Honestly I think it's the clicks/eyeballs at this point. They face increased competition with other spaces like the online right-wing cesspools and it's spurred a race to the bottom.
Big picture I think they've reliably staked out ground out as an important cog in the propaganda pipeline. Whether it is taking a Biden speech, GOP reps and senators yelling word salads at a committee hearing turned into soundbite, or Trump babbling, they have the resources to put out compelling prop-agit product for the smooth brains who consume their trash product. The usage of that fade of Biden's hand? That was put together by someone who knows that it's way less jarring to fade it than a jump edit where it just vanishes suddenly. This dreck is churned out and snipped down to clips to weaponize in the social media space.
