And of course the human body is hardly optimized for being human.

We stepped (mostly) off the path of natural selection by developing big brains that favored complex social cooperation and communication, but we did so before (for example) our pelvis completely adapted to a bipedal stance and before our skulls worked out the wisdom-tooth problem. That's why many prehistoric/ancient humans died while giving birth or from infected gum damage.

Saw a guy once in town had 2 thumbs.Just below his normal thumb between it and his wrist was another full thumb. I dont recall how usable it was..I think it moved with his other thumb. I remember thinking it looked like a rooster spur.

It's hard to post something light after reading dbt's post but I saw 12 bunnies on my walk this morning, shattering the previous record of five. I said Hello bunny to every single on of them, except the two I saw in a pair, to which I said Hello bunnies.

That's what I keep telling myself.
My phobia never was really an issue until both of my daughters decided to move out West.
Now it's a 36 hours train ride plus a 3 hour drive either North or South to see them.

On the 400-mile drive up to take a kid to camp, we saw the aftermath of two bad motorcycle accidents within an hour. In both cases, it looked one rider in a touring group of a dozen or so bikes (two separate groups) had hit or been hit by a car. Ambulances were on the scene in both cases.

Both were on I-87 in upstate New York. The cycle groups seemed to be middle-aged touring types, not leather riders.

Motorcycle carefully!

When I saw your post, I was honestly coming back into the thread to edit it to "Motorcycle carefully! Most drivers aren't looking."

And of course in both accidents it was the cyclist in the ambulance.

That may be true. I've not read the stats. Bikers will always tell me it's true. But I see a lot of reckless bikers.

That said, Watch for bikers! Your two ton hunk of metal does a lot of damage.

Bit of excitement tonight. I was just upstairs playing on my computer when someone downstairs called out in panic, "Kasey! Kasey! Call 911! Someone's having a stroke!"

(You may remember I rented out my bottom floor to a mahjong parlor)

I am like... Why can't you call 911 yourself? But since I'm probably the best English speaker in the house, I guess it falls to me. I grabbed my phone and dialed 911 as I ran downstairs. Someone is almost falling out of the chair and two guys are holding him. He was conscious, but not responsive, eyes closed. He lost one shoe.

I know from my general knowledge this could either be a seizure or a stroke. As I was not there, and only saw the aftermath, I decided to be clear, gave the address and cross street, and an ambulance was here in minutes. The 911 operator was a bit brusque, but that comes with the job. I kept being interrupted by the other players who were helping with the "cleanup" and they were making way too much noise that I had to walk outside, and gave as much information as I could.

I still didn't figure out whether it was a stroke or seizure, and even the security cam wasn't of much help as it only caught his back. But the important thing is he's in the ambulance and on the way to the hospital. The rest is up to someone else.

There are plenty of careful drivers/riders. There are also plenty of careless/inattentive drivers and reckless riders.
In my opinion though, we call motorcycles dangerous, because in a collision between car and bike, the car always wins.

A guy I used to work with was an avid cyclist. He always rode on the sidewalk because he reasoned that he had a much better chance of surviving a collision with a pedestrian than with a vehicle. When pressed on the issue, he just flat out stated that he wasn't concerned with how it would go for the pedestrian.

Clearly, he hadn't met anyone who can clothesline him off a bike... or a cop who'd give him a ticket for riding on the sidewalk.
