What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]

Post by Daehawk »

Been needing a room to talk about the movies Ive been watching as of late. Ive seen Ghostbusters Afterlife which was pretty dang good actually. Want to see the latest one but its not on rental yet.

Ive re-watched Night At the Museum. I want to view pt2 sometime. Ive seen it also but Amazon wants to charge me $5 for the pleasure. Im not thrilled with Amazon Prime charging me at $5 a pop for movies from the 80s and 90s. Feels a ripoff. But I only have Amazon Prime and Paramount+ and Paramount+ does have any of the movies I search for.

Anyways I rented Absolutely Anything with Simon Pegg & Kate Beckinsale last night for $3, Its wasn't super funny but it moved along and had some fun bits. Worth $3. Still wish it was free with Prime. Would have been better. Also I kept thinking I wish he'd just stop for a moment and think through what he is about to wish / make happen. He just spouted it out there without thinking. I know it was part of the plot but still irked me. And then there was the teacher he made worship his friend. Would it have been so hard for him to fix that simple mistake way earlier on easily instead of allowing it it to roll into what it did?....yes plot again.

I did love Dennis the dog lol! He was voiced by Robin Williams in his last acting role. Its another reason I rented it. I miss Robin and his funny'ness

I don't watch nearly as many movies as I used to. The streaming format of an 8-12 hour story broken into 1-hour pieces seems like a better medium than 2 hours without a break. I still enjoy the occasional classic movie from the 1940s-70s -- Wife is currently agitating for a Hitchcock binge, and I have a dozen or more old westerns and war movies recorded from TCM awaiting me -- but I don't get around to watching current/recent movies very often.

We took the kids to see Inside Out 2 last night and we all really enjoyed it. Having a daughter only a touch older than Riley made the feels hit home that much more.

On the downside, a couple of the new characters felt really underutilized and much of the surprise of the original's concept is lost now that we all know the "rules" of the universe. However, I thought Riley's story was more engaging this time around. That made up for any weaknesses in the emotions side of the film.

Strangely enough I watched Absolutely Anything recently, I think it was free with ads on Tubi or something. I love the premise and Kate Beckinsale is hubba hubba.

I was going to watch a movie with the wife and kids tonight, but daughter lost the TV remote so I worked instead. She eventually found it, too late to watch a movie though.

MiL is gone now, so we can spend the 4 free passes I got for a dinner theater from a customer of mine. I have no idea what's out at the moment for kids, any suggestions?

I just bought some bread today that was advertising Despicable Me 4. It seems that comes out July 3, I think the free passes are still good. I admit to having been entertained by the previous movies in the series, although Gru's lack of commitment to the dark side is rather disturbing...

I just watched the 2003 remake of The Italian Job with Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. It was fantastic!!! A little confusing at times but a fun ride. Id say it was a nerve wracking pulse pounding thrill ride the whole way. In my opinion its much more entertaining than the original.

I re-watched Dune in anticipation of Dune Part 2, and then I watched Dune Part 2.

I also finally got around to watching Mad Max: Fury Road.

I don't watch many movies these days, but when I do, I prefer them to have barren wastelands.

Zarathud, Seppe, Archinerd and myself hit up the Pickwick theater whenever there's a show we all wanna see (Dune movies, Furiosa so far). You should join us next time. It's become my replacement for the old AMC in Evanston (which is back...but not nearly as great as it once was).

I feel like I ought to watch Dune 2 since I saw the first part, but I've mostly forgotten it and should really re-watch that first. That feels like a chore.

It might end up like the LOTR movies. Was lukewarm toward the first one, quit the second one halfway through, and never started the third.

Just watch the Honest Trailers for the breakdown of Dune 1 and jump into Dune 2. :D

With all of the Marvel I've been reading over the last year or two, I've been stoked for Deadpool & Wolverine. I realized that it's been a long time since I've seen the movies that are possibly going to be relevant to it, so I've been rewatching all of the X-Men movies, from X-Men (2000) up through the most recent one. I'll wrap up with the Deadpool films. I've seen them more recently, but they're worth another watch. I should probably also watch Legion, which is... adjacent, as is The Gifted (which I've already seen.)

I just finished The Wolverine. That one I remembered enjoying, and I did again. It was a nice change after sitting through both X3 and Origins. :puke-huge:

Now on to the rebootish-timelineish films.

These would be great to see in the theater (again, for a few.) I am, again, envious.

We saw this today and came away with much the same opinion. It was good and entertaining, but it does make me miss the magic of the Pixar heyday. Interestingly, Little B 15.3 (who was the one who was really gung-ho on seeing it) was rather lukewarm. Maybe that was just her inner Ennui talking. :)
Isgrimnur wrote: Sun Jun 16, 2024 11:00 pm IF

I really, really disliked this one. It felt like a movie made solely from a corporate marketing team:

"OK, we need 24.2% more humor here. Now let's crank up to 67.8% sadness. Wait, the third focus group showed a 7.6% drop for the last 4.2 minutes...increase the zaniness by 32.6%!"

Ryan Reynolds made a valiant effort to salvage it but the funny parts weren't funny, the inspirational parts weren't inspirational, and the sad parts all felt completely forced and weird. Just a real clunker of a movie all around.

Just finished Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. Was great, loved it. But it was a tad slow. Took until the end to have any action. It started out fast but then just slowly crawled along until the end. Still liked it. Look forward to another one. Hope they make another one.

For 2 days Ive searched for a scifi movie set in space with spaceship battles. Im let down .Cant find a single one. I dont want to see something I saw in the 80s again. I want something semi fresh. Needs to be with spaceships though. The crap after crap they seem to ooze out now days is all so stupid and below F quality with no name actors or formerly well know actors gone off to rot.. Cheesy useless crap.

That's because spaceship battles without a good story basis ARE cheesy. Well-known actors no longer jump at every random CGI fest that comes their way.

I just remember the unique way they filmed ship fights. It was like watching the footage shot by someone floating nearby with a camera. It would zoom in and out, shake sometimes, etc..

That's true, it was pretty good. I didn't mean that there aren't any exceptions, just that for the most part, the lavish space battles that take center stage have been mostly relegated to TV shows. Obviously you still get your Star Wars and Star Treks and random one-offs like Serenity or Starship Troopers but it's really no longer the draw that it was when CGI was still new and exciting. Yeah, Ender's Game is a good suggestion.

I especially cringe at ridiculous swooping, asteroid-dodging, dogfight-style space battles among ships that are practically on top of one another. The only show I know of that got space combat right was The Expanse, but believably isn't what Dae's looking for and it's not a movie anyway. Sorry, no recommendations, just wanted to mount my high horse. :)
