no new SP album in nine years - but with Download and oHGr albums coming out in that time - kinda implied that; figured this tour was the endSkinypupy wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 2:05 pm Well...fuck. Skinny Puppy to split up for good after 41 years.
I think we all kinda knew it was coming after this tour (I get the sense Ogre and cEvin don't like each other very much), but still sucks.

I'm listening to the #1 song on the charts and it only took 65 years to get there! Congrats to Brenda Lee!

It was just this year that I learned she was 13 when she recorded that. I didn't believe it until my daughter showed me videos of her singing other songs at 13 and her voice was exactly the same.

Didn't know that. Glad she finally topped the chart while she's still kicking.YellowKing wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 9:15 am It was just this year that I learned she was 13 when she recorded that.
I'll give her a pass since she's lip syncing to her own voice.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I am completely baffled at how Sleep Token has become such a huge "metal" band. I've seen their "Take Me Back to Eden" album at the top of at least three different "Best of 2023" lists on metal sites so far. I just don't get it at all.
Their music is fine (if not really my thing) but it's just...rock music. I'm not trying to gatekeep, but it'd be like saying Linkin Park or Imagine Dragons are metal. The whole thing is just really odd to me.
They kinda remind me of TV on the Radio who are a great rock band...but aren't metal.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I don't know how representative those two songs are of Sleep Token, but neither of them strike me as metal. There's at least some big drums and guitar toward the end of the first song, but the second one is closer to R&B than metal to my ears.
That's my purse! I don't know you!

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Nothing else releasing this year that's on my radar, so I guess it's time for the 2023 year-end list.
1. Album of the Year: Myrkur - "Spine". A wonderful evolution of her folk/goth/black metal/ambient sound. My only complaint is that it's a really short album at just over 30 minutes. I can (and have) listened to this one over and over and over.
Best song (and my song of the year): "Like Humans". I must be mellowing in my old age, as this isn't metal at all and would sound right at home on an old Kate Bush or Siouxsie album.
2. Thy Catafalque - "Alfold". Still one of the most interesting and creative bands working today. One minute they're full on death metal, the next is chirpy electronica, then gothic doom, then folk. It's an exciting and eclectic mix with some excellent songwriting.
Best song: "A folddel egyenlo". A perfect example of their unique mix of genres to make something amazing
3. Fleshvessel - "Yearning: Promethean Fates Sealed". Easily the straight up weirdest band on this list with a wild mix of instruments that will make your head spin. Cool chugging guitars, then a left turn into a brass band, veering off into jazz piano for a bit, then lurching into blastbeats with a violin and...is that a zither? A theramin? Just crazy madness that somehow works.
Best song: "Winter Came Early". It's just...bonkers.
4. Enslaved - "Heimdal". Not very often that a band start exploring entirely new musical avenues on their 14th album, but Enslaved did a wonderful job doing just that on "Heimdal".
Best song: "Forest Dweller"
5. Grand Cadaver - "Deities of Deathlike Sleep". A "supergroup" of sorts with members of Dark Tranquility, Katatonia, Disrupted, Halo Effect, etc) this album shreds. It's been a constant on my morning runs and is a great way to get the blood pumping.
Best song: "A Crawling Feast of Decay"
6. Bloodgutter - "Death Mountain". This album is a filthy, nasty, dirty, kick in the teeth. Very old shoot, reminds me a lot of early Entombed albums.
Best song: "Rot Awaits"
7. Dwelling Below - "S/T". This one lurched up out of nowhere and I cannot stop listening to it. It's a short EP (only 17 minutes) but it makes an incredible, brutal impact with it's short time. Has a similar guttural, menacing vibe as Blood Incantation or Gorguts.
Best song: "Attraction Vulgarity"
8. NecroticGoreBeast - "Repugnant". OK, so maybe I'm not completely mellowing as I get older. This is pure, unbridled fury put to music. Strap in, because this thing is a hell of a ride.
Best song: "Repugnant"
9. Bell Witch - "Future's Shadow Part 1: The Clandestine Gate". Another 90-minute, single track funeral doom concept album that just oozes misery, pain, and despair. Definitely do not put this on if you want a quick pick-me-up because it will absolutely crush your soul.
Best song: Well, the entire thing is one song, so...this.
10. Scar Symmetry - "The Singularity (Phase II-Xenotaph)". I was a little worried that too much time had passed for Scar Symmetry to come back and make an impact, but they knocked it out of the park here. Brutal death metal supported with catchy-as-hell hooks and choruses that you'll be humming for days.
Best song: "Chrononautilus"
Honorable mention:
- Dodheimsgard - Black Medium Current
- Incantation - Unholy Deification
- Blackbraid - Blackbraid II
- Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags
- Rotpit - Let There Be Rot
- Wayfarer - American Gothic
- Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit
Disappointment of the year: The Ocean - "Holocene". They've been so consistent in producing incredible tech death, but this album was simply just so boring. There was nothing that stood out about it at all. I listened to it for about a week, then never thought about it again. Hugely disappointing.

Getting really excited for the new Alkaline Trio album in a few weeks. If the first two singles are an indication of what's coming, it's going to be fantastic. I'm kinda hoping they release a "Dan song" before the album is released, but it's still a day one purchase for me regardless.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Really love this song and video... Nicholas Merz played for Sunset Rubdown (Spencer Krug) earlier this year and wound up joining the band. He deserves more attention. This song (indie rock) has great urgency and I love the way it just cuts out at the end.
I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Catchy-as-hell "dwarf metal". No really...that's what the band themselves calls it.
Seeing them live next week. Can't wait!
We are a heavy metal band born in Italy in 2009 and we are currently signed to Napalm Records. Our lyrics and style are mainly inspired to the dwarves of fantasy like in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, this is the reason why people refers about us as "the Dwarves of Heavy Metal" and to our style as "Dwarf Metal".

Great timing posting that Daehawk. My record shop had an Alan Parsons bundle the other day of four of their early albums (I Robot, Pyramid, Eve, and Eye in the Sky) that I was able to pick up for cheap. Have really enjoyed listening to those the past couple of days.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I remember the first time I heard Jar of Flies. I was in a music store and heard Layne Staley's unmistakable voice playing and immediately asked the guy at the counter what the album was. I was a HUGE Alice in Chains fan, but I didn't have a clue that Jar of Flies had been released. He picked up a copy and handed it to me and I bought it on the spot. Definitely a "shut up and take my money" moment.
I wore it out. It's still my favorite thing the band ever released. And they won't reissue the damn thing on vinyl. I'm DYING for a vinyl copy. They have been reissuing a lot of their stuff (Facelift, Dirt, and the post-Staley stuff is getting released), so I'm really hoping they're going to do a 30th anniversary pressing this year. And with their self-titled (aka Tripod) hitting 30 next year, maybe they've just been waiting.
