I’m just going to assume the people saying they didn’t like AD in the recent posts, started watching with the reboot which is a very different, despicable and unfunny thing. It’s better that way.
Nope, like I said, eventually the whole thing, starting all the way at the beginning, arrived on Netflix. Wasn't about to start where the revival continued. Didn't care for it. Didn't care much for its particular brand of humor.

It's very hard for me to get sucked into comedy shows. I usually just not in the mood for it. Curb Your Enthusiasm might be the best comedy ever made, but even with that I rarely sit down and turn on an episode. I'm not sure why as I love to laugh. But given the choice, I'll take a great drama over a great comedy any day of the week.
Yeah, I have a hard time with comedy shows too. Humor is very much a subjective thing. And aside from very few sitcoms, I have a very hard time getting into them. Something about the over-the-top acting styles.
I'm just teasin' you folks. To each their own. While I can't understand not loving Arrested Development, there are plenty of things you all like that I can't stand. It's Saul good.
I wonder sometimes if people that have dysfunctional family experiences enjoy Arrested Development the most and for others the show just isn't relatable? I don't think I have family dysfunction, but I enjoyed the hell out of AD, so who knows? I just liked the sharp writing and layers and layers of jokes and payoffs.
Similar to how Community spent 3 (?) seasons making a slow-rolling Beetlejuice joke that paid off with a quick Easter egg. I appreciate that kind of humor.

Heh, I see what you did there.
Smoove, that's a good analysis actually. I've found that I have a hard time with anything that shows a dysfunctional family. I can tolerate it in spurts, like if it's the plot of a movie, but anything that has me around them for a length of time is a turnoff. Yet I loved Shameless. Go figure. But that's I think because I find the writing compelling enough.

My wife and I loved AD and knowing the theme, we tried Shameless. She barely made it through the first episode; it was too much. Sarcastic and passive-aggressive relatable dysfunction (AD) is funny. Abusive (mental, physical)...not so much.

I hadn't really thought about it, but that could be true. Nothing in AD connected with me at all, and that may be part of the reason why. I found the same thing with both Schitt's Creek and Shameless.
Like Rumpy, I don't tend to enjoy shows with severely dysfunctional family relationships. Dysfunctional adult relationships are fine, but family...not so much. Maybe it's because we're so actively working to avoid having those passive-aggressive or bully behaviors take root in our kids that I have a hard time finding them funny.
Then again, I never really cared for those sort of shows before I had kids either, so...

I watched quite a bit of the original English version of Shameless. I enjoyed it well enough. Although I wouldn't call it a comedy. Maybe a dramedy.
Yeah, I think it's more of a dramedy. And what makes it work for me is that the characters do change and grow. One of my favourite storylines is Philip's struggle with alcoholism and his mentorship with his professor. I found that very compelling. He's definitely not the same as he was in the beginning.

Interesting that you mention Schitt's Creek as that's another I'm constantly told to check out, but I checked out one or two episodes and that was enough for me to say nope. I'm just not attracted to it and I'm actually surprised it's as popular as it is.

Finished Squid Game tonight. Great show that is well-deserving of all the praise, but I don’t feel like it quite stuck the landing. Major ending spoilers:
Spoiler:
- Felt like the random shard of glass ultimately taking out Kang Sae-baeck (the North Korean girl) was kind of a cop-out. I get why they did it (Sang-Woo wouldn’t have been able to finish the job if she wasn’t weakened), but it felt rather cheap for such an awesome character.
- The cop and Front Man being brothers was never really explained and seemed very randomly tacked on. That “big reveal” added nothing, especially given it’s resolution.
- Feels like we’re really just left with a couple options on what happens next. GI-hun either goes on a revenge rampage, or he joins the game again and tries to take it down from the inside. Neither of those seems particularly interesting, tbh.
Thoroughly enjoyed the show, but thought it could have had a better ending.

Well, that and Catherine O’Hara is positively a national treasure….of Canada.
You’d know that if you were Canadian.
Yes, of course. And she debuted on SCTV.
Oh man, the great SCTV. I wish some streaming service had all those to watch.
Yeah, I'm not sure about the rights. The thing about old Canadian TV and movies is that they're often in Limbo. And that's if they've had the foresight to offer them up digitally. There's a lot of older stuff that unfortunately will never resurface because the Canadian nation doesn't do a very good job of archiving unlike in the U.S where everything is added to the Library of Congress. Your best bet would be finding episodes on Youtube.

It's complicated, but it's not true that everything is in the Library of Congress.

Well, a whole lot more than is done here for sure.
One other thought on Squid Game that’s been bugging me the more I think about it today.
Spoiler:
while the reveal about the old guy was cool and surprising, I was really hoping that the reasoning behind the games would have been something more substantial than “a bunch of rich dudes were bored”. That was remarkably anti-climatic.[/spoilers]

Nah, statistically speaking, you folks are a blip on the radar.
Now get back to finding out where I can watch SCTV. I don't have all day, you know. I gotta rewatch Arrested Development seasons 1 through 3 again and try to figure out if there's a cure for you people.

I just finished it last night. It was a good watch but I honestly don't get the extreme amount of hype. Well I guess I kind of do but I also don't lol. When all is said and done it's fairly derivative of a number of other movies and shows. Is it because it involves a kid's game that sets it apart? Or poor people? It combines elements of a lot of things I have liked in the past, so I guess I'm curious why this became such a big phenomena. Maybe I'm just jaded. To not spoil anything, I will even put my comparisons into a spoiler.
Spoiler:
I feel like I've seen most of this done before, I'd call it a combo of Hunger Games, The Purge, Hostel, Saw and Escape Room. Torture porn meets dystopian game world. With a little bit of Academy Award winning Paranoia thrown in the mix for the poor people in Korea flavor lol. The old guy being a part of it was a decent twist, but that's been done in the Saw series (having an internal mole "play" alongside the main players).
I guess what does set it apart is that there were a lot more people playing, and many people being wiped out at a much faster rate than similar stories. And in addition, they WILLINGLY chose to participate, even after learning they could be shot if they lost. I guess that's a more disturbing edge as it goes to how desperate they were.
To be clear I am not saying it was bad, I definitely enjoyed it. It just seems like the hype was that it was so new and fresh, where I felt like I'd seen most if not all of the elements before.

I've been a huge fan of The Last Kingdom on Netflix and was sad that it was all coming to an end with the fifth season in 2022. However, they just announced that we would be getting an additional two hour movie after the last season, so this is great! More The Last Kingdom!

Whelp, while the first season of Another Life was universally disliked, I still ended up liking it. Season 2 however? They've somehow ended up making it even worse. It's completely unwatchable. I couldn't stand more than 3 episodes. It's the most annoying, confusing and disjointed mess I've seen. Ends up feeling even more generic than the first season.
Finished Squid Games. While I enjoyed it, I'm still scratching my head over the fact that it's soon to become (if not already has become) the single most watched show on Netflix.

I've been watching Squid Game. While I love the premise and the cliffhangers keep me coming back, I am not that crazy about the subplots and talky talk. They could focus more on the actual games. Possibly the international appeal explains some of the success.
