I'm increasingly pessimistic that we will even have an election in November. I know the GOP can't just hand-wave that away, but they are very good at sidestepping laws and they control more judges every day. If there's a national shelter-in-place order with National Guard troops on the streets, what are us disloyal types going to do about it? This crisis is a dictator's fantasy.
One hopes that virus transmission will slow down enough by then to make the shelter-in-place transparently unnecessary.

Coronavirus kills 3 family members and sickens 4 others after a dinner in New Jersey
A New Jersey mother died from coronavirus without knowing that her two children also got infected and died shortly before she did, The New York Times reported.
Grace Fusco, 73, died Wednesday and was unaware of the deaths of her oldest son and daughter from Covid-19, the disease caused by coronavirus.
A relative told the newspaper that four other children also have coronavirus and remain hospitalized -- three in critical condition. CNN has reached out to a family representative but has not heard back.

This is something that likely needs more traction, but I'll share it here and summary (broadly) the implications. It's kinda scicene-y, but I think an honest accounting.
https://twitter.com/trvrb/status/1240444821593944064
Instead, he's suggesting in part (and rightfully so) that we need to start thinking about how to identify people that had the disease and are now immune. Individuals that are no longer at risk and can return to normal life function. To do this would require an insane amount of testing, ideally done at home. But once it's been determined that you've already had it and are fully recovered, there's no reason so continue to distance yourself.
Of course all that comes after more aggressive testing and contact tracing to continue to suppress spread. This really is the cornerstone to everything - until we can get a handle on early identification and figure out exactly where this virus is (at a community level) social distancing is our only realistic option.
I guess the point with all this - and why I've been white-knuckled for the last few weeks is because without the ability to offer protection (aka a vaccine) we're doing the next best thing to prevent spread (social distancing). Realistically this cannot continue until a vaccine arrives (~18 months from now) so we need to start figuring out ways to make sure we're not going to have another outbreak (and wave of chaos) in early May when everything thinks its super terrific fun time to come outside and go back to normal.
https://twitter.com/trvrb/status/1240444821593944064
Basically, the social distancing is a "fire stop" activity to try and limit our medical systems from being overwhelmed. If it works - meaning if we can get people to do this - and we can accomplish flattening, that doesn't actually address the issue of how to deal with the virus. More to the point, if the curve is flattened, the very worst thing then would be for everyone to rush out and start doing everything they were doing prior to aggressive social distancing. We're not all suddenly immune and able to return to normal. If we tried that, there would be a second (or third) wave of infections and the whole thing would start over again (chaos, deaths, etc...)I've been mulling over the @MRC_Outbreak modeling report on #COVID19 mitigation and suppression strategies since it was posted on March 16. Although mitigation through social distancing may not solve things I believe we can bring this epidemic under control. 1/19

By way of example, the NJ ABC relaxed their regulations and my local craft brewer started delivering his beer to customers as of yesterday. Every little bit helps, particularly when I've turned to day-drinking while thinking about Trump.

Mobilizing our 3D Printing team and HP’s Digital Manufacturing Partner Network to design, validate and produce essential parts for medical responders and hospitals. This includes parts such as ventilator valves, breathing filters and face mask clasps, as well as entirely new parts such as plastic door handle adaptors which enable easy elbow opening to prevent further spread of the virus. We will make available any HP proprietary design files for these parts so they can be produced anywhere in the world and are also helping end-customers bridge potential supply chain interruptions by expanding distributed print-on-demand capabilities.

NEW: After assuring the public about the government's coronavirus preparedness, Senate Intel chair Richard Burr, in one day, sold off up to $1.6 million is stock.
A week later, the market began its fall.
His committee was receiving daily briefings.

Does anyone still go to Gametop? I think the last time I was in one was 5-10 years ago (and I didn't find anything to buy then, either)
I don't anymore.

Do you think we can orchestrate an angry pitchfork wielding mob where all the members of the mob are at least six feet apart from each other?

