Getting some slowness

Post by Daehawk »

Seeing some random dragging occurring. When I first tried to load the site it sat and sat then timed out. I tried again and right before time out it loaded up.

I then tried to post in the sad pet thread about my little rat a 2nd time and after hitting submit it sat a min then nothing happened. The blue color of the submit button even went off. But no error. I clicked again and it loaded.

Seems good now.

It could be me as a speedtest I use timed out but then worked. Shrug.

Intermittent slow downs this morning. Wasn't sure if it was a tapatalk or forum issue.

Next time it happens please run a traceroute and paste it into a code block for me please, I didn't see this until now - and currently 'top' isn't showing anything chewing up memory or CPU. Wondering if it was not network pathing (especially if you had a speedtest timeout).

"tracert www.octopusoverlords.com" -- it's common for your router and last hop to be stars (you will probably want to mask out your external IP address as well).

Another option is to go to speedtest.net and hit "change server", search on "OVH" and pick "OVH Cloud, Beauharnois, QC" which is where our server resides -- that won't tell ou where the problem is, but at least it tells you what your current throughput is to the data centre versus your normal speedtest. Helps me understand if it's something on the server vs network internets.

I myself know what traceroute is but I am in the dark on pasting a code block.

But here's mine right now during just a very slight pause in posting after I click.

It's common for your router or cable modem to not show up in the traceroute (the second hop being * * *) -- also that hop 11 into OVH, normal screening firewall that won't respond to the trace. The rest of the hops look good, really we are looking for some long ping times in the middle that would indicate problems.

I did remove some variables on the mariadb config and cycle the daemon (that was probably the SQL gateway error you saw as it takes a moment to quiesce the database and restart it/load it back into memory).

Keeping an eye on it, I installed some other linux tools to help me parse logs easier, and I'm not seeing much that would indicate a performance issue yet.
