Last night actually woke me up crying. God I dont need these. Im starting to stay up a little longer each night I think without thinking about it.

Re: Random randomness
Out my back door I kept hearing what sounded like maybe a dog that was stuck and would whine or yelp. So I went out to look and a giant shadow passed over my head . I jerked my head up to see a bald eagle fly over me about tree height. Was amazing. It was so BIG. Ive seen them online and in videos so much I was surprised how large it was. Wow. It made a big circle across the road then came back to my property. When I got around back though it must have kept going up the hill or over it. I cant see it now.
Not sure why its here as there no water to fish in but there are tall bare trees. And then my giant dead one too. Ill try to get a pic if it comes back. So big and beautiful. First time Ive ever seen one in person.

They are also carrion eaters. Indeed, they'll probably eat just about anything, including little dogs.

Yep. Ive always been cautious when I take my little dog outside for anything. But today and for a good while Ill be super duper hyper more safe with him. I had to go to town to buy some milk and hated to do it. had visions of the eagle getting in to him. Ill hold him close to go to the mailbox with me but my sister says they can still grab them. Maybe he will stay in a few days. But its beautiful out today and the rest of the week is rain. Hate to do it..would hate to lose him more.

We have Great Horned owls here, amongst other birds of prey and they are big enough to snatch cats. Indeed, in the 27 years I've live here I've seen them on two occasions grab a cat and fly away with them.
I used to have a owl dummy outside to keep our pups from getting snatched. First it was attacked by some really pissed bluebirds. And the later on by a falcon who did him in. Also saw a falcon chase off a hawk too.
Also seen the falcons chasing off a bunch of buzzards too.

I found a dead rabbit at the mailbox when I got the mail. I dont know if a car hit it and thats what the eagle wanted or if the eagle dropped it. I removed and buried it. Now theres 2 big ass buzzards up there circling.

Re: Random randomness
Well I finally got around to cleaning off the top of one of the cedar chests to look inside. I thought Id find my wife's vhs where she had all her childhood 8mm transferred to. But nope. Really thought it was in there. All I found was a chest of stuffed animals lol. One my mom gave me when I was like 14 and I had giving to my wife at least 25 years ago.
Now Im down to 3 places that vhs might be. I want to get it and the vhs of her parents 50th wedding anniversary transferred to dvd and usb. Which in itself is almost impossible now days as camera shops that did it are long dead and gone. Im left with Walmart of all places.
Also I need to clean everything from the piano. The floor is a lot worse and when it goes it will take a lot of stuff with it along with the piano and I cant get under the house to get them back.

Keep in mind, online services like iMemories.com, ScanMyPhotos.com, and LegacyBox.com often provide superior, more affordable options for VHS and/or photos to digital conversion than Walmart, and are far from dead and gone.

On birds:
We have lots of hawks in Philadelphia, and several times I've seen one swoop down and snatch a smaller bird who was looking for bugs in the grass.
Yesterday I saw a gang of four or five large crows yelling and chasing a hawk until it left the neighborhood. I guess birds have turf.

In my locale, I often see Cooper's Hawks taking out starlings and even ducks, typically with a spectacular explosion of feathers. Suffice to say, when you see 'em devouring and tearing into their prey, it makes you glad to realise pterosaurs and dinosaurs shrank down and evolved into birds.

I'm guessing that this was meant for here rather than the Burger King thread, so I'll just paste it on over...
Over the years I've rehabbed (or caught and passed on to a professional) a lot of different birds, but magpies (and other corvids - I've taken care of crows, too) are absolutely unique.
I rescued a black-billed magpie about 25 years ago, and we had him with us for several months before he was ready for release. Hamlet was... a lot like the birds in the video. And they're incredibly smart. When we moved out of that house in 2000, we found all of the places he'd stashed bits of raw meat for a rainy day - mostly between my books.

Our local tribe of crows hangs out in our tall chestnut tree and on our roof and several houses around.
I've heard that it's possible to befriend crows so that they see you as an ally. I should look into strategies for offering them food that the squirrels won't get first. (Crows are interesting, but squirrels are dumb assholes.)

Re: Random randomness
a friend of mine has taken on this project over the past few years. if you're open to experimentation and even more open to unintended consequences, it can be fascinating. leaving buried tinsel in the ground lead to crows dropping off chip wrappers in return. feeding times led to a few tapping on her HVAC exchange grill with their beaks in the morning in order to wake her up - she says they eventually 'came to an understanding' and stopped it. most of the presents they leave in her garden are bits of glass, with 'half a seashell' being the best thing they've left. another person i read about attempted to befriend a crow, and that crow brought friends. many friends. who would gather on her fence and stare intently at her whenever she left the house in the morning, waiting for food.

Re: Random randomness
Growing up in southern California I used to see tons of motorcycle cops (MC).
I moved down to the South in 1977. Since I have lived here I don't think I've seen a half dozen MC.
Do you all see MC fairly frequently or are thy sparse in your area too?
Right now I'm wondering if it's a sign of times or a thing in the South? Or is it just some kind of weird lack of sightings on my part?

My town has at least a couple of motorcycles, and I see them routinely when the weather's nice. Not sure how much routine patrolling they do but they're always at parades, festivals, funeral escorts, etc.

I know the city police here in Ottawa have a motorcycle unit that handles things like VIP escorts and associated activity like traffic management along a route. I don't know if they are used for more general purpose duties, though.

I mainly see cycle cops in two areas. 1) managing events of all sizes and 2) on park roads.
I don't know why the parks, maybe because traffic jams are ubiquitous? Only they aren't that I've seen.

Here in Philly and the surrounding areas the police and troopers drive up-armored SUVS. I've seen the occasional motorcycle cop, but all of the larger vehicles have dash-mounted scanners and computers that you can't really carry on two wheels, and they all haul tons of gear in the back.
This week the city hosted the funeral for a Temple University police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty. The police presence was enormous, and I saw cars from not only every surrounding municipality but every mid-Atlantic state. The kilt-wearing fife and drum corps (assembled in the lobby of my workplace) were from all over, even as far away as Texas and beyond.

60 seconds + 60 seconds = 120 seconds, or 2 minutes.
1:20 = 80 seconds, or 1 minute and 20 seconds.

Microwave instructions always seem to be off for my microwave, so I always cooks at 70% for longer than asked. Typical frozen OMG I must eat something sandwich is 90 secs, flipping halfway through. I tend to cook for two minutes at 70% instead. If I have enough foresight to know OMG I must eat something is coming, I'll let a sandwich thaw and cook it for 90 seconds at 70%. That is almost always the perfect nuke, no matter what kind so frozen sandwich it was. Burrito, croissant, burger, biscuit, whatever.

Re: Random randomness
Often, flipping is flipping, rather than turning . The thing I cook most often is breakfast sandwich on the go. I wrap it in a paper towel, put it in upside down for 45 seconds, flip it right side up, and then nuke it again for 45 seconds. Unless it's thawed. Then I don't need to flip it at 70%. I don't see turning, but then I mostly have nuked sandwiches and not meals and on the very rare occasion I get a nuke it meal, I cook it in a toaster over, even when it says not to.
