Did my first Expert lockpicking... Had to restart once because I couldn't read my own handwriting . Second time I used logic, patience and a couple of guesses. Took about an hour total . And what was in there wasn't all that great, but it's the challenge I guess

So if you were lone wolfing it…. what would you do when you run against the parts where you need NPC to help if you have zero crew?
Uh, just go get a companion to help you out for that mission?

Does anyone know if there is a single place to buy every resource I might need for reseach, outpost building, and crafting?
Basically looking for space Walmart.

Jemison Mercantile in the spaceport in New Atlantis has a lot of the stuff. Other stuff you might have to look around for.

Several guides say that the vendors restock every 24-48 hours in-game time (depending on the vendor/planet), so if they don't have something you need then you can try waiting/sleeping to advance the time and trigger them to restock goods and reset their credits.

I had a DEA agent (a clandestine lab enforcement specialist who was training us) tell a story about pretty much that exact thing happening when a fairly small meth lab went boom.

Which may be a no brainer to someone that understands what it takes to get a companion, but I don't know what's involved - so I wouldn't know if that was such a clear solution. The answer could also have just been, there will be an NPC nearby that could step in and help you turn the other key.

And you can cut the time waiting by using a trick from this article (in spoiler tags, but it's a minor spoiler)
And it's incredibly cool that this unique facet of Venus made its way into Starfield.
Give this a shot. Fly to Venus, get out of your cockpit seat, and take a seat somewhere else in your ship. (Yes, it is irritating that you can't wait while sitting in the pilot's seat.) Press B and choose to wait for one hour. You'll see that one hour in local Venus time translates to 100 hours in Universal Time. Sleep for 24 hours on Venus, and 2400 hours will pass for the rest of the galaxy. That's 100 days! Quite a long nap.
I was selling stuff to the vending kiosk on Jemison, and quickly exhausted the 5,000 credit limit on the machine. Typically I'd have to run to another vendor or wait sit in a chair for 24 to 48 hours for the credits to resupply so I could sell more junk. Instead, I fast-traveled to Venus and sat down in a chair in my ship for an hour. That single hour on Venus translates to 100 hours of Universal time. I fast-traveled back to Jemison, and the kiosk's credits were refreshed. Thanks, Venus!

Anytime you're on a planet or moon and you hear another ship landing (it happens a lot), look for it and if you find it you can steal it. At this point I'm 20 hours in and have 4 ships. None of which I've stolen, but there have been plenty I could have stolen if I wanted to.
I did final see a ship landing while I was wandering around (on Venus!) and I ran over to it. I went on board and found the smuggler captain. I had barely said hello when he told me I was late for the package pickup . I said sorry and took the package away with me. It was a legendary pistol . Unfortunately I wasn't really good enough for me to use so later on I sold it for a pretty credit.

I don’t get the “wait on Venus” thing. It just seems a lot easier to wait either 24 or 48 hours, than to fast travel back and forth to Venus and wait just a couple of hours since the “hours” are real time anyway. What am I missing?

I'm going to have to break down and look at some guides, because I don't really have the patience to figure out stuff without a tutorial. Like survey planet missions, basics of the ship. Hell, I even had to look up how to switch weapons. Kind of unforgivable the lack of basic tutorials for such an ambitious game.
That being said, this one has its hooks in me hard. I'm actually a bit surprised since I'm A) not typically a HUGE Bethesda fan (I think the only 2 games I've ever finished from them are Fallout 4 and Morrowind), and B) I'm not typically a huge sci-fi fan either. But I'm super immersed in this game and the world. Maybe the game had some fortuitous timing coming at the same time I'm going through a Star Trek phase.

I just commandeered a ship belonging to the Eclipes (or something like that). Anyway, they shot first! Now, I see through the interwebs that it is possible to sell the ship, but it has to be registered first. I guess I can just leave it on the moon and just take the keys with me.
You've probably already figured it out, but registering a ship I obtained was about 80% of the sell value. I wonder if I could have made more by going into the builder and selling off all of the components first.
Two things that I just discovered that other people may also have missed (I mean, like so many things - we have to stumble on a lot of knowledge)
(keyboard commands)
First is small: You can click and briefly hold "E" on a lot of items (not just the things you can put into your inventory). You can rotate it with LMB/RMB, and you drop it with a 2nd "E" press. You can Throw the object by pressing "R".
Second was a big find: When you are using your cutter to collect resources like Ag/Fe/Pb... if you press the Right Mouse Button - you will see 3 little lines on the HUD move into the center point where you are aiming - and it is making your cutter more powerful, charging it up. You will mine through the resource rock in a fraction of the time.

