my son is visiting and reaaaaally wants to go to the Living Computer Museum in South Seattle. i was like, hmm, playing on a bunch of old computer keyboards that other people have been using, not too good of an idea. he then got mad saying i was 'overreacting' and giving in to the 'hysteria'. oh, and for 'ruining our vacation' of course

i checked just now and they're 'closed until further notice'.

bugged out to the coast for a few days. i should probably go back there, haha.
Smoove_B wrote: Mon Mar 09, 2020 10:49 am That being said, I fully expect community-level facilities to start closing down - anywhere larger groups of people can gather or interact. I'm actually kinda surprised it hasn't happened yet in Seattle, but that could be because they don't have the data (official numbers) to justify it.

there goes my concert calendar for the next month-ish

USA Today
In most cases during a global viral outbreak, a mass gathering of people who have turned blue might cause alarm.

Not in the French town of Landerneau, where 3,500 people donned Smurf costumes, blue body paint, white hats and all, for a record-breaking rally, according to Agence France-Presse.

Mayor Patrick Leclerc defended holding the rally amid global concerns of the outbreak of the new coronavirus. Around the globe, large gatherings of people, including sporting events, conferences, concerts, even Coachella, have been canceled.

The Smurf rally went on.

"We must not stop living ... it was the chance to say that we are alive," Leclerc told the AFP.

Washington, DC's health department has just recommended cancelling or postponing all non-essential mass gatherings until the end of the month.

Chicago has cancelled St. Patrick's Day parades. The article I read didn't comment on whether the Chicago River would be dyed (more) green.

I heard “Not cancelled, delayed”. (-and yes, also the river)

Not sure what value a delay has (above political) though...

Not like people are going to re-do this in a couple months?

I didn't mean to kill the joke, just pointing out that if one DID believe it was a hoax put on by Democrats, the fact that the DC health department put out that note wouldn't be disqualifying.

Welp, my state (New Mexico) just joined the party. Three confirmed cases: "a married couple in their 60s from Socorro County who had recently traveled to Egypt and a woman in her 70s from Bernalillo County who had recently traveled to New York City."

Socorro is pretty rural and remote, but Bernalillo County is where Albuquerque is and is the state's most populous county.

(Also, I'm not sure I understand the difference between our two forum threads about this.)

We are in full scramble mode to get everything set up to allow EVERYONE to work from home. They're even talking about pushing down a VPN client to all of our desktop machines and allowing users to take them home with them. Crazy times.

I'm not sure what they'll do if we go to work at home. All the lawyers already have laptops and are capable of working from home, but much of the support staff (assistants and paralegals, largely) have desktops. I'm hoping if it gets to that point the company will just let them stay at home with pay.

I've avoided it because I don't want to have to work from home. Most of my take-home can be done on the printed page or the cloud (no PHI). Now they're basically forcing a laptop on me in preparation. Maybe my office can be turned into an isolation room.

He phrased it more romantically than I would have, he's French, but it amounts to the same thing more or less. How does anyone know that all those Smurfs weren't already exposed to the virus? Canceling SmurfFest 2020 might not have accomplished anything other than ruining everyone's good time.

I'm working from home today but it's not plague-related. I'm conducting annual reviews for my remote employees today and the video conferencing for that is best done secluded at home and not among the office chaos.
