Re: Random randomness
Dumb Question Time:
Years ago when I went to college I had a credit card account with my dad as a co-signer on the account. I remember when I went to school in the dark ages there were a million credit card applications on campus at the beginning of the term but that doesn't seem to be a thing anymore. My kid is off at college now and I wanted to get a similar card for her but wasn't able to find one - they all bounced since she has no credit history or income. She's got a bank account with a debt card but I'd really prefer she use a credit card for day-to-day purchases. She already received a scam email that looked like it was from the university and led to a page where she dutifully provided her debt card details (she's currently waiting for a replacement card to be mailed so she doesn't have access to her money until it arrives).
Any suggestions for a bank I can get a credit card for her? Interest rates don't matter since I'll pay it off every month but I don't want to pay any annual fees.
Other than the card incident she's doing great off on her own and I'm so proud of her I could burst.

Re: Random randomness
Have you tried something like NerdWallet with their specific recommendations for student cards? They are supposed to be designed for people with no credit history.
If that doesn't pan out, you can add her as an authorized user on one of your cards, since that will allow her to buid credit history.

Consumers under the age of 21 must prove that they have an independent income or get a co-signer before applying for a credit card. The Act also prevents credit card companies from mailing offers to consumers under 21 unless they "opt in," and prohibits companies from wooing students with T-shirts, free pizza and other free gifts at university-sponsored events.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: Random randomness
Make her an authorized user on one of your cards that has a good history and isn't loaded. Activate the card, but do not give her the authorized user card when it arrives. Putting her on your card will greatly improve her credit score, and then she'll be able to get a credit card of her own fairly soon. Only do this if you're sure she can handle having a credit card. You might want to make sure the card she gets on her own doesn't have too high a limit, because your good credit score which she will share, with no detriment to you whatsoever, will probably lead to them offer her cards with higher spending limits than you might want her to have.

Does it take that long to start reporting to one's credit report? I figured two or three months? He could give her the authorized user card temporarily, and then reclaim it when she can get her own card.

Now my bank is telling me that my adult son who is in university and has a bank account with them with thousands of dollars in it and access an education fund with more, can't have a credit card because he doesn't have a job (yet).
wtf.
Sure he could be an authorized user of my card but I want him to start building up his own credit rating.

I'm guessing that regulations came down hard at some point on predatory practices in the credit card industry. I remember reading numerous stories "back in the day" about college students getting roped into massive credit card debt because of all the push to get them.

Sounds like the path of least resistance is to just add her to one of my existing cards and get a card for her. It won't build her credit but will protect her bank account from fraud which is my main goal.

In the US, at least, being an authorized user will build his credit. On time and missed payments will be added to both credit reports - so don't do this if you might miss payments as it will hurt his credit too.GreenGoo wrote: Thu Oct 26, 2023 12:50 pm

I find that hard to believe, since the authorized user is not liable for the balance in any way here in Canada.stessier wrote: Thu Oct 26, 2023 1:16 pm In the US, at least, being an authorized user will build his credit. That's correct as long as he adds her to his personal card vs a business card. It's surprising how many people don't know about this way to help their children starting out in the real world. It will help them get a cheaper rate on auto insurance as well. You'd want to feel fairly certain that the individual you do it for is mature and responsible otherwise they could be digging themselves a hole they'd have to climb out of.stessier wrote: Thu Oct 26, 2023 1:16 pmIn the US, at least, being an authorized user will build his credit. The advantage to adding her to my card is I'll be able to review her purchases each month - but she's already had access to my CC in other ways (Steam, for example) without abusing it so I trust her.em2nought wrote: Thu Oct 26, 2023 3:26 pm You'd want to feel fairly certain that the individual you do it for is mature and responsible otherwise they could be digging themselves a hole they'd have to climb out of.
I graduated college with ~$20k in credit card debt so I'm well aware of the trap. (But no student loans. I'm sure most graduates would love to only be $20k in debt)

Yeah, but at least when I went to college, tuition started at < $1,296/year. by the time I graduated it had tripled, and is now $13,258/year. This does not include housing/dining (housing has only ~tripled since I was an undergrad - from around $300/month to share a room, to around $1k/month - and these appear to be the cheaper Westwood apartments)
And that's with the in-state resident subsidies for a public school in the UC.
so in order to get the things we (I had about the same in debt) got with our ~$20k of debt, it probably costs around $100k today.

I didn't mean you'd need to worry about her use of your card. What I was trying to say is that if you boost her credit score with your own it could be dangerous depending on how much credit some card company offers her eventually.Exodor wrote: Thu Oct 26, 2023 5:17 pmThe advantage to adding her to my card is I'll be able to review her purchases each month - but she's already had access to my CC in other ways (Steam, for example) without abusing it so I trust her.em2nought wrote: Thu Oct 26, 2023 3:26 pm You'd want to feel fairly certain that the individual you do it for is mature and responsible otherwise they could be digging themselves a hole they'd have to climb out of.

