Re: COVID-19 treatment and vaccine update thread
Halifax is nice, and I *really* liked Cape Breton - but holy moly when the tourists leave it's pretty quiet, the winters can be pretty brutal (same for Thunder Bay). Guess it depends on what you are after weather wise and how much "citying" you need near you.Smoove_B wrote: Fri Dec 10, 2021 5:01 pmThe wife likes the ocean and I want to join the Fellowship of the Dig, so it works out.I honestly don't know how we can petition to relocate as I'd imagine they want us to demonstrate work/employment prospects.
Regardless, I've been looking at both Nova Scotia and the area around Thunder Bay, Ontario. I've been told people with the same family name settled there in the early 1900s, so I might have "relatives" in the area. Not sure if that would help, but it's like they really want me to do it.
Also our real estate market has been and will continue to be mental - all kinds of money laundering going on here in Canada through real estate, and since it's a massive part of our GDP the politicians are too chicken shit to do anything about it, so bring cash!

How much do I need? I don't think Canada is keen on admitting elderly Americans, but Wife has Canadian ancestry and we can pay bribes. I've spent a lot of time in Ontario and have considered it an escape route since the Vietnam War. I'm not afraid of winter and would love to live there if I can still draw my social security. In a couple of years I hope you'll look favorably on refugee status.

Hey guys. The wife and I had J&J original shots then snuck in a single Pfizer full-shot in September. Any clue how protected we are with this combo? Do you feel we're good for the up-coming Omicron mess?

To keep it simple, be able to answer, "What can you do for Canada?" with every detail in the 'plus' column.
I'll be honest, it's pretty depressing knowing that you're completely and totally unwanted and unwelcome everywhere in the world as useless, save for the one place that has a legal obligation to let you stay.

Depends where you want to live to be honest. In the Toronto area (and surrounding areas by 1-2 hour drive time) a townhouse is going to cost 750k. Anything with property that isn't a shithole will run a million + (the closer to toronto, the more it is). Condos are more affordable, especially since corona in Toronto - the mass exodus out has made the pricing marginally less mental.Kraken wrote: Sat Dec 11, 2021 2:31 amHow much do I need? I think the thing that most ex-pat americans I know have a hard time with is the daily graft on everything in Canada, 13% sales tax, sin taxes on booze and cigarettes, higher income taxes than you'd be used to. Cost of living is higher, but health care is covered (this also declines the further away from metro areas).

I would give the government 90% of my income if I never had to pay bills again. Didn't know Toronto was that expensive, though. 'Course, those are loonie prices, so everything's discounted 20%.FishPants wrote: Sat Dec 11, 2021 9:41 pmDepends where you want to live to be honest. You can offset that with a slice up for Saskatchewan and (probably) Alberta. They'd probably both opt to be in Jesusland, given the chance.

Thunder Bay is a fairly nice sized city. Not too big and not too small, if that's what one is after. It's actually further up north from my location, and winters are quite brutal. But one thing to consider is that it's in Northern Ontario, which because of the Province's size, doesn't always feel like it gets fair representation, roads are often in worse condition with amenities and services being few. There's also a shortage of doctors up in Northern Ontario and it can be quite hard to get and retain a family doctor. Most tend to just use walk-in clinics for their needs as a result.

WTF is that video? Not a Carnival ad (99% sure). For the first 30 - 60 seconds I thought it was making fun of Carnival...but if it's that, it's doing it very poorly. Seems like an explanation for the structure of a Carnival ad? Was this made for like an advertising class or something?

Could be worse. At least I get to supply my own on-hold music.

Edit: I spoke too soon. When I did get on, the system shows zero vaccination sites available to me.
When I expanded the search radius, it did start to show sites in other cities, so I'm guessing there was a snafu in uploading scheduling data, either at the local or provincial level.
