Gee, Netfllix. You need to do better at recapping a series if it's come back 2 years later. A series we had liked and watched and were looking forward to only lead to confusion once it leaped right into the events following season 1's finale. The recap they had didn't cut it. In the end, we ended up giving up on it as it ended up being too confusing. It's the feeling of being away from something for too long and having to relearn who everybody is again.

We watched Home Team with our kids over the weekend and it was surprisingly entertaining. The plot is super thin, but Kevin James does a good job and it's good for a few laughs. It's not great cinema, but I enjoyed it much more than expected.

Google it. There’s often a wiki for shows that covers seasons in detail.

Eh, it's not really worth googling it. I'm getting the same impression from other people who've seen season 2, that they've also had a hard time getting back into the characters, and the impression is that they've also changed them from the first season. It's one of those fluffy shows that isn't really different enough to be worth the bother to make an effort for.

What's gotten lost in all this back and forth about spaghetti westerns and The Harder They Fall (which is good but not great - 6 out of 10) is that Godless is fantastic. If you haven't seen it yet (it was apparently released in 2017) stop watching whatever dreck you are watching and go watch it right now. If you enjoyed Deadwood I think you'll enjoy this. I'd rate it just a bit below Deadwood.

Oh, I absolutely agree about Godless. I'm actually doing a rewatch of it after originally having seen it when it first came out. I do think it shares a lot with Deadwood.

I enjoyed Godless but I wouldn’t put it anywhere near Deadwood. Godless is a traditional western with a traditional revenge tale that’s about on par with The Harder They Fall in that regard. It’s only twist is the addition of the female centric storyline that occasionally pops up when they’re not focusing on the men.

Which is fine by me. I love a traditional western with a traditional revenge tale.

But Deadwood? Deadwood is friggin’ Julius Caesar in the west. It did things that people are still discussing to this day.

Artillery and cavalry combat up front and a retreat under fire at the end bookend the film, with little combat in between the Taming of the Shrew antics.

Godless is so much better than The Harder They Fall. Godless has better writing, better acting, and is a much more nuanced show. THTF simply doesn't have the run time to get as deep into the characters and story. Actually, there's literally one story in THTF but there are numerous ones in Godless. The main villian alone in Godless has more story and character development than the entire THTF movie. Jeff Daniels, despite being much more ruthless, is a much more human character. THTF has more style while Godless has significantly more substance. I stand by my rating of just a bit below Deadwood. IMDB rates Godless 8.3, Deadwood 8.6, and THTF at 6.6.

Let's look at an aggregate score derived from multiple professional critic and audience reviews.

Listen, they're all very good. But Godless is nowhere near the same league as Deadwood when it comes to story. Part of that is because Deadwood had years to tell its story, as you mention when you note that Godless had more time to dive into its characters and their motivations/lives than THTF. But it's also because the writing on Deadwood was far more dense in its narrative than Godless, which at the end of the day, really was just a traditional western story about revenge and redemption.

....not that there's anything wrong with that. I love a traditional western, like I said.

Rotten tomatoes score is not a measure of how good a movie is. It's a measure of how many critics rated a movie positive. It's a bunch of people answering the question, "Is this movie good?" A score of 100% doesn't mean the movie was great. It means 100% of the critics rated it (roughly 3.5 stars out of 5). It's a barometer for mediocrity.

Uh....

Anyway, IMDB reviews are based entirely off whether or not a site viewer (i.e. not professional film critics) bothers to leave a review. Most people only do so if they love or hate something. The score skews in favor of fanboys or haters.

Agreed 100%. There are tons of Westerns on Netflix, all of varying budgets, and IMHO, Godless is up there as being the best.

Ehhhh. It's definitely a proxy for how good a movie is ASSUMING you trust professional critics' reviews on the whole. And I know plenty of people that don't.

For me, the rating is very VERY rarely "wrong" - and for whatever reason, I tend to (and sometimes demand that others) rate EVERYthing around me, including meals that I cook, etc..

But I do think it's a very personal thing....their system probably either works for you, or it doesn't. Take my sister...she's a counter-indicator on movies compared to my tastes. Will probably hate a movie I love, and vice versa. And she thinks RT is garbage (and not surprisingly, thinks movie critics' opinions in general are garbage :D)

Read the about page that I linked. RT is pass/fail. IMDB is ABCDF. They are doing completely different things.
The Tomatometer score represents the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive for a given film or television show. A Tomatometer score is calculated for a movie or TV show after it receives at least five reviews.
The score is the percent of positive reviews and IS NOT rating of the quality of the movie.
When at least 60% of users give a movie or TV show a star rating of 3.5 or higher, a full popcorn bucket is displayed to indicate its Fresh status.

Again, this is the percent of people who rate the movie at 3.5 or better. A 100% movie does not mean it's a great movie. It means 100% of the audience would rate the movie 3.5 or above out of 5.

I find your ideas confusing and wish to unsubscribe from your newsletter, please. :P

Let me come at this from a different angle: positive (or negative) reviews generally indicate the quality of a movie. AGAIN with the massive caveat regarding your opinion of pro reviews in general.

Not sure where the disconnect is, here.

You know that Captain Marvel has a higher IMDB rating than THTF, right? It's at 6.8 on IMDB.
By contrast, it's at 79/49 on RT.

The audience review on RT kind of proves my point about relying solely on user reviews. They get "review bombed" quite often. But the critic review rating helps to offset that.

I still rely more on RT for a more realistic view of how good a film is than I do IMDB. I like having access to both a general audience take on a film, and a professional critic aggregate.

I use IMDB solely as a database lookup tool rather than for reviews. I can't remember the last time I looked at RT for a score though.

I tend to view critic reviews through the prism of "Is the movie *technically* good?" Professional critics are looking at direction, production value, pacing, editing, performances, writing, etc. in a way that the average Joe on the street may not. I look at audience reviews through the prism of "Was I entertained?" with little analysis beyond that.

Through them both I think you can get a pretty good idea of where the movie lies, and RT is particularly valuable in that it offers both scores so you can do that comparison.

I don't particularly like IMDB scores because they're somewhat meaningless - any registered user can vote for a movie whether they've seen it or not. While that's also true of RT in terms of audience score, at least you have the critic score to balance that out.

Of course with any rating system you use often enough, you'll start to get a feel for where you personally fall compared to that site's ratings. For me, RT tends to be closer to my true feelings about a film, while IMDB tends to run about a point lower.

Overall, however, I don't think any review site is fine-tuned enough to nail it exactly, particularly since everyone's view is different. They're best used as a tool to set a general expectation.

P.S. Side tangent - I kind of hate the "I don't trust movie critics" mentality. Most professional critics have seen more movies in their life than you've ever dreamed about seeing. They know their shit, they know their history. They may down a film you like because they recognize it's a lazy rip-off of a foreign movie you've never heard of before. Their job is to give you an informed opinion based on a lot of experience. While it's fine to disagree with them (I disagree with a lot of movie critics), I still respect their opinion because I know it's probably based on a lot more information than I have.
