And I'll acknowledge that it's a fair point. But the original statement ("I'm not bothered by it at all.") goes too far. It's enough to be very bothered. Enough to convict and condemn? No. But more than enough to be bothered, and more than enough to trigger some attempt to make sure that it's an exception and not the norm. Too bad that she's in the 'rich and powerful' crowd and possibly immune to consequences.

I'd be shocked if it was whether she's "rich and powerful.' CPS just doesn't have the manpower to deal with it. I personally know a teenager whose step dad was waving a gun and threatening to kill her. (2018) The authorities did nothing. My wife was beaten black and blue once and severely bruised another time. The authorities did nothing. (30 years ago).

Verbal abuse just isn't going to draw consequences.

And it is not fair to characterize my statement without including the modifier. It's amazing what context will do to a statement or action.

Ok... "If that's the worst of her abuse, I'm not bothered by it at all. " It doesn't really change the meaning or relevance of my response. How bad does abuse need to be before you're bothered by it?

That's an impossible question to answer as there are too many variables. I'm also not all that interested in a semantic argument over the word "bother."

I assume since you're so bothered by it, you called CPS?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like ND thinks he wrote "I'm not overly bothered by it". Which would probably have elicited some shrugs and maybe a couple of head shakes.

I don't think it's the "I'm not bothered by it" that is causing the problems. It's the "at all". I would be bothered at least a little if I was in the room and someone said any one of those things to their child. Likely not enough to do anything about it (at least in absence of a pattern). But I'd feel uncomfortable. It would at least register.

And to be fair, allegedly there's a lot more and it's clearly with her character, so it's really more likely she's an abusive, terrible parent.

Theodore Roosevelt (1908-09), after Grover Cleveland died in 1908.
Herbert Hoover (1933), after Calvin Coolidge died on Jan. 5, 1933, until Hoover left office on March 4, the last president to do so.
Richard Nixon (1973-74), after Dwight Eisenhower died in 1969, Harry Truman died in 1972 and Lyndon Johnson died in 1973. Nixon had no ex-presidents to turn to for advice during the Watergate scandal.

I was born in December 1968 (LBJ's lame-duck period before Nixon's inauguration), when Eisenhower and Truman were still alive.

I assume you were born in 1973 or 1974? Truman died December 1972 and Nixon resigned in August 1974.

I've lived with Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, Obama, Trump, and Biden.

I recently saw someone point out that the American Revolution was only five presidential lifetimes ago: Biden back to FDR to Arthur to Jackson to Washington.
