A neighbor's dad just died from it and his mid-teens daughter has it as well. She's at home and "ok" but still not feeling great. He is understandably panicked.

He's negative as of the most recent test but he's isolating at home with his daughter and wife (antibody positive) so he expects to get it.

In the study, researchers at Northwestern Medicine looked back at the first 509 patients hospitalized within their network of 10 hospitals and medical centers in Chicago in March and April. Just over a quarter had been put on ventilators.

A majority of 509 [hospitalized] patients — 82 percent — developed problems stemming from the nervous system. "That means 4 out of 5 hospitalized patients in our hospital system at the beginning of the pandemic had those neurologic problems," said Dr. Igor Koralnik, a co-author of the study and chief of neuro-infectious diseases and global neurology at Northwestern Medicine.

Muscle pain was reported by nearly 44.8 percent of patients, and 37.7 percent complained of headaches.

Just under a third of patients developed a more serious type of neurological problem: encephalopathy, or altered brain function.

So I didn't feel very well this morning and asked to work from home. They denied this request because well they suck. And then they told me I have to get a test before I can come back. I can't get a test until tomorrow so I guess I'm on a temporary vacation during a very busy project. Whatever I have 2 weeks of vacation that aren't booked because there was nowhere to go, so bring it on. I really need to find a new job one of these days.

Every time I don't feel well, I call in vacation. My boss would believe she's doing me a favor and sends back request telling me to request sick leave. The thing is our vacation is use it or lose it. So come December 31st, I'll lose like 10 vacation days that no one will remember were sacrificed without compensation but they will see six sick days which were compensated and make me look like I'm abusing the system on paper. To add insult to injury. In mid November (well after I could meaningfully organize time off), I'll start getting email from HR informing me "You still have 15 vacation days remaining in 2021. As a reminder, your vacation time does not roll over into 2021 and will expire on the 31st of December."

I really need to have enough saved to retire one of these days. Oh medical, if it weren't for you, I'd start making arrangements today.

Trump announced on Twitter today that he's cutting off all Covid stimulus talks with the Democratic party until after the election.

Needless to say, even while Trump was touting record Wall Street numbers, the market took a nosedive immediately after Trump's announcement. The market is currently down 500+ points from when Trump made that tweet.

This makes no sense. They'd rather have you not working at all and burning PTO rather than just do the work remotely?

Setting a precedent. Making sure no one can claim that working from home is possible, ever. Either you're working in the office or you're on vacation. If someone can work from home a single day, they can do it all the time - and we can't have that.

I worked for 10 years at my previous job - a very small company of just the owner and 5 software devs, 3 of whom were based in Italy. The other dev got permission to work exclusively out at the APL site, since that's where he usually went anyway. I created several data processing pipelines for a NASA mission, did the same for a NOAA project, and some work for the Naval Ice Center during those 10 years. And some of that was working from home after my first daughter was born. But even then he was not comfortable with my working from home in the long term and I eventually had to show up to work 6 months after my daughter was born. And this was when it was just myself and him at the office.

I finally said screw it, jumped ship to APL, and never looked back. And when COVID started, APL sent out an email basically saying "If you can work from home, please do. Don't bring your germs here." I love my job.

My employer has taken the additional step of asking "We're not sure you even need an office here at corporate anymore. You good if we lease out that part of the building and you can work from home permanently?"

Part of me really likes it (I've put less than 500 miles on my car since March), but part of me recognizes the benefit of actually seeing other team members on occasion. Plus, I find it much harder to be motivated when working 100% from home. It's entirely too easy to slip into bad work habits that being in an office avoids.

That was the philosophy of this office until March 2020. Butts in seats or on the road. 7 months later, we're still not full speed on WFH precisely because a technical roadmap to effective WFH made for an empty office which looks bad to guests, I guess.

And you know what drove my crazy about this the most (aside from not technically preparing for the inevitability), The start of school when all of the young parents with their young ground zero infection monsters would come in to work sick in our wonderful new "open office" environment (which now looks like a empty buffet restaraunt with sneeze guards hanging around every "open" area and you could watch the spread of disease in nearly real time.

I'm not bitter.

There are now 123 Legislative Branch employees or contractors who have tested positive — or are presumed positive — for COVID-19, according to Ashley Phelps, a Republican spokeswoman for the House Administration Committee. This total has increased by 20 since Aug. 28.

The count includes 46 Capitol Police employees, 42 Architect of the Capitol employees and 35 contractors working on the Cannon Building renovation project. These numbers reflect total cases since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

As of Oct. 5, there are 22 Capitol Police employees who are on paid administrative leave.

Meanwhile, VP Pence is balking at the idea of Senator Harris' use of a plexiglass shield at the debate. Death.Cult.

Teacher at Mrs Skinypupy’s dance studio tested positive today. She taught an in-person class last Thursday. What’s the quarantine rules for the students that were in her class? 14 days from last Thursday? 14 days from today? No quarantine because it was 5 days ago? The CDC website is a bit unclear.

If you think about what you're trying to do while in quarantine, it would make more sense I think. Here, you're trying to minimize risk of spread so students should use their last day of contact with the teacher (Thursday) and stay quarantined through 10/15 and monitor themselves for symptoms.

Where it's confusing is that they can't go back in time and truly quarantine themselves from last Thursday until today, so in truth they need to (i.e. their parents) need to get a list together of everyone they had contact with between 10/1-10/6 and hand that information over to the contact tracers to allow them to notify those people to quarantine and monitor for symptoms for 14 days based on when they had contact with these kids.

What they're watching for is these kids to develop illness (assuming Thursday contact) sometime around Sunday or yesterday, but no signs of illness doesn't mean they're not infected. Here, they should be getting these kids tests tomorrow or Thursday to see where they stand.

It gets out of hand pretty quick.

My concern about what you're saying is that the teacher tested positive today. Without knowing when she developed symptoms that had her go and get a test, it's hard to say what the danger window is. However, the data is telling us people can be infectious 2-3 days before showing symptoms.

Maybe that's more information than you wanted to know, but if these kids are in the NFL it's actually much easier to deal with.

But seriously, I'd have to defer to your local health authorities here,and for my own sanity I need to assume they're involved and driving the process, because my liver can't handle any more.

Turns out the teacher has a daughter who was in quarantine last week because someone in her elementary school class had tested positive. The daughter never displayed any symptoms, and they were told that she could only get tested if she was showing symptoms. So they have no idea if the daughter had it, if the teacher got it from her or from somewhere else, or when or where the teacher may have been infected.

The teacher apparently called the state health dept tonight and was told that only those who she has come in contact with since her diagnosis (I.e. earlier today) are required to quarantine. The state said that the kids from last week should watch for symptoms, but do not need to quarantine. They also will not test those kids, unless they start showing symptoms.

Christ, no wonder this thing is so out of control.

Yeah, without appropriate testing everything goes out the window. I'm surprised at your State's advice - if she tested positive today it's not like a switch magically flipped and she wasn't infectious before the test results were delivered. Right now someone should be in touch with that teacher and running down all her contacts for the last 14 days - including her current close contacts (i.e. people she's living with).

Watching for symptoms is good advice, but if you're going about your business and not limiting contact, the cycle never breaks as invariably there are asymptomatic spreaders and/or infectious people spreading disease before they develop visible symptoms.

Flat out, if you've had contact with someone that's is a confirmed case, you should be self-quarantining until you're out of the danger window.

When people ask me why I haven't been in a supermarket or restaurant since March, and why I've been avoiding crowds and public spaces like it's my job, this is why.
