Wat? How old are you?!?
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

Old enough to have dealt with the repercussions of legacy hardware from the days before engineers settled on standard byte/word sizes.

World internet speeds

Spectrum rolled out a frequency shift, the vendor botched some of it, and my surge protector didn’t like the new frequency band, so was severely limiting throughput.

Problem resolved for now.

Both my car ins and internet jumped up this month. Not huge but every little bit adds up for me. It went up nearly $20. I called but theres no promotions for me. So I told them to drop my speed from 600 to 300 and save $10. Bah. They said check back there might be a deal next month ya never know. In fact its usually raise my speed back up and save more than this lol. Stupid system.

I lucked out tonight. Im really drunk. Im slurring my words even. But I call Charter Spectrum not hoping for much. Talk to one girl in billing who trans me over to god knows where,,,and I meet a beer guy. Lol. He brews his own even. he suggests Bison beer by Longcreek.....which I will try. He give me a discount which lowers my price to $19 frickin dollars wooo...but I apply speed to my pipe....500 down...half a gig ....$34 a month..I take it for 12 months and leave. I am happy..... an d dizzy.

Just like that..phone call and lowered my bill by $20 an raised my speed by 200 megabytes per second.

I live in the country and have done every type of internet, and was even on the waiting list for Elon's Satalite service. Then 5G came into the area, and I was getting fairly good speeds. However, a few weeks ago I get a call that they ran Fiber past my house, and would I like to switch?

So I laugh, and say, are you sure you can hook my house up, it happens all the time that they somehow get it wrong. But nope, Fiber is here, so I am getting almost 1 TB down, and 750 MB up. Price is higher, but the speeds are the best I have ever had. So very happy. :)

Um, I am assuming GB down as opposed to the 1000 times faster TB down.

I'm going to push even further and suggest it's Gb vs the 8x faster GB. Xfinity has 6Gb but as far as I am aware, nobody offers GB for home internet in the US.

Got an automated voicemail from Spectrum internet saying Ive just lost my 40% discount I was getting and to call them back at the caller id number. This isn't a scam call btw its actually charter spectrum trying to hook you into a new deal. He said I could get what I get now for a flat rat of $30 a month for 36 months.

BUT......I have to pay the full $300+something up front and wont be billed for those 36 months. That sure sounds like a contract to me...actually sounds like the old cell phone contracts from the late 90s early 2000s. I dont have that kinda cash to do that shit. Fucking companies just give me the deal or a better deal than even that and let me pay monthly. wtf.

Its 2 weeks until check and I gotta make whats in my cabinets last until then. Got nothing left in bank or cc.

Just to be clear - how did you confirm this?

If you ever receive any messages like that, do NOT contact the company at the number they provide. Find their number on their website, call it, and ask there.

Ok, stop. Stop.

It took me about 20 seconds to find that this is a known scam. Example. Another example.

Never, never contact a company back on something unsolicited with the number that they provide.

He is right. Here’s an idea: ANYTIME you get a phone call or email that involves money, run it past us first.

Also, if ANYONE tells you you have to pay for something with gift cards or crypto, it’s a scam. Just remember that.

Here's something to consider: scammers share successful "catches". Which means your information is now floating around as a potential mark. Basically for the foreseeable future you literally cannot trust a single phone call (and probably most emails) that ask for any financial information.

Also, read the r/Scams subreddit for the sheer variety of possible scams out there. Some are obvious but many are quite sophisticated and insidious.

This is a good point. You might even consider trying to get your number and/or email account changed. If nothing else, make a new Gmail account (they're free) that you only use for financial matters. If you are contacted by any of those companies on your old email, you'll know something is off.

You talking about EPB? That's where my son works, tech support for the internet side.

He said $67.99/mo for 1gb fiber with no managed Wifi.

No im in Bradley near McDonald. im like 5 miles or less from the Hamilton co line where EPB is. EPB is the ones Ive talked about and wished I had for years on here.

Check these prices.....

EPB:

1 gig up and down $67

My own power compamy is laying fiber right now and will be available to me next year.

Cleveland Utilities:

400 meg up and down $59.99
1 gig up down $69.99
2.5 gig up down $99

And now my wonderful Charter Spectrum. Keep in mind Im on 500 meg and im grandfathered until next year...i should be paying like $100...this is prices I was just told by two workers at Spectrum...not their online pricing..its gone up.

100 meg down 10 meg up $29.99
300 meg down 15 meg up $69.99
500 meg down 20 meg up $107.00
1 gig down 25 meg up $154.00

F'n STOOOOPID. Ill switch to my power company next year after having used Charter since 1995. I cancelled tv in 2019 or 2020 due to pricing .my wife had cancelled it off and on before me.

There's literally nothing that you need 1gig internet for. Or 500mb, for that matter. If the $29.99 price is available to you (and not just for new subscribers), you should be changing your plan to 100mbps and saving money.

I have 500mbps internet plan (originally signed up for 400 and Xfinity "generously" upped the speed for everyone). I work from home. My work laptop currently gets about 20-25mpbs on average, because it's getting wifi off an old TP-Link extender plus has a VPN running. I can stream movies or YouTube on it WHILE working, with no adverse effects on speed for either one.

When I have my gaming laptop in the same room, it's using the same wi-fi extender minus the VPN. It manages to get about 75-80mbps, and I barely even notice it versus when I move it to the family room next to the wifi router so it can use the full wifi speed. The only time it makes a difference is when downloading a whole game or a game patch, and I can wait an extra hour.

I'm getting several times the speed I really need, but there is nothing slower that Comcast offers that doesn't drop the upload so low that it's practically useless ( and yes, I use the upload speed.) I have to pay for 900 down in order to get bumped to 20 up. Yeah, really.

Sometimes folks ask why anyone needs Gigabit internet service... STALKER 2, 144 GB. That's ~20 minutes at Gb speeds. That would be close to 2 hours at 200Mbps. How can people live like this?!

We got a ridiculously good deal from Spectrum. When we were first scheduled to move into our new house I called Spectrum to set up their standard introductory offer for 500 Mbps service, which I believe was $80/mo. When I found out that the sellers wouldn't vacate on time I canceled Spectrum (and all other utilities) a few hours later. That put me in a special retention offer bucket, so when I signed up again a week later they offered the same 500 Mbps package for just $37/mo, guaranteed for two years. After that it will jump to whatever their standard rate is, something north of $100. Now I've been trained to cancel and get another sweetheart deal.

The service has been rock solid, and 500 Mbps is plenty fast for our needs.