Sooo GS Corporate thinks that if law enforcement is at a store to shut it down due to a closure order that said officer is going to even consider calling them so that they can tell the officer over the phone that he is mistaken and they are allowed to stay open?“We have received reports of local authorities visiting stores in an attempt to enforce closure despite our classification. Store Managers are approved to provide the document linked below to law enforcement as needed.”
The document in question encourages police officers to call GameStop’s corporate headquarters if they have a problem with this policy.
LOL. I'm SURE that will work out...

I dont know but I'd like to try. There is also a problem with a guillotine. The spray of infectious blood would be less than ideal.El Guapo wrote: Thu Mar 19, 2020 5:29 pm Do you think we can orchestrate an angry pitchfork wielding mob where all the members of the mob are at least six feet apart from each other?
Sorta serious aside. Has anyone else noticed an uptick of people bagging on landlords? Like they are evil because they need to collect rent?

@Smoove_B - did you see this nonsense down in Springfield? Grocery store shut down due to sick shopper but the person didn't meet the criteria for Covid-19 and was just sent on their way...because that approach has definitely worked so far. Meanwhile a former co-worker who works presently at Rutgers tested positive. So I now directly know 2 who tested positive and another 2 who probably have it but can't get tested.

I did. I don't know the details, but I'm guessing they vomited and possibly passed out in the store, likely causing a panic. My local super market had something similar happen a few weeks ago (an ambulance came to take someone away) and there was low-level panic in the store. I think the person slipped on a puddle - totally unrelated to anything.
This is where the testing system is failing. They've boxed doctors in so much - both administratively and lack of resources (test kits), highly trained front-line medical workers aren't able to make judgement calls on the fly and recommend a test be offered out of an abundance of caution.
This entire operation hinges on their ability to test people that they (in their clinical experience) might have the disease or be in the early stages of it. Additionally, without an ability to quickly test front-line medical staff (police/EMT/fire, etc...) the entire system is going to collapse.
But I guess if they were all on an NBA team, they'd magically have tests in 6 hours.

After watching all the news on this tonight I had two bad thoughts come to me. Im a bad person I guess.
1. I wish there was some way to identify all these younger folks ignoring info and going to these big gatherings like Spring Break so that when they get sick they are refused any treatment.
2. To the scammers out there ripping off people with anything related to Convid 19 and knowingly doing it like fake products and cures and ransomware ....I hope you get it, I hope you die, and I hope you go to hell forever. Scum.

Hate to harp on it but this whole thing has exposed how sick and twisted our system is.Smoove_B wrote: Thu Mar 19, 2020 6:43 pmBut I guess if they were all on an NBA team, they'd magically have tests in 6 hours.

Re: Corona Virus/Superbug Thread: It's the End of the World as We Know It...
It's particularly jarring for me as I'm astounded that there isn't a greater realization that everything right now is resting on the shoulders of front-line medical staff, truckers, people in delivery/receiving, janitorial/cleaning staff, postal workers, solid waste workers...our entire way of life is teetering on the knife's edge right now. Meanwhile Trump is bragging that he can get better prices on stuff than the states and famous people are being tested after being around people that are coughing. I was talking to a friend earlier today that works in NJ mosquito control and her office is trying to get ready for the start of mosquito season. If they're suddenly unable to get out and start spread pesticides in the coming weeks (and into August and September) people and animals in NJ (and other states with mosquitoes) are going to be dying of mosquito-borne viruses as they venture outside to try and get fresh air.Hate to harp on it but this whole thing has exposed how sick and twisted our system is.
Like...I am genuinely happy Tom Hanks is ok, but when I see ER staff in NY are being told to reuse PPE because the hospital is out while Trump looks around wondering what could be done while marble-mouthing through the name of drug that hasn't been approved (or demonstrated) to be effective in treating this...it's soul crushing.
