Migration is Coming!

I wish I could give you a more specific date, and I will do my best to do so as I finish off the final few things that need to be done before I punt us to the new server. Tonight I will be attempting to get the mail server working in the new environment as well as backup scripts -- from there (on another day soon) I will disable the board, backup the database, move said database, restore it and repoint DNS records.

You will see the disabled post as I am going through the steps, but it would be a good time to make sure you don't have legacy static entries in your hosts file on your PC if you ever manually overrode what IP to point at (from previous migrations). Full backup, restore, test and DNS change should take anywhere from 2-5 hours (giving myself some whoopsie room) - DNS propagation once I make the edits to the zone file will take at least an hour to reach your ISP DNS server (they always say up to 24 hours, but that's rarely the case). Our TTL (time to live) on the DNS record isn't long so it should update fairly quickly.

My company changed payroll providers back at the beginning of August. It STILL isn't right.

Yeah we've been down the VM road before and it didn't end well. With the prolific posting over the years, the database is fairly chunky and a VPS was not the right environment for said DB.

Now if we wanted to truncate the post history to the last year, I could probably host it on a much smaller system - but I don't see that happening!

Not to worry I've actually restored the database twice, and was able to login and post/edit/delete etc fine. I'm sure there's going to be bumps along the way - but I'm running up against the deadline, so it's time to stop my navel gazing!
