See, now normally, I don't like to click something that then hands me an executable to run on my pc.

Thanks for that, interesting tool for those of us who are tech illiterate.jztemple2 wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 1:55 pmHow did I not know about this website?I get mightily confused with all the GPU and CPU levels nowadays, this just makes it so much simpler.
The only games it says I can't run at the recommended at Immortals of Aveum (don't care), Saints Row 2022 (hmm), Forza Motorsportand Cities: Skylines 2

Says I'm not good on Starfield for recommended. But it also says I can't run Baldur's Gate 3 at recommended, and it's been doing just fine.

Factoring in the resolution is certainly a fair point, and is something I overlooked. I'm content with my 1080P display, so I still get a lot of performance from my old RTX 2080-S.

Not only a fair point, definitely one of the biggest factors determining whether you can run something or not.Max Peck wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 2:28 pm Factoring in the resolution is certainly a fair point, and is something I overlooked.
Massive difference in h/w requirements to run 1080p vs 4K (well). Not to mention refresh rates.

Re: Bethesda's Starfield
I've been using System Requirements Lab for years. It's a solid tool (but see below.)
In other words, even their tool gets confused with the absurd, opaque naming conventions that CPUs use now.
Remember when we just had to have '500Mhz or higher', and you could just check whether your speed was higher or lower than that? Now? i3, i5, i7, i9, some of each of which are sometimes faster than some of each of the others, and numbering systems that are actually codes, not versions/speeds (for Intel, the beginning of the number is the generation, the rest is the order in which the versions were created, so an i7 17800 could be slower than an i5 17200.) And that's before figuring in the letter affixes, and that's just Intel. I usually end up using Userbenchmark if I need to compare things.
Intel recently announced that they're changing the convention. Yay, thought I - a meaningful naming system. Nope. They're dropping the 'i' and leaving the rest the same. Retroactively. Because.
Compare that to, say, Nvidia, where the first number is the generation, and the xx60 is always slower than the xx70 which is always slower than the xx80 (and the XX60 is usually comparable to the xx80 from the previous generation.) It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot simpler than Intel's nonsense.
It says that I can run Starfield on recommended with no problem. It also says that my CPU is below the recommended on BG3 - even though mine is ~23% faster than the recommended.Skinypupy wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 2:28 pm Says I'm not good on Starfield for recommended. My issues are with the CPU and GPU, but the recommended ones are VERY similar to the ones I have. We are talked within 5% benchmarks.

So unless Nvidia's official drivers that came out earlier this month are out of date, I don't think that's accurate.

Re: Bethesda's Starfield
I call BS on the CPU ratings. In a different thread, I think I asked about my 5 year old (?) i5 8400, then went WAY down a rabbit hole, looking at GAMING comparisons (and to be fair, only at the 1440p res I game at, which did make a difference IIRC), and the current CPU's offered VERY little boost to FPS (so little as you wouldn't notice while gaming) in comparison. I was frankly shocked, because I was ready to plunk down for a new mobo, CPU, memory. But when I looked at the very minimal, and no perceptible difference a newer CPU made for games, I decided to wait.
The very big, massived differences in the CPU's performance were in pretty much everything BUT gaming, interestingly. I assume that the devs and/or hardware manufacturers offload almost everything to the GPU these days. I do remember quite a few years ago that you could have a CPU bottleneck for gaming (if you have a brand new GPU but older CPU), but I guess that's less of an issue now. Or maybe it's just that mine is not quite old enough to hit that threshold. But again, my CPU came out in 2017, so....

Forgot to take a screenshot but my passed minimum and failed video card due to drivers.
Updated drivers, refreshed and it still failed video card.
Recommend is RTX 2080 I have an RTX 3080 laptop gpu. I know it's not the same as a desktop one but it should still be equal to or better than a 3080 I'd think.

. For the PC, keyboard & mouse or controller? I played Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vega on the console with a controller and used a controller for Fallout 4 on the PC, just out of habit. However, recently I've started using the k+m for action games like this. What are folk's preferences?

Yeah, depends on planetside or ship combat. K+M planetside, because that's how FPS should be played, goddamnit. Joystick + hotas or controller for space, depending on what's supported.Daehawk wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 11:56 pm Its probably very playable with m/kb. But Id prob use a joystick and kb

Mouse+keyboard and this baby for flying:

I also have a Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One joystick on standby, if needed. Or if I decide to just live in Starfield, I could dust off my old Saitek X.55 Rhino, but clearing space to get that set up is a big commitment.

If it's got a gun and a crosshair, keyboard and mouse. Every time. A controller can't even come close when it comes to K&M accuracy and speed. For vehicles, it depends on the game. For some games (say, GTA), I keep a wireless controller on a stand right behind my keyboard, and simply pick it up when I get in a vehicle, then set it down when I go back on foot. But for other games, especially those with complex vehicle controls (which I doubt Starfield has) or precision combat, I'll stick with the mouse.jztemple2 wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 11:39 pm So let's discuss the next topic to keep us busy before release. Thanks to pic above. I just now noticed it's actually labeled for Starfield controls.
I had no interest when I just thought it was a Starfield themed controller bit now I'm interested a bit, but hesitant at $80 not to mention plenty of places have it either sold out or much higher.
As for controls for me in general it's gonna be kb&m.
Space will depend on how that feels.
I have a couple of hotas but no room but also a couple of all in ones.

I failed Minimum requirements on the basis of my video card, but just barely.
I suspect this won't be a problem. I generally turn down certain video settings anyway (esp stuff like shadows and bloom).

Now that I own Starfield premi, I'm more antsy to play.
Good news. I just realized this is playable Thursday night instead of Friday.
Bad news. I just found out that Monday is labor day. If I was wirking this would be great but I'm not so that doesn't matter. What does matter is that my wife is off so i can play Thursday and Friday and that's probably it. Not gonna be able to play much for the 3 day weekend now.
Oh well.
