Just got a call that my uncle passed away around 5:00 this morning. That makes two aunts, two uncles, and two cousins that have all died in the past 6 months. Granted, all the aunts and uncles were in their 90's, but that still doesn't make it easier. I've got another uncle who just went into hospice care this week, so I suspect that we'll likely be adding him to the list soon as well.

If the grim reaper could maybe just give our family a pass for the next couple weeks, that'd be great.

Very sorry to hear that, Skiny. Last year was pretty rough on my family, as well. My mom lost both her brother and her sister within 4 months of each other. I was sitting with her and she had this blank, sad expression on her face, then she looked at me and said, "I'm the only one left." Heartbreaking.

It's tough having to deal with many deaths in a short period of time. My nephew lost both of his grandmothers within 4 days of each other, and then his father not too long after.

The older generation has pretty much all expired at this point, meaning next up is...oh shit.

It was only 40 years from Guess Who's Coming to Dinner to Guess Who Got Elected to the White House.

Just finished watching "Guess Who's..." again for the first time in decades, and it still impresses. What a cast, and (unfortunately) it's still pertinent 55 years later. Only the actress who plays Poitier's fiance is outmatched by the star power around her. Hard to believe that Spencer Tracy died just 17 days after this movie wrapped -- it's not his greatest film, but he's clearly still all there. If you haven't seen this movie in a long time (or ever), it's worth its runtime. Streaming on Stars or rent it on Prime.

The legendary Mickey Gilley has passed on. I always liked him and his music in the 80s. He had a long run at 86. Guess he got his 2001 age 65 wish granted.

“If I had one wish in life, I would wish for more time,” Gilley told The Associated Press in March 2001 as he celebrated his 65th birthday. Not that he’d do anything differently, the singer said.

Gilley died Saturday in Branson, Missouri, where he helped run the Mickey Gilley Grand Shanghai Theatre. He had been performing as recently as last month but was in failing health over the past week.

“He passed peacefully with his family and close friends by his side,” according to a statement from Mickey Gilley Associates.

Gilley — cousin of rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis — opened Gilley’s, “the world’s largest honky tonk,” in Pasadena, Texas, in the early 1970s. Norm Macdonald Filmed a Secret Standup Special To Be Released After His Death

Norm Macdonald has the last laugh after it’s been announced the comedian secretly filmed one final stand-up special before his death.

Macdonald died last September at the age of 61. But the comedian shot a private one-hour stand-up special, which was filmed in his living room. The special, titled Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special, will premiere on Netflix on May 30.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Macdonald went to the hospital in 2020 and was told the results were not good. And before he was set to go in for a procedure, Macdonald set out to film a special. “He wanted to get this on tape just in case — as he put it — things went south,” said Macdonald’s long-time producing partner Lori jo Hoekstra to THR.

“It was his intention to have a special to share if something happened.”

I still remember watching Timerider in the theater when it came out. As a 12 year old, it was a great movie. I'm not sure it would hold up upon re-watching.

But I like him in everything he did.

His representatives said he died in hospital in France where he was being treated.A fascination with outer space found voice in 2016’s Rosetta, dedicated to the space probe of the same name, and Nasa appointed his 1993 piece Mythodea (which he claimed to have written in an hour) as the official music of the Mars Odyssey mission of 2001. His final album, 2021’s Juno to Jupiter, was inspired by the Nasa probe Juno and featured recordings of its launch and the workings of the probe itself in outer space.
