Greece has a history of some truly awful behavior, unfortunately. Reporters Without Borders has routinely ranked them as either the absolute worst or close to it of all European countries on the World Press Freedom Index.

NPR did a piece on Greece years ago about how and why they had to adopt austerity measures. One of the things they brought up was that in Greece, it was almost a matter of pride to avoid paying taxes. So, they had a populace that felt that they didn't need to pay for any government services, yet wanted to be able to retire early while the government took care of them.

So yeah, very little that happens in Greece shocks me these days. That doesn't mean I don't think that's horrible. It just means they're badly in need of some social and government reform.

Ancient Greece was a great nation. Gave us some great things. But modern Greece seems a cesspool.

Modern Greece has suffered huge brain drains over decades.

But you also have to understand the numbers coming into the EU are similar to the US and the fact that the Turks and Russians actively help illegal immigration to destabilise on the EU border from Finland to Greece.

On the southern side most nations are in turmoil and can’t stop illegal immigration. Again aided by Russian middle men who make cash from helping people go to Europe.

It may seem fantastic but many immigrants entering Europe don’t want to go to Europe at all but rather the UK - who are getting up to 500 entries a day in small boats from France with about 40,000 on average per year coming in.

I’ve always believed the best way to solve this is to fix the broken countries these folk come from. And to turn back those who are obviously just economic migrants and ask them to apply properly.

I used to work for a company that used to follow up our diversity training (off the record) that "we should hire the best person for the job" and ignore race/gender. The problem with that phrase is that it's a cover for institutionalized racism. The vast majority of the time, a white man is going to think "the best person for the job" is another white man.

Yep theres still that. Its wrong but its there. Depends on who is looking at the resume. The world cannot move past its past and move into the 21st century.
