or TylenolPM but I dont want to depend on sleep aids. Once you do its hell to sleep without them. Sorta like now anyways. Maybe for a few nights. Weeeee

EDIT....30 min after I posted I got to sleep. My alarm just woke me at 8am so go 3 hours sleep there bouts. Maybe I can sleep earlier tonight.

EDIT....Took a 2 hour nap. bet that messes me up tonight. Hope not.

Human eyes don't do so well at operating independently. When your eye is injured such that a regular nightlight seems so bright that it feels like you're staring into a flashlight, your brain closes both of your eyes, regardless of how much you try to convince it that only one is necessary. When your eye is injured and your system starts pouring tears out of one of them to clean and heal it (so intensely that tears start draining out of your nose), both eyes end up wet.

And when it is an injury to the surface of your eye and you close it and try to use the other, both eyes move together, even the closed one. That rubs the injury against the inside of the eyelid which redoubles the pain, closes both eyes, and pours more water down your face.

So, yeah. For quite a while, I effectively had no eyes.

Well its the end of summer. Today is the last day. Fall begins sometime after midnight tonight. I can feel the seasonal depression and sadness glancing my way at that news. Although I wont be able to tell a difference in the weather between summer and fall for a while it seems. Normal day temps are 80 average but its been in the 90s forever. Tomorrow it will be 90 for the first day of fall and by mid week it will hit 96. We're also inside a drought. I hate droughts. I hate winter. I hate.

Here, too. I used to be able to count on turning off the AC and using the windows for most of September until late October. Now it'll be close to 90 at least early in October. If it follows the pattern of the last few years, it'll be summer highs until it turns wintery cold, with about a week of fall weather in between.

The benefit of having a palsy in one of my eye muscles? I have no empathy for how others see. I have no depth perception and my eyes seem to work independently of each other, even if the only way my brain knows how to cope with it is to only see out of one eye or the other. It gets quite distracted and confused when it tries to focus using both eyes at the same time and double vision goes wild.

Also was annoyed that on this last week of September it was very hot, very muggy, and very rainy... Or at least I would have been annoyed at the weather if I weren't annoyed that I was working all weekend.

After my 30 mile ride this weekend, the inside of my ring finder and little finger on my left hand (the area facing each other) was numb, felt like it was asleep and almost in the pins and needles phase. This has happened before and cleared up in an hour or two. This time, though, I'm 20 hours in and still feeling the numbness. Same on my right hand, pinky finger. It's odd. I'm not sure what to do with it. Everything works fine. No pain or motor degredation. Just a feeling like they're asleep.

Ulnar nerve entrapment?
Numbness and tingling in the ring finger and little finger are common symptoms of ulnar nerve entrapment. Often, these symptoms come and go. They happen more often when the elbow is bent, such as when driving or holding the phone. Some people wake up at night because their fingers are numb.

Consider a sports med or hand ortho specialist. Obviously a professional diagnosis is required.

About 15 - 20 years ago it seems my father n law sold a small strip of the yard on one side to that neighbor on that side. Its just a small strip maybe 25' wide. It was edged with a wire fence and trees. The neighbor left it alone though and we continued to use it. Our clothes line was there along with a rose bush that was my father n laws mother's offshoot, and a apple tree. Well when my FiL passed away the neighbor moved right in on it. He mowed down the rose bush before I could even get a piece of it to replant elsewhere. He cut the apple tree down and then pulled up the half of the clothes line pole on his side. This year he cut all those trees down so now its one big open space on that side of my home. Lovely. He parks his carry trailer there .

Anyways we had a wild grape or muscadine vine that was on that property. Its gone but I have a bush on my side that has it growing in it now. Seems birds use the bush and poop out seeds. Theres all kinds of overgrowth I need to clean out of that bush but Id like to keep the vine...just somewhere else. Is there anything to know about doing this?

