Data are our friend. But if you had 100% tracing compliance in a "community spread" situation you would undoubtedly wind up quarantining nearly everybody...so maybe the hammer's the right tool for the job.Smoove_B wrote: Thu Dec 17, 2020 11:30 pmRight, at some point it is indeed useless to stop spread because the virus is everywhere. However, we started out a ~50% refusal here in NJ back in July and it's only been trending worse.Kraken wrote: Thu Dec 17, 2020 11:23 pmDoes contact tracing really make much difference when the virus is endemic? It's like stomping on embers in a burning building.
And while it might not be great for stopping spread, it does help us fill in information about *how* it's being spread. The current argument now is we don't have data to prove small gatherings are responsible. We're definitely speculating (and maybe incorrectly), but without cooperation we really have no idea what's happening. Are all the people getting sick being exposed at work? Are they going to bars? Are they gathering with family? Are they out shopping? Going to churches or other religious gatherings? We're flying blind and not surprisingly then, flailing around with policy and executive orders. Without the data we don't have the ability to enact scalpel-like decisions. Instead, all we have left it the giant, unrelenting hammer.

Work makes us sign in stating we will report and isolate after any exposure.
Cooperating with contract tracing now means economic loss for themselves and others. With Congress doing nothing to stimulate, I predict everyone is afraid of a very bad January.

COVID-19 is now the leading cause of death in the U.S. , afaik an infectious disease hasn't been the leading cause of death in the U.S. since before the advent of antibiotics.
"It's been a long time since an infectious disease was the leading cause of death for the whole country," said lead author Steven Woolf, M.D., director emeritus of VCU's Center on Society and Health. "And it's a tragic milestone we could've prevented."
By October, COVID-19 was the third-leading cause of death for people ages 45 to 84 and the second-leading cause of death for those over 85. But those numbers were an aggregate of the previous eight months.
Since November, the weekly average for daily COVID-19 deaths has tripled, from 826 to 2,430 deaths per day, writes Woolf. Heart disease and cancer, which have been the leading causes of death for decades, cause approximately 1,700 and 1,600 deaths per day, respectively.

In case anyone from NJ wants to know where the COVID-19 MEGA VACCINATION TOUR will be stopping next year.
Spoiler:
But officials said New Jersey’s allocation of vaccine doses have been reduced by about 20% through the end of this year, including the expected addition of Moderna doses.
The state had expected to receive more than 492,075 doses this month for both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, but that number has dropped to 392,800, Persichilli said.
“I don’t think we’ve got a satisfactory reason why,” Murphy said. “It’s nothing personal. It’s apparently every American state has received a smaller allocation.”

The rail could bring supplies and obviously the complex is "optimized" for game day traffic. This would be much lower volume so you'd figure you could stream cars through it. Same thing at a PNC or possibly the Raritan center.Smoove_B wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 2:31 pm In a perfect world (to me), they'd get drive-through vaccinations figured out. We already do it for influenza, but I don't know if it's practical for whatever they're proposing for this. However, if they can do it, I think that would speed things up considerably - particularly if you can pre-register and get a printout with a bar code (or have your phone scanned).

New shit has come to light, man. Maybe someday we can do a drive-thru, but with the handful of stories its probably best to skip it for now. I still haven't seen anything suggested there should be widespread concern, just a doubling-down on the pre-screening questions they ask to try and minimize a reaction.Daehawk wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 6:21 pm What about the 15 min wait and monitor part for side effects and hospitalizations due to them? Saw that the medical lady that passed out while doing a news interview had a vagus nerve response. She said she can pass out from stubbing her toe or just any pain at all. That must be a horrible thing to live with. Stub your toe going in the store and pass out in the floor. Sneeze to hard and pass out. Driving must be nerve wracking.

Ontario to implement provincewide lockdown on Christmas Eve, sources say
The Ontario government is poised to impose a provincewide lockdown starting Christmas Eve, sources confirmed Sunday, as the province logs more than 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive day.
A 28-day lockdown for the southern portions of the province, south of Sudbury, Ont., will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, sources confirmed.
Meanwhile, the northern parts of Ontario will be under a 14-day lockdown, sources said.
The restrictions will look similar to the shutdown in March, with only essential businesses remaining open.
Under any scenario, Ontario would see 300 people in ICU by the end of the month, sources said. At the current rate of transmission, that would mean upwards of 700 people in the ICU by the end of January, and the number of new cases would grow to 10,000 per day.

I'm beginning to think the reason Trump was a fan of the "herd immunity" plan is because he knew it would have wide support.
More than 2 million people have passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the last two days, according to statistics provided by the Transportation Security Administration. This is despite official guidance to stay home for the holidays as the coronavirus pandemic rages and the nation's death toll continues to rise.
On both Friday and Saturday, about 1.07 million travelers passed through TSA checkpoints, the agency reported. That's down nearly 60% from last year, but still much higher than the typical checkpoint statistics since the pandemic began.
More than 17 million cases of the virus have been reported in the U.S., and over 317,000 people have died, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Yeah, I had no idea about either one of them. So gross. And speaking of gross:
https://twitter.com/SawyerHackett/statu ... 5699332104
What bothers me most (and I know this came up last week) is that all these (R) officials did everything they could to undermine COVID-19 response and now they're part of the initial fraction of a percent of people getting this shot.I know the argument is that it boosts confidence, but if I am going to choose to give a shot to a frontline worker or 49 year old Marco Rubio, guess who wins? It's not because Marco Rubio is an a-hole (he is). It's because he's in a lower risk category *and* he's easily replaceable. All of the doctors, nurses and technicians that have become sick and/or died? Not so much.
It's enraging.

It is indeed infuriating. They should, at least, be forced to publicly admit they were wrong and apologize for the deaths they helped contribute to, and forced to wear masks from now on and social distance. And pass a relief bill.

My gf in Florida went to get tested today and they told her she would hear her results in 7 - 10 days. It’s almost like Florida doesn’t want people to get tested...

My daughter was exposed at lunch at school in Ohio. We went to the testing that was done by the state. It took almost 10 days to get the results, and we had to fight with them, as they said that they lost the test... She was negative. These places are just swamped with the testing and are focused on the inpatients that the hospitals have. Labcor, and other testing companies were not designed with this volume in mind, not that they will tell you that.Ralph-Wiggum wrote: Mon Dec 21, 2020 6:17 pm My gf in Florida went to get tested today and they told her she would hear her results in 7 - 10 days. it's almost like constant covid-19 testing and contract tracing are basically not tenable in this current culture

If one goes to the free state run testing spots around me in SC, you'll get the results in 24-36 hours. We've had others go to private testing spots and it's 3-5 days.

She found another place that gets test results back in 24 hours and so went there this morning.

Spoke a little soon on my Gov. He isn't doing much after all. Limited gatherings to 10 unless you're a religion then you can cram all ya want in. Also no mask required. He is simply asking you to please pretty please wear one. He knows we'll all do it. Im sure we will. This is TN after all. Oh wait.
