I read "Consciousness Explained" when it came out. I remember being disappointed that it didn't actually explain consciousness in a scientific manner. I see that one critic said it should be called "Consciousness Explained Away." And we still can't explain consciousness, but at least he took a good stab at it.

Anne Innis Dagg at 91. The giraffe whisperer.

The Waterloo, Ont., woman's passion for giraffes was highlighted in the 2018 award winning documentary The Woman Who Loves Giraffes.

Dagg received worldwide recognition as the first Western scientist to study giraffes in the wild in 1956, when she made a solo trip to South Africa when she was 23 years old.

Her book Giraffe: Biology, Behaviour and Conservation is known as the bible of giraffes and is still used by scientists to this day.

Rex Murphy (1947-2024). For some reason, I thought he was much older. He was a Canadian icon, although I have no idea whether he was at all known outside the country. He seemed to become something of a right-wing crank in recent years, so I haven't paid much attention to him for quite a while now.

Rex Murphy, the controversial Newfoundland-born pundit and wordsmith whose writing and often-blistering commentaries were the focus of a decades-long career in Canadian media, has died at the age of 77, according to the National Post.

"You might not agree with what Rex had to say, but oh, boy, could he ever say it," said comedian and fellow Newfoundlander Mark Critch, who performed an impression of Murphy on This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

In a report published on the Post's website on Thursday, the newspaper said Murphy died after a battle with cancer, and he had last corresponded with an editor there on Tuesday, inquiring about his most-recent column.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey posted a statement on the social platform X Thursday saying that people there "are mourning one of our own tonight, and sending condolences to his family and friends."

Murphy's "quick wit and mastery of words were unmatched, and his presence was significant — whether or not everyone always agreed," Furey said, echoing a theme that Critch touched upon in his own remembrances.

It's not an exact science. We are not, nor have we ever, been required to post in an appropriate thread, or an existing thread, nor have we been required not to. The whole 'everything must go into general catch-all threads' posting trend is tedious, and makes OO look slower than it is.

RIP Dabney Coleman

Dabney Coleman, the popular comic actor from 9 to 5, Tootsie and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman whose many redeeming qualities including a knack for portraying characters who had none, has died. He was 92.

And yes, I did run into him at Dan Tana's once!

When he wasn’t working, Coleman invariably could be found at Dan Tana’s in West Hollywood, where a hefty New York steak is named for him. “I presume it’s to do with the fact that I ordered the damned thing five times a week for about 15 years,” he said in his A.V. Club chat.

And yeah, it's a danged good steak too!

We just saw him the other day in an episode of Columbo ("Double Shock", also featuring Martin Landau as twins, and Julie Newmar). Coleman was a police sergeant working with Columbo.

Dang, he was definitely iconic. Had one of those instantly recognizable faces.

He did a movie called Short Time where he played a cop whose medical tests showed that he only had a few months to live. He learned that if he was killed in the line of duty his family got double the payout, so he kept trying to get killed taking out bad guys and survived, making him a brave hero. Not a great movie, but he was awesome.

The twist was his test result was switched by a bus driver who had been smoking weed and didn't want to lose his job so the Dabney Coleman character wasn't actually dying.

My father would have been profoundly irritated by the phone call I received telling me he was dead.

He would’ve been at peace with the dead part. He was 88; he had a good run. He’d been struggling with congestive heart failure for a few years. His world gradually shrunk to the few paces he could manage from bed to chair to kitchen, and he was very tired. He knew the end was near. We planned for it together, and he was at peace with it. He would go on his own terms, as one should. When we talked about current events he remarked he was glad he didn’t have to stick around to see the current apocalypse play out.

My father's 90th birthday party is coming up in September. I'm not looking forward to that call. But I know realistically it could be any minute now.
