Same here. Her life became a struggle, she was hot then not. I also didn't think she was that old.

I knew a few years ago how old she was. It was a surprise to me even then. Didn't hear of her being sick. Shame. I also hated her political views but thats life. Also loved her for Star Trek first then Cheers. She was damn beautiful as Saavik and I had a crush on her and those eyes. RIP

Well as long as we are sharing our opinions: I never liked her that much at all.
She made a horrible starfleet officer, IMO.
And her Cheers role was (also IMO) mostly obnoxious and/or just tiresome.
And then later, although my opinion was already formed, her personal views sealed the deal.

But I wish her loved ones peace in the days ahead.
Too young.
And yeah, cancer can just fuck off.

Aviation pioneer, Air Force veteran Joe Kittinger dead at 94

Aviation pioneer and retired Air Force hero Joe Kittinger has died at the age of 94.

Kittinger, who was born in Tampa in 1928 and raised in Orlando, set a record for the longest skydive in 1960 when he jumped from a hot-air balloon at a height greater than 19 miles as a U.S. Air Force captain involved in Project Excelsior. He ended up on the cover of Life magazine.

His participation in Project ManHigh and Project Excelsior tested the ability of a pilot to survive an ejection from high-flying aircraft, key to the United States’ first manned spaceflight efforts. In all, he made five high-altitude jumps.

He also was the first man to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a helium balloon.

I do believe it was a helium balloon, not a hot-air one. He spent much of his life in Orlando and very popular here.

He was a master of dialogue and wrote excellent scripts for Doctor Who (including the wonderful "Robots of Death"), Blake's 7 and Star Cops. A huge loss.

Twitch dead by suicide at 40. I'm guessing a lot of people won't know who he is, but years back we used to watch So You Think You Can Dance as well there wasn't anything else on in the summer. He was a standout and a super interesting person. Apparently he was on the Ellen show which I've never watched.

Well thats out of the blue for reals. Ive only seen him on the Ellen show and in clips but he seemed so bright and fun loving and happy. No idea about his personal life and story as I see now. Sad that he felt something was so wrong or bad that he couldn't deal with it in the here and now. He was a bright spot on her show. RIP

Terry Hall, the lead singer of the Specials and a former member of Fun Boy Three and the Colourfield, has died aged 63, his bandmates in the Specials have confirmed.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of Terry, our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced,” the band tweeted.

Was a fan too. Brings me back to my college days (80s; my roommate in the dorm used to play their first album regularly), although I never saw them live.

A Message to You Rudy was a pretty faithful cover of a sixties pre-reggae era hit (for Dandy Livingston). So not written by the Specials (although their cover is awesome).

Bonus trivia! A totally different version (compared to The Go-Gos) of Our Lips Are Sealed was also released in the 80s by Fun Boy Three (fronted by Terry Hall, who co-wrote the song). In the UK, it was a much bigger hit than The Go-Gos version.

RIP Pele...82 years young. He's what got me started playing soccer as a kid, and why I'm a soccer coach now. One of the original greats. Even did a good job acting in Victory, the Stallone movie.

There are no protocols with mass threads (which I generally dislike anyway), for them or against them. For this particular thread, it has been stated since early on: If someone feels like someone needs a separate thread, they're right. And if they post in here, they're right.

Wow, I honestly thought Baba Wawa had passed away a few years ago. RIP to a woman who held her own against the old boy network of journalists.

As for Pele, he was one of the greats. I can’t remember the number of times I landed on my ass trying for a bicycle kick when I was younger.

Barbara was always older than I thought she was. Sad she is finally away from this Earth. But each of us in time will pass on. RIP to her and thoughts and comfort to her friends and family. 93 is a great run with a sound mind. Still never long enough I suppose. 200...300. When the end comes its still too soon.

She was a trailblazer for women and one of the great interviewers. Wife told me Walters announced that she had Alzheimer's a few years ago, so maybe death was a welcome release.