Like...do I just dig it up and move it? Do I wait on grapes to grow next year then save those seeds? Will a cutting work? Just how and when I do this will be important I know. I have a lot of cutting to do to keep my trees and bushes alive. Theres Kudzu moving into the place and its got to go.

What do I want for dinner?

a. Try a Jamaican place I've not been to before for Jerk Chicken, peas and rice and stewed cabbage?
b. Go to my usual Mexican restaurant for huevos con chorizo?
c. Go to the Pakistani restaurant for either chili chicken or butter chicken...even if there's still rampant construction going on and it takes me 20 minutes to find a goddamn parking spot.

Thoughts?

I'm always in favor of Mexican, but that sounds more breakfast-lunch-y. The Jamaican place sounds like it could be a winner. So my vote is 'a'.

Oh... and 20 minutes to find a parking spot? Screw that. It'll probably still be there when the construction is finally finished.

I can eat huevos con chorizo for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

But yeah, I'm leaning towards the Jamaican place. The best jerk chicken in Chicago is practically right across the street from me, but the recent move into this huge place they're in now was accompanied by a massive jump in their prices, and an even larger drop in their service (which wasn't that great before they moved down the street closer to me). So finding an alternative for my jerk chicken fix would be a huge plus.

The smaller place that's only a few buildings down from the best jerk chicken in Chicago proved to be mediocre at best. Too much spice, not enough chicken. This other place is a couple of miles from my apartment.

Only time we ever had jerk chicken was when a place went into the food court at the mall. This was about 1999 or 2000 and it was only in there about 2 years. But wow was it good. Missed it when it was gone.

Question...is all pressure treated wood like a 2x4 green in tint? I bought a 2x4 last year and Im ready to fix what I wanted to but Im going to need another one and I cant recall which I got. Looking at it it has no color to it at all and I see now special markings on it other than the normal printing. Im guessing I bought untreated as Ill be painting in before installing it. But Im not sure and would like to buy the same type.

Im tired. Still have insomnia and didn't sleep a wink last night. Then when I gave up at daylight I had to wash up fast as I could because we are in a drought and have well water. Then off to the landrymat and swung by the lumber yard for an extra 2x4. Last year in Nov me and my wife got a 2x4 and a sheet of plywood so I could rebuild the well pump door under the front porch area. I didn't get to it so am now. But I dont have a pickup and the only way to get that 2x4 home last year was to have it sawed in half. That left me with just enough board for 2 sides. The other 2 pieces were the wrong size. So a new one today and I had him cut it to order to fit in the car. You think a 2x4 at $3.50 is cheap until you consider just how many it takes to build a home.

So spent today measuring, sawing and painting painting painting. The other frame and door rotted because of lack of paint after 8 years or so. This time Ive painted since noon. Paint and wait to dry, paint and wait to dry. Only 2 coats but I have to wait then flip the boards over to do again. Waiting now on the last layer to dry before nailing them together. Ill get the plywood door cut and painted and installed tomorrow. The frame has taken me all day..plus no sleep. Also got the bathroom cleaned today while I can have the window open to vent bleach vapor.

Hope I sleep tonight. I have to be up early and leave again tomorrow for dog food, then a free bag of food from a local help place..Im out of everything but a few frozen dinners and 2 packs of cola until the 3rd..but thats money spent. SNAP refills 11th. Whopping $60. Also need to do something else but Im forgetting what. Hope I remember it. The 3rd is another run around day. And another month is gone and the energy voucher is not in the utility's billing so will have another power bill. Was hoping to have that money for food and stuff. Ohhh well. At least its all worked out.

Im just so tired. If I take no sleep aid then I sleep zero - 2 hours. If I take a sleep aid I sleep 12-14 hours and cant wake up enough to get up. When D was alive it was not a big deal..we slept or didn't and we helped watch each other for troubles or mistakes. Now no sleep and driving worries me. Or we'd get each other up after a normal sleep. Times change.

