I was kinda rolling my eyes last year when Combs was enjoying the benefits of her song, but if this is the end result of that then I guess maybe it was a good thing.

Do you feel this way about all cover songs or just this one? Cover songs are generally meant as a way to honor the original artist and song. Combs always lifted Tracy up as the one deserving credit for the song. It was a tribute to her and the fantastic song that he covers it, bringing not only a new generation of fans to her song, but also from a different genre that might not have otherwise heard the song. I'm not sure why you say he "was enjoying the benefits of her song" as if in a vacuum where she received no attention or money.

I'm trying to think of another cover song that would tick the same boxes, but nothing is coming to mind. This one was rather unique - not only now but when it was released in 1988. I remember it quite clearly and like Daehawk, I remember absolutely hating it. Granted, I was 14 and in the throes of testosterone, but it really was like nothing else on the MTV (and it was on MTV quite a bit). Sure, there were plenty of other songs in the Top 40 that were slow, but nothing like this. It wasn't until I was much older that I heard the song again and was blown away.

Combs absolutely benefited directly from the cover; she benefited indirectly - until Sunday night.

I am unaware of how he's been presenting the situation up until Sunday night, but I absolutely agree that during the performance he seemed to just as amazed as the rest of us.

I admit I wasn't a fan of Luke Combs cover either (heck, I'm still not), but primarily because this song was such a personal reflection of black queer America, something Luke Combs is decidedly not a part of. If you didn't know the backstory, it could be interpreted as cultural appropriation.

However, the story he gave at the Grammys, Tracy's endorsement of the cover, and his clear respect for her has greatly softened my dislike of it.

That's where I'm at. Although I have read that she's cleared about 500 grand in royalties thanks to Combs' version, which is nice. She deserves it.

That was a fun trip down memory lane. From 1988 to 1990 I was a grad student at UF working on the surface science of metal semiconductor junctions. I never worked with GaN but was working on AlInGaP (mostly) which is a direct band gap semiconductor with a band gap suitable for blue light emission. I guess I'm the anti-Shuji; I found the work interesting but I bowed out to get married instead.

Very cool. I got to tour a Virginia-class nuclear sub that a buddy of mine was serving on back in 2008. I was completely unprepared for how tight the quarters were. Just reaffirmed my life choice of not going into the Navy sub program.