Just hacked my first expert lock. Not too bad since I'm now at tier 2 of the skill.
Master locks actually take some forethought. It's... interesting.
I think this lockpicking mechanic is pretty well done.
Agreed. I definitely prefer the thinking approach over the dexterity one, even if it takes a little longer.
I was doing a big, long fight inside of an asteroid that was being mined and as I go down a passage there is a side door. Only it's locked and has a Master level . I've already found on past missions that sometimes the rewards don't make up for the time to solve a Master lock. So I passed on that and another one there in the complex. I'm being able to solve them on one go, but damn it takes a lot of time. If I ever find the place again I might give it a second look.

Another one of those "tips" videos, this one had some clever info on scanning on a planet's surface... don't use your scanner . Pick plants, kill animals and collect minerals and they will be scanned and you get resources to boot.

I've done a lot of master locks and yes they take a bit more time and forethought, but I mean like maybe 90 seconds rather than 45 seconds. I'm definitely timing myself on the next one, just out off curiosity.
On an unrelated note, I have completed all of the story/mission based achievements. I am now trying to decide if I want to get all of the achievements. I think I'll keep at it until another game catches my interest, but level 100 is going to take a while. At 69.7 hours in I am level 47, not that I have been pushing for levels or anything. I am not even sure the best way to level quickly. Probably serial murder at high level planets.
Oh an I learned another way around the adhesive problem...you can set up a greenhouse and grow your own assuming you can find a plant that gives it as a resource.

What the...???? I'm taking maybe ten, fifteen minutes to do a master lock since I use paper to figure out which picks do what. I must be missing something about the process. I'll do some research.

Every time I start to love this game it does something to piss me off.
I have a mission at the Deimo Staryard and I can't figure out how the holy #@(*$&#(* to dock at the @)(*#)@* thing.
Everything online says fly to it, turn on scanner, and when you get close enough you'll get the option to dock. I've flown over it, under it, and all around it 20 times and I'm not getting any option to dock.

I've done several more master locks now, and many lower difficulty ones. I haven't been using notes or anything, I just pay attention to which picks that will work on the current layer will also work on inner layers -- when you select a pick, all layers that can use it will turn blue, not just the current layer. I'm usually able to solve them in a few minutes (not that I've timed them) and rarely need to back up or abort and start over again.

IIRC, you turn on the scanner (hit F on PC), lock on to the target (hit E while aimed at the target), at which point you usually have an option to hail the target (hold E) and when you get within 500m you will have the option to dock with it (hold R).

Thanks, I was playing with a controller but that helped me figure it out. Had to hit A when hovering over the target in scanner mode, then I got the Hail and Dock options.
It's been tough playing a moral xenobiologist who just wants to explore for the greater good. So many situations in which you're pressured into doing illegal and shady things. I've gone along with some of them reluctantly, but I have a feeling my naive United Colonies academic might be a grizzled cutthroat by the end of this thing.
I've just gotten a Star Eagle which is all great and stuff, but where's the panel that allows me to interact with the cargo hold? Sheesh, I've been looking everywhere but not luck
Never mind, I finally found it . Apparently I'm getting old. "Sure are a lot of lights and switches up here"

Well, I don't like the Star Eagle's piloting position, the front window is rather narrow vertically
I made a mistake this afternoon. I was getting a bit burned out on the Ranger faction campaign but felt I was getting close to the final mission and so I spent three hours going from one big shootout to the next. That really burned me out, but at least I have the Star Eagle and now I can start messing around doing other stuff. I still have Sam Coe leeched onto me and he keeps nagging me about some bank vault which I had completely forgotten about . OK Sam, we'll get to it sometime...

So, do achievements get disabled if you simply fat-finger your way into hitting the tilde key when trying to switch to weapon #1 in the middle of combat, or do you need to actually use a console command to get flagged as a cheater for the current playthrough? Asking for a friend of Sarah...

Anyone have problem with audio with the PC version? My USB speakers keep turning off. I thought it was broken but it was only when playing Starfield so it was something that is caused by Starfield.

I can answer that as I did it several times early on. I hit the tilde key and hit it again to back out of the console and later got an achievement, so just hitting the console key doesn't disable achievements.
Farther back in the thread I had posted about having to use a cheat to get through a bugged mission. There was a reply about a mod that will remove the tag disabling achievements from saved games so there's that as well.
I finally had one of the those situations where a ship landed near me. I hoofed over there and it turns out it was some pirates attacking a small relay station. I used an energy weapon and killed off all the pirates while they were concentrating on the station personnel . Their ship was locked but it was only an advanced lock and I got past that and picked up another ship for myself .
When I went back into orbit I got a hail from a passing tour ship. Their cruise director had some tourists who wanted to ask me some questions. The whole situation was humorous and a nice change from the more dangerous activities and I got 3800 credits for my trouble

Question, I had a ship damaged in a space battle. I used my ship parts to repair the shields, but several other areas still have red bars. I went to the ship technician at a spaceport but he says there's nothing he needs to fix. The red bars have slowly gone away, but I still have one hanging in there:
So am I supposed to do anything about this? Or will it just fix itself on its own?