Renowned French chef Marc Veyrat on Tuesday announced he had sued the France-based Michelin Guide after the restaurant guidebook authority demoted his La Maison des Bois in Manigod, France, from three stars to two earlier this year. Veyrat claimed Michelin’s reviewer wrongly determined a cheese souffle as having cheddar in it; Veyrat said the color was from saffron used in the dish and is now seeking documentation from Michelin to explain its decision.

“They dared to say that we put cheddar in our souffle of reblochon, beaufort, and tomme,” Veyrat told French magazine Le Point in July. “They have insulted our region; my employees were furious."

A court hearing is set for Nov. 27 in Nanterre, Agence France-Presse reports.
...
Veyrat’s restaurant, roughly 100 miles east of Lyon, was first awarded the coveted three-star Michelin ranking in 2018. Much of the food in the $330-to-$430 tasting menu comes from the restaurant’s own botanic gardens and orchards.

The original founder of the company I work for passed away two nights ago in his sleep. Word is he went to bed feeling fine and never woke up. His wife found him the next morning. He was 62 and sold his business 2 years ago for a couple million dollars and was planning to enjoy his retirement. He had his camp compound out in the woods up north, loved hunting and nature, and lived for his family. Not working wasn't going to break his heart.

Seems far too young to shuffle off the mortal coil, but at least there was no suffering or fear. When I knew him, I thought he was a good guy and a respectable business owner.

Keeping up with a checkbook is all new to me. Last time I had one was about 1994 and Id mess it up by a few bucks each month and then Id get a $20 fee charged to me all the time because id forgot to write a checkcard purchase down.

Anyways for the first 4 or 5 months this time I did great. But over the last few months my running count and the banks have become different and I cannot find the error. Looking at all my registers Ive checked everything off so there should be nothing out there like a check thats not been cashed. I started out double checking my calculator use by doing it all on paper too but after those first few months I was seeing no differences in the numbers so quit figuring it in my head and just used the calculator.

But now Im off about $20. Since I cant find the error Id prefer not to use more than my checkbook says I have no matter what my banks says. But I need to use the bank's figures because I have to get food. I hope marking it in my checkbook and going by the banks numbers is safe. Wish I could find the error or difference. Earlier in the year I donated $10 2 times to different OOr causes. Thats the only difference I can figure. But I cant find if those 2 donations were taken or not. If not that would account for the $20. And if they are the reason of differences in bank numbers then I dont know IF they WILL be taken out down the line.

Did you do it backwards? Get a copy of all of your checking statements. Sit down with your checkbook, and go over every item. Make sure that the item is listed on the statement, that the numbers match, and put a check by it on the statement. If anything isn't listed, or if any numbers are off, or if there is anything on the statement without a check, you've found your problem.

If everything is right, do it a second time the other way around. Go down the statements, and make sure that each item is listed in your checkbook with the correct numbers. Again, put a check mark if it is. Anything left over should be the issue.

If not, it is likely math.

And in the future, look into either software or a spreadsheet that can do the calculations for you. I have one that I use, but others probably have far better recommendations.

I am happy to learn that I'm not the last man in America who sits down with a calculator and a pen and balances his checking register every month. Although I will confess: I don't have to account for every dime. If I'm off by a wee bit, I take the bank's word for it. They virtually always turn out to be right in the end anyway. When I do find a substantial difference, it's always because I forgot to record something or flubbed the arithmetic.

Whichever Hollywood exec decided that Cara Delevingne needs to be a thing just needs to stop.

She’s a terrible actress, she has the personality and charisma of a piece of plywood, and she’s not particularly attractive. I’ve seen her in three things now (Suicide Squad, Valérian whatever, and Carnival Row) and she’s been bad to the point of distraction in all three.

Something Ive always wondered when seeing 'Original Coca Cola' or 'Original flavor' on my Coke cans. Did they 'really' go back to the old one?

