The office admin job didn't work out (they wanted more xp) but I have more work coming my way.

I got a job. It (on first blush) doesn't sound like it would be good for my career, but it might. On a lark I applied to 7-11 through Indeed. Went in for an interview and basically got to dictate terms of my employment. I'm starting out at $16.50, and I will be training towards an assistant mgr position, and I will be working there almost full time. I had exactly the skills they were looking for. I also got to basically set the hours I wanted to work. Start out at 5am and finish at 1. Medical insurance won't be a problem for a little while because OHP is keeping ppl on for the next six months regardless of eligibility. I work saturday but I have sunday and monday off. Which is fine. Saturday's just a day to me. Turnover is high but again, this is a struggle job that has potential to maybe turn into something more.

I am just taking this job in lieu of bigger and better things. My new job developer seems to have contacts in the office/admin/marketing field so I get to just finish starting off with him and we are going to be off to the races.

I know this job is prolly going to suck but the thing is, I need the money and the somewhere to be. Commute isn't *too* bad. 20-30m each way. And traffic shouldn't be bad going either way. Get in early and leave early. So. They need my skills and I need their money.

While feeding all the beasties out back I let a nice big fart. The smell followed all the way back to the house. It's like it was my baby and felt abandoned.

Congrats. You can turn stories of the crazy stuff you’re going to deal with at 7-11 into stories of how you have transferable skills and xp. You might even like it. Dealing with the public is also a skill you can develop.

+1. More doors will open for you once you demonstrate competence and reliability. Even staying within the chain, store management is very likely (turnover is terrible so opportunities are frequent), and that can lead to regional/district or corporate management if you want to stick with it.

One of my first jobs was cashiering in a convenience store. Shooing away the kids who hung around the parking lot was one of my hardest responsibilities, because I wasn't much older than they were. :) Couldn't call the cops unless they were shoplifting or harassing customers. For some reason, Stop-n-Go was a popular hangout for early-to-mid teenagers.

I’m going to suggest you start a journal, with the idea that you will some day write an epic turnaround semi autobiographical story.

One of my jobs when I was collecting them was 7/11 for $5 an hour at what was then the busiest 7/11 in the US. I busted hump there for three or four years. The raises were negligible but it paid the bills enough to pay for college as long as I lived at home with my parents.

Those days were were worth the journal. I was living Clerks. People asking if the ATM was broken, with the big old out of order, the teller is not responsible for the ATM sign on it. Old man complaining his coffee was too cold... after he poured it from the Slurpee machine. And it was crazy busy from the moment you walked in to moment you clocked out.

But be aware that after a long absence from work, losing the job (voluntarily or otherwise) too soon would have exactly the opposite effect. It would show you as unreliable to potential future employers. "Unhirable" is not a status you want to earn.

Which is why I do not plan on listing this job on my resume. Better an employment gap until I figure out if this job is physically and emotionally workable then listing a few week or a few months worth of employment.

So I am now OFFICIALLY newly hired. At or near full time by 7-11. I have a start date and everything. I was kinda afraid to count my chickens before they hatched but now I think that this is a done deal.

I've been reading about them on indeed ratings and it seems like they don't give breaks and short hours, and paychecks both of which I would have zero tolerance for. I'm hoping this is false.

Memorize the scene from The Simpsons when Homer goes to buy an assortment of odd/embarrassing items at the local kwiki mart, all at once: pornos, fireworks, cigarettes, lube, condoms, tampons, pregnancy test etc.

Post by Drazzil »

Man. Alive. Fuck restaurants, and warehouses and home caregiving providers. From a personal standpoint: I have been harassed, had recruiters actually neg me, a great fuckin whacking lot of the bastards don't read the profile that says everywhere I apply for work:

"NO WAREHOUSE OR HOME CAREGIVING POSITIONS CONSIDERED. YES THIS MEANS YOU!"

or the resume that says in 25 point font.

PIVOTING AWAY FROM HOMECAREGIVING AND WAREHOUSE WORK. DO NOT CONTACT ME WITH THESE POSITIONS!

I literally have these people texting me, e mailing me, automated messaging me with their GRAT OPPORTUNITY!1!! that starts out at 12-15 dollars an hour.

I had a recruiter text me today to ask me to apply for a "part time tutor position for autistic children" I said: "I need full time hours now and it sounds a little too much like elder care, No thanks. Best of luck!"

Him: "This is not elder care or home caregiving, it is autistic children part time and pays 13-16 an hour"

Me: "The answer was a polite "no thanks" Take it and move on. Again, best of luck!"

I've had companies ask me over and over to apply for the same position that they declined to interview me for. Home caregiver recruiters berate me for "not wanting to help people" You can imagine how that conversation went.

What I really need to do, regretfully is set my resume to "private" across all services, which kind of screws me because I get legitimate asks. 7-11 actually got ahold of me like this. Im being considered for a 30 dollar an hour telework position from a staffing company that saw my caregiver experience and wants to forward me to HR to consider to be a patient advocate. I'm not in *strong* consideration but *still*.

*tears out what's left of his hair.*

I used to get like 50 positions requesting me for warehouse or home caregiving a day, even though I put a thoughtful sort of "Wanting to pivot away from warehouse and homecare into the office field" "Office and clerical work offers only please"

Cut the number from 50 to like 45 a day.

"No warehouse or caregiving positions considered" in like 30 font and red cut that number of unsolicited asks to around 15-20 across all mediums.

The next one is gonna be great big flaming animated strobing burning color changing eye watering laser underlined letters in fifty font:

NO HOME CAREGIVING OR WAREHOUSE POSITIONS ACCEPTED, YES THIS MEANS YOU!!/YOUR POSITION! PEOPLE WHO CANNOT READ ENGLISH WILL BE MOCKED AND TREATED RUDELY!!

Which of course, puts me out of being considered for just about *any* position.

facepalm.

For what it's worth I'm an executive with an insurance company now; and I still get recruiter emails asking if I'm interested in a contract position (3 months) as a Siebel developer... So, in 1996 I did have to support the infrastructure for a Siebel implementation -- at no point does my resume say "Siebel Developer". One keyword, bam, auto email.

It's the generation of bots, just move on and ignore/block those recruiters.

Its not just e mails and stuff. Its like texts and calls. But yes. I am entirely too wound up by a bot forwarding me to a recruiter who never bothered reading the profile. Entirely... The job market is like an abusive girlfriend. When I finally decide to split, calls and texts and e mails. And here I am like *swipe left* swipeswipeswipeswipeswipeswipe* and its all the same girl.

I've got 20+ years of support. Up to and including Tier 3. And I still occasionally get offers for a call center position. I generally just roll my eyes and delete the email. As Fishpants noted, one key word can haunt you. But getting upset definitely won't make you feel better. :)

Edit: Though I definitely understand the anger/frustration when they won't listen. As a home owner, my personal annoyance are the people that knock on my door trying to sell me something. I try to be polite. But when someone won't accept a polite refusal.... well... I've lost my cool a time or two.
