Re: Too soon to start thinking about 2024?
Activist Republicans support trump because they like the nastiness and the possibility of winning. If Trump loses, they’ll be looking for a new candidate. And Trump will try to suffocate any challengers like he did this year.
This is why I think Biden needs to call out Trump as a loser, liar, and criminal. His fake aura of “winning” needs to be broken. The lawsuits and prosecution alone won’t do it.

Not sure how that will work with the cult if they’ve adopted Dear Leader’s stance on losing: You don’t lose, even when you lose.
If there’s no possibility of (accepting) loss, mentally/verbally…I’m not sure an opponent calling it out will have any effect.

Abbot and DeSantello haven't been arrested for human trafficking and the transportation of illegal immigrants. Ken Paxton has managed to delay his trial for years.Smoove_B wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 12:02 pm Except we've already (apparently) established that running for office (Presidential in particular) makes him immune from prosecution - or at least, delays and confuses the legal process. So if he ends up losing, I'd fully expect him to declare he's running again 0.1 seconds after the winner is confirmed. Even if he's in a bed and unable to travel, he's running.

Re: Too soon to start thinking about 2024?
Remember when Howard Dean let out a scream during the primaries and he was rendered ineligible to be President?
Tell a state they can secede? That's fine.
Tell a state they can secede? That's fine.
Remember, she can't say they don't have the right, so can only conclude they won't. So Presidential!Texas has the right to secede from the U.S. if its citizens decide to do so, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley argued on Wednesday -- a controversial view that contradicts centuries of established history and precedent. Similar secession efforts infamously led to the Civil War.
But "if Texas decides they want to do that, they can do that," Haley said in an interview with the radio show "The Breakfast Club."
"If that whole state says, 'We don't want to be part of America anymore,' I mean, that's their decision to make," Haley said, though she also noted, "Let's talk about what's reality. Texas isn't going to secede."
Clearly. And way to telegraph where this is all headed."I believe in state's rights, I believe that everything should be as close to the people to decide," she said.

I think because we're currently boiling (or just about to boil) we really can't appreciate how much has changed over the last ~25 years. But yeah, when you stop and focus on something something highly specific and then look at how it unfolded at the time (like Dean), it really reinforces how insane things are now.

Yup. There's definitely stuff that looking back seems more significant in a "how was this not a bigger deal?" way, like the Brooks Brothers Riot leading up to Bush v. Gore. And there's a degree to which insane conservative rhetoric (death panels and the like) was mostly dismissed as a lunatic fringe. Add in stuff like government shutdowns, hostage taking becoming part of policymaking...and you start to see how we got where we are.Smoove_B wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 12:32 pm I think because we're currently boiling (or just about to boil) we really can't appreciate how much has changed over the last ~25 years. But man did things accelerate fast. I watched Bush Jr. talking about his respect for Obama and the importance of the peaceful transition of power back in 2009 and it's like...how did we lose even that basic stuff.

Social media? Things were already drifting toward a bad place with the increasing toxicity of the right wing echo chamber, but when it was limited to radio and Fox news, it wasn't as widespread. I'd suggest that social media was like throwing gasoline on a fire.El Guapo wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 1:16 pmYup. I personally blame McConnell for a lot of the disintegration of decorum and respect in Washington. Trump just perfected it.

Re: Too soon to start thinking about 2024?
Absolutely. A lot of insanity flowed naturally from McConnell's decision in 2009 to impose a near total blockade on working with Obama, on the grounds that bipartisan legislation would likely make Obama more popular and harder to defeat in 2012. Like you need "death panels" type rhetoric if you're going to sell your decision to not work with him essentially at all.

We already fought a civil war over the indivisiblity of the union. I think it’s a calculus though. Better together or not?
And Texas needs to remember in any divorce it would get the share of the national debt that may cripple it. And how many carrier air groups does it get?
Look at Europe. 3 or 4 big states akin to Texas, New York or California and lots of small and medium sized ones of varying degrees of richness.
Alone they are not nearly as powerful as the US. If we were seperate nations so would we be not nearly as powerful.

Texas seceding would be a great way to tank GOP presidential hopes for a long time. What is it, 40 electoral votes they wouldn't be able to count on?

That's my first thunk, then the liquidation of federal properties, and then the loss of US incorporations, and trade. Instant international taxation on all "world citizens" and interstate corporate entities in Texas, putting their US possessions in escarole until the dust settles.waitingtoconnect wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 6:34 pm And Texas needs to remember in any divorce it would get the share of the national debt that may cripple it.

There’s a tiny number of whack jobs in Texas that want to secede. The vast majority of Texans think that it’s stupid.