I've helped many business associates by adding them to some cards, but only one I regret because he just doesn't seem to care if he walks away from a debt. I thought he'd grown up, but no. It doesn't hurt me at all, but I don't like the fact that in essence I'd made him look like a good risk to creditors.

The credit providers signed on with the credit reporting companies. If the rules allow for the game to expose them to unnecessary risk, then that’s on them.

Im gonan leave typos in ,..I have to fix so many for some reason these days I spend half my time fixing typos.
It looks like I need some type of storage box or organizer. A lartge one. Before me they stored important papers and not so important un the couch cushions. Not a lrge amount and the cushions sat flush so you couldn't tell. things like house insuranse policies..like insurance...school papers...history stuff like. They did it and then me and Donna did it. And now I still do it.
But I seem to have a lot more stuff under there. The cushion sit awkwardly and such. But now the worst peoblem. I sit on the couch and over time it appears the papers have beeen sliding back and into the space between the back of the couch and the cushions. I can BARELY get my had in there painfully and theres LOTs back there. I need a solution. Im thinking a big walmart storage box for the unimportant non business stuff and some kind of bit organizer for the policies and such.
Anyone use one opr have an idea on one or type?
Look at those typos. I type like Ive had a mini stoke. Im thinking the words right in my head as far as I can tell and as i type I think Im typing right. Thehn look at what I typed and its horrible. Was bad before but latey its pure shit.

When I fell out of my sisters suv I remember hanging my foot. I remeber being on the ground in pain. I dont recall the fall at all. It was like its a blacked out mem.
I fell off a 6' cow gate a month after my wife died helping out a neighbor who locked her keys back in the house. I remember snagging my foot there as well and waking up on the ground. But again the fall is a complete blank.
Im not sure why 2 falls years apart are the same.

First answer: 1 run-of-the-mill file box, 1 trash bag. Between the two, you'll be set.
Second answer: Consider the possibility of concussions. They don't always have obvious head injuries, and the effects of multiple injuries of that sort can 'stack.' It's something to bring up with your doctor.

Ya my doc visit is 6 months past due. I never had time and then my car broke and now my dog is not well. One day Ill get back there.
Also anyone remember when YouTube videos were 10 or 30 seconds only? I thought that was a horrible idea. Then one day they raised it a little. Then more then one day said screw it mostly. Im still not sure why some are limited to time and other people post 3 and 4 hour ones.
But look how YT has evolved and became so great. Its an amazing site for so much in info and entertainment and socializing now. Really fun videos. Its had its bad moments and changes but overall I think its still a great site.

Re: Random randomness
Because the creators choose to make them that length. Some people watch YouTube like TV, looking for longer, more in-depth content. Others want short videos that they can watch while in the drive-thru, in the bathroom, or whatever (anything to feed the profitable short attention span that the internet has brought about.) YouTube has been pushing the shorter videos like crazy lately, so they tend to get a lot of hits, and creators tend to add them to their channel to draw in more viewers. Personally, I see the short videos as about as meaningful as funny cat pictures.Daehawk wrote: Fri Oct 27, 2023 7:19 pm Im still not sure why some are limited to time and other people post 3 and 4 hour ones.
It probably doesn't help that they can likely monetize the short videos more than the longer ones.

Finally replaced the ear cushions on my Superlux headphone (it's a clone of the big Sony MD studio monitor). The old ones have all the pleather broken apart so only the underlying vinyl's left. What a difference. This is the cooling gel cushions, and according to the maker, if I add a couple drops of water (pipper included) to each side and let them absorb into the cushion gel, it'll be ever cooler, LOL.

Almost forgot to order new checks for the new account. Only need one check every 3 months to pay my garbage man. I use Walmart Checks. Less than $10 gets me over 100 Star Wars or whatever checks. Last time it was Star Trek but they only had Star Wars in my liking this time.
Banks wanted $40 for the pleasure. Told them NO lol. Funny that Walmart can sell you checks for $10 but that flimsy piece of plastic they call a checkbook now days is almost $20. I passed on that. Ill use my default old one from my bank..blue with nothing on it. I cant even see all the sharpie I wrote on it saying FRONT!!! cause I always open it backwards.

Are fireworks on Halloween a thing now? I don't remember fireworks on Halloween being a thing. That or there is a lot of heavy gun play going on in multiple directions. Kinda makes me hope that fireworks on Halloween is a new thing.
