I've had one claim in 35 years of driving. For my one claim from AAA, I got a $400 tort payment and they restricted my car from getting anything but PLPD after that claim. Not sure if I should feel lucky or jipped for all the insurance money I've put in house and car over the years. I've spend over $50,000 on auto insurance alone, far more than I've spent on purchasing cars (a total of under $30,000, though that's likely to double in the next year or two). You'd think they could roll that into my health insurance costs or allow me to get dental after I get the boot from the privilege of paying for COBRA. :character-oldtimer: .

Anybody used to watch this series back in the eighties? They have been remastered and upscaled to HD. They bring back a lot of memories...

That was fascinating. In the shorts at the end, it was mentioned that this was filmed in 1987. Sometime in the early nineties (circa 1994), I was part of an undergraduate vibroacoustics course where Whirlpool had reached out to have student groups provide ideas for amelioration in their washer products. They had provided a top-loading washer or two and the class was broken into groups of four or five each, directed towards coming up with vibration reduction ideas for specific parts of the wash cycle. I knew nothing about how a washer worked, so watching this video would've gone a long way towards getting me (and nearly all of my classmates) up to speed. I recall us all getting together one weekend in the basement of the MEEM (one floor *above* where my eventual office would be as a grad student, housed in the sub-basement's Dynamic Systems Lab) the entire group of us, with the shell of the washer pulled away, notebooks and pencils in hand, eagerly watching and noting various aspects of what went into a wash cycle. No concrete blocks (or concrete-filled pulleys) nor cam-driven timer systems at that point. But pretty much everything else was as shown in the "modern" washer depicted in the second half of the video. None of us had suggested adding a significant mass "damper" to the structure (the evolution in the seven years which followed would've included rubber mounting bushings and the like, replacing the stonework inside), and I rather doubt any of the groups provided anything actionable for Whirlpool (though one of my classmates also joined me in the grad program and she eventually took her first job with Whirlpool, so maybe something did come from it all...). If there are more eighties time-frame household videos to be shared, I'd certainly be interested in watching them.

Glad you enjoyed it! For more videos, search YouTube for "The Secret Life Of Machines" and be sure to look for the remastered versions. I've current got the fax, refrigerator and a few others queued.

I finally got time to watch it all. For 1987 it looks like 1967 lol. So primitively old it looks.

I regret to report that Impossible™ Sausage in not very good. Not terrible, but it does not approximate the "real meat" experience nearly as well as their burgers.

The biggest problem is the casing and how it's packed. It's closer to a wrapper than a casing. It does not develop any snap when cooked, doesn't shrink or split.

The other problem is the filling, which tastes exactly like Impossible burger meat. That taste is very good for a burger, but it's not sausage. It also doesn't release nearly as much moisture when cooked; there's no sizzle, no juices leaking out.

I like Impossible burgers pretty well. I will tolerate an Impossible sausage if it's the only option.

I've been tempted to try it. Now I don't have to.

I like the Beyond brand a little more than Impossible. It makes a fully passable hamburger and works great in chili and similar dishes where meat is only one ingredient.

Yeah, the impossible sausage is bad. I like the gardien breakfast sausage. But I have not found a suitable replacement for any of the proper sausages.

i do have to give Samsung credit for workmanship otherwise - never had a CRT monitor this long. (the reason i got this one was because my previous monitor - a 17" or 19" ViewSonic CRT - started flipping out in 2008... like literally, the display just started rolling on the screen. current monitor was a second-hand purchase from craigslist - it has an analog TV tuner and composite and S-Video inputs as well, but only a VGA connector for the PC - no DVI, much less DisplayPort or HDMI)
this monitor just 'broke-ked up' on me. i hit the source select button and it stayed on "Aux 1" and would not go off that source input. even powering on the TV tuner attached to that input didn't display anything. powering off the monitor and powering it back on - still nothing, stuck permanently. it is (of course) super not worth fixing and it's going to eWaste. i'm now using a 16:9 aspect ratio monitor on my home gaming PC for the first time. (and now i can play STRAFE again, as there's a bug in the game where it doesn't display properly on 4:3 monitors)

Have you tried unplugging whatever is in that port and trying other then turning power back on to see if it will autodect the new plug and not anything in that Aux slot?

Well, that's weird.

Just got an e-mail from Twitter that says my account has been suspended for "Violating our rules against platform manipulation and spam". Only...it's not for my account. It's for a completely different account account that we've never had. The account name was something like "twinmomSLC" so I thought it might have been something that Mrs Skinypupy set up, but nope.

I typically just ignore these things, but the e-mail did actually came from from Twitter.com and all the links go directly back to Twitter's site, so it certainly looks legit. If it's a scam, I can't figure out where and how.

We have twin boys, hence why I thought it may have been something she set up.

Thai serial thief steals hundreds of mobile phones while clad only in his underwear.

At first, you're like "he's a criminal!".

But then you read his reasons:
I only steal from BANANA stores because I like bananas and I like the color yellow. I like to take my clothes off and I like to only wear underpants. It gives me a feeling of confidence and I feel like myself.
and you can't help but nod your head and think to yourself, "there but for the grace of God".

That he then gave away many of the phones to the homeless makes him into Robin Hood...if Robin Hood wore white briefs while taunting the Sheriff of Nottingham.

...wait...that script writes itself, doesn't it.

I had the same exact email a few months ago on a Twitter account I’ve used maybe once.

Log into that account, it should say it’s suspended and you can’t post… then you know the email was probably legit. But also check as hepcat mentioned. It was a pain to get it resolved but I did receive a response from Twitter apologizing that it was suspended erroneously by their automated bot.

yup did that - had just the VGA display from the PC connected, power cycle - nothing happened. not sure this monitor has autodetection...

V1 is a composite video cable port. tried a Retron NES-knockoff console and a DVD player, as well as the digital TV tuner that was originally plugged into it - no display at all (not even the native monitor OSD) and it can't be switched off of it.

EDIT: also just noticed the power brick casing had split in half - the plastic was all cracked and the two halves no longer fits together. that doesn't seem to have anything to do with this issue, tho.

Looks like they're fixing it. Estimate is around 5 grand. The time though is 15 days. Ah well, Geico got me a nice SUV in the meantime. I'll enjoy cruising in a larger automobile for a couple of weeks. Maybe I'll take up hauling stuff. Texarkana is still a big hauling destination, right?
