Re: The Trump Investigation(s) Thread
IIRC you have the right to a jury if you want it but don't have a corresponding right to a bench trial if you want that. That is, if DOJ pushes for a jury trial and Trump pushes for a bench trial, you could still wind up with a jury trial. Though presumably the court would be making the decision on that if there's a dispute.

Re: The Trump Investigation(s) Thread
I thought the decision to file in FL was based on the assumption that, had they filed in D.C., Trump's team would have strung things out as long as possible before asking for a change of venue to FL. Since most of the crimes occurred at Mar-a-Lago, this would probably have been granted.El Guapo wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 5:06 pm But...this is sure making it look like filing in S.D. So it was about avoiding delay of the actual trial.

If he manages to outsmart his secret service detail (or heaven forbid they assist him), we have bigger problems. I also need to believe that's the reason he's not in custody now - because he has 24/7 surveillance.

I missed this last night:

A plea deal. For mishandling classified information? Is that even a thing?Donald Trump vowed Saturday to continue running for president even if he were to be convicted as part of the 37-count federal felony indictment that was issued against him this week.
“I’ll never leave,” Trump said in an interview aboard his plane. “Look, if I would have left, I would have left prior to the original race in 2016. That was a rough one. In theory that was not doable.”
...
Trump predicted he would not be convicted and said he did not anticipate taking a plea deal, though he left open the possibility of doing so “where they pay me some damages.”

You’re kidding, right? The best possible thing that could happen would be for him to leave. I’d fucking chip in to buy him a one-way ticket.Isgrimnur wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 5:53 pm Take his passport(s) and forbid him from leaving the state.
Again, he’s the biggest danger to this country right now. He needs to be gone. Any way that happens . . . Ok with me.
[Edit to make clear: Not ANY way. I don’t want him assassinated. If anything could potentially be worse than another Trump term in office, it would be that.]

Dammit, you beat me to it. Not about the grift part, just that it's an option that would not surprise me (if his lawyers can actually convince him that he IS going to jail for at least some period of time).Jaymann wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 10:20 pm I could see him fleeing to Russia and trying to pull some "president in exile" BS. Seems to be going around these days! And I also think that would be MUCH preferable to trial, death anytime soon, by any means, including diabetes, or really anything that could stir up things domestically. Hell, try to run for President from there! Trumpski/Snowden 24! Trump/Assange? Would LOVE to see his ass flee the country.

Re: The Trump Investigation(s) Thread
Apparently Trump has posted a message to Truth summoning his horde to the courthouse in Miami tomorrow. Hopefully the 1/6 trials (and the short notice) will keep that threat at bay.
Additionally, widespread social media threats have led Federal law enforcement to tighten security in advance of the hearing tomorrow.

Additionally, widespread social media threats have led Federal law enforcement to tighten security in advance of the hearing tomorrow.
Washington Post
Federal and local authorities on Sunday amped up security preparations ahead of Donald Trump’s first appearance in federal court on criminal charges here, monitoring online threats and potential gatherings of far-right extremists while marshaling more police officers to be on duty.
Escalating violent rhetoric in online forums, coupled with defiant statements from the former president and his political allies, have put law enforcement officials on alert for potential disruptions ahead of Trump’s court appearance. He is facing a 37-count federal indictment, 31 of which allege he willfully kept classified documents in his possession after leaving the White House.
Authorities were monitoring plans for pro-Trump rallies in Miami, including one outside the federal courthouse on Tuesday purportedly organized by a local chapter of the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group, some leaders of which were found guilty of seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

37 has been the Clerks number since I saw the movie for the first time in the theatre. I hardly ever see movies in an art theatre. I saw Clerks three times and kept having to drag others. I can't imagine a time where I see or hear 37 and not think (or say) 37? as part of a call response. (I worked at a 7 Eleven at the time, so the movie really struck a chord)
Pretty much been my thought since 2017.Kurth wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 9:34 pm [Edit to make clear: Not ANY way. I don’t want him assassinated. If anything could potentially be worse than another Trump term in office, it would be that.]

Re: The Trump Investigation(s) Thread
A strategy emerges...
NBC News: Trump's arraignment can't go forward unless he finds local counsel — and it's unclear whether he has.
At least one prominent Miami-based defense attorney has turned down Trump.
If Trump doesn't find local counsel, the surrender and first appearance will still happen, but the arraignment may have to be postponed.

I think this is less of a strategy and more that nobody wants to sully their reputation on that asshat. And they would like to get paid.
Capitalism tries for a delicate balance: It attempts to work things out so that everyone gets just enough stuff to keep them from getting violent and trying to take other people’s stuff.

Re: The Trump Investigation(s) Thread
President Trump assures me this is all a sham witch hunt with fake evidence that won’t stand up in court. And that he’s so successful and winning and famous. So attorneys must be lining up to represent him to participate in the rewards of winning for a famous client willing to pay for their time winning his acquittal.
…or maybe all those lawyers know Trump is full of lies, false promises, has a losing case, and won’t pay even if they could win. Even the Unabomber could find a lawyer willing to defend an indefensibly guilty client.

This. The harm he can do to the country doesn't stop in the event that he doesn't/can't run for president. It's his vitriol that needs to be stopped, and that doesn't happen just because he crosses a border.Jaymann wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 10:20 pm I could see him fleeing to Russia and trying to pull some "president in exile" BS. This guy is really arguing that it would be a good thing for Trump to be the GOP nominee?
Am I misunderstanding this? He actually thinks it would be better for the nation for Trump to be the GOP nominee for president because he’ll be easier for Biden to defeat? He’s hoping that the pending indictments don’t knock Trump out of the race because “Democrats should be worried” if Biden has to run against someone other than Trump?
So fucking myopic.