Wouldn't it be funny that back in 1985 Coca Cola wanted to change their formula. Not a lot but just a little to save some money. But they knew even a small change would be noticed by some and hated by some. Not all but some. And that would cause problems and actually lose them money rather than save money in what went into Coke then. So they come up with a brilliant idea....they'll not only change it but they'll radically change the flavor so that everyone can tell the difference and most likely hate it. So they do that and when everyone fussed they went back to 'old Coke'...but instead of the original old flavor and ingredients they went with their new one that saves them money....and nobody notices because the crappy fake new one was out long enough to help people forget the spot on original taste and they put that silly 'Original' right there on the can to reinforce their lie.

So in the end they win by saving money and we win because we think we won lol. Brilliant. The only way they could have lost is if people loved the major change New Coke if it cost them more to make.

I thought it was well known that the whole "New Coke" debacle was just a scheme to start using HFCS?

World's oldest working barber dies at 108.
When Anthony Mancinelli became a barber nearly a century ago, Warren Harding was in the White House, a haircut cost 25 cents and leeches were still used to treat high blood pressure.

As hairstyles changed over the decades, he adapted.

“I cut them all,’’ he told The New York Times last year, “long hair, short hair, whatever was in style — the shag, the Buster Brown, straight bangs, permanents.”

“I have some customers, I cut their father, grandfather and great-grandfather — four generations,” he added.

Apparently I missed an amazing community meeting in my neighborhood last night.
A neighborhood meeting in Park Slope descended into a belligerent free-for-all on Wednesday night, after the event’s invited speaker spewed conspiracy theories about a pedophile-linked bike lobby, then shoved a well-known cycling advocate.
***
Over loud objections, Halpern presented an exclusive look at his unfinished film, “Betrayal on 14th Street,” a fawning portrayal of the Manhattan residents who have successfully stymied a busway planned for the corridor, and are seeking to rip out two adjacent bike lanes.

Roughly half the attendees jeered at the film, decrying it as propaganda. A man in an FDNY shirt, who declined to give his name, threatened cyclist Brian Fulton-Howard: “I’ll beat your ass.”
***
The two-hour event wrapped up with a lengthy monologue from Perfetto, who dispensed with his attempts at impartial moderation to claim that bike activists had “authorized” and successfully covered-up his friend’s death many years ago.
Bike lanes are remarkably divisive.

Ok. I have 2 registers worth of records and last night I went through the first one before my eyes gave out. I found one error there in it. Just now I went through my latest one and actually found 2 errors in it. All three errors were simple math ones. Strange thing is I use a calculator . But just looking at the register entries I can see instantly they are wrong without even checking with the calc first. Not sure how I missed one never mind 3. They turn out to equal the difference in the final balance.

Im VERY lucky that the error was to me. My bank book was lower than my bank itself and it turned out I was wrong. It could have just as easily been against me which would be very bad. From now on Im going slower and checking more closely. I usually do all this as soon as I get home each trip. I save all the receipts and sit right down and do them up. My wife used to just keep them and only balance the checkbook once a month. I think Ill still do it more but maybe once a week and when Im good an awake and not tired or in a hurry.

I can buy some food woohoo!

Grats!

I remember that one time I entered a small debit as a credit, or visa versa. But it took me ages to figure it out since all the numbers were there. Just that one in the wrong column to really screw things up.

A recommended long read for the weekend: Stories About My Brother. It's a reporter's reflection on her younger brother -- how close they were as kids, how they grew apart, and the toxic elements of modern society that contributed to his death. It's really sad.

it's hilariously depressing how this keeps happening - company keeps buying the saaaame fruit platters for events. always the blueberries are picked out first, then the strawberries, then the watermelon (if it's in season) and pineapple, then eventually the grapes, leaving the fillermelon (honeydew and cantaloupe) for the trash... and of course fillermelon constitutes at least 2/3s of the whole package. such a waste.
