Compromised OOer Steam Account Reporting Thread

Thanks for that demonstration, BH. It's a subtle but important distinction. I wish Valve would put out a website of known Steam scams in order to inform its users. The only time I've ever used Steam sign-in on another site was for claiming a free game via someone's Bundle they were giving away. I think I've only ever done that once or twice, and the idea of even voting on an external site would jump out at me as a result.

The thing is, the fake voting sites are, themselves, spoofing real Counterstrike trading/tournament sites, and they work exactly like the scam suggests they do. If you're a Counterstrike fan, this is a perfectly normal sequence of events (at least from what I've read - I haven't played Counterstrike since probably 2000.)

See, that's how far off the radar Counter-Strike is to me. Do they ask you to sign in over Steam to vote as well?

I presume (like I said, I haven't personally played CS since the Team Fortress Classic days.) But lots of gaming sites use Steam integration. In this case, probably because they also do skin trading, and it's probably a way to make sure that the person offering a skin actually has it - what's in your inventory to trade is visible to friends.

There is a ton of utility from allowing sites and apps to access the Steam API, and it's perfectly safe.

Oh no doubt it's safe. Not debating that. But like I said, I think Valve could use some education for its users to help avoid these types of scams. Like the little details you can spot that are red flags, for instance.

yep just came to say I just now got the "sup?" msg from rip lol....you'd think they'd change tactics. I almost wonder if its just a script bot sending out these msgs.

Mori, when you get back, ignore the content of the chat with the scammer. My son told me to make him uncomfortable, so I went with that a bit.

I got hit Saturday by the Russian hackers but you all had Steam shut it down pretty fast. Going through the recovery process.

If your Steam status is set to "Away" they don't bother you. Only if you're set to "Online"...

I can't access it yet but I am curious now .

I'm guessing that the scammer unfriended me. I guess I made him feel too uncomfortable. He never did reply...

Same here. I sent them an email (as they haven't visited since May 29) to let them know. Link had misspelled steamcommnueity.com.

Tried reporting but when going to the report link nothing happens. Just get a chasing lines pop-up. Tried both in Steam and on the web.
Edit - was able to report on mobile.
