I’m all for cake. My wife is a pie lover. Somehow we make it work.

Neither. Our financial advisor sends us each a fancy cake on our birthdays. We eat a sliver or two and give or throw the rest away. Pie would meet the same fate.

Trying to remember back to when I used to like sugar, I think pie would win because it was a platform for Cool Whip. For some reason nobody puts Cool Whip on cake.

I've been hungry for Funeral Pie for the last few months, but I wouldn't say no to some Christmas Carol Cake or Greek Wedding Cake either.

It can't even be a debate. Pie. Cake is OK and I can't turn down a brownie, which is cake adjacent but pie is just... A late night food, a snack, a breakfast. Something to eat with coffee or ice cream or by itself. It's never dry.

All of this translates to ILB will prove conclusively pie is better by voting for cake.

One of my favorites is I guess a hybrid: Boston Cream Pie, which although it has pie in the name, is actually cake, so go nuts, pedantic food nerds!

Cheesecake

not cake, not pie.

But if I had to stick to the original rules: Pie - hands down. I actually think I could go so far as to say I don't like cake. It has to be seriously superior cake for me to let it in.

I don't really care for sweets. While there are some cakes I will eat, most I find to be too much; it's like eating concentrated sugar.

So yeah, pie. Always pie.

I enjoy some cakes. I LOVE carrot cake. However, most of the time we have cake in the fridge, it will get thrown out.

I don't think I've ever thrown out pie.

Huge pie fan here. But not berry pie.

Are we also counting cobblers as pie? So many cobblers eaten on Scout campouts over the years...

So, I went cake (and shocked that it's pie in a landslide). But partly I think this turns on the quality of the cake or pie. I think a really good cake beats out a really good pie (especially since ice cream is more viable as a cake filling than a pie filling). BUT I think it's easier to make a bland cake than it is to make a bland pie. Like for a $5 cake vs. a $5 pie, I'd probably go with the pie.

My late night food cravings are typically something salty or some cheese (or best yet, cheese on salty Triscuits). If I had to choose between cake and pie, though, it'd be pie 99 times out of 100 - preferably a fruit pie.

It's been over 30 years since I've had a Dutch oven peach cobbler, but man, they are perfection. I'd say cobbler is pie, yes.

I like both, but I think pie is superior because it has a better ratio. In a pie, it's 80% good stuff (filling), with 20% bread/crust, whereas a cake is the reverse at 80% bread and 20% good stuff (icing).

Steak and kidney with lots of gravy please!

For most of my life cake has been my choice, but now as an old(er) man, pie might be the better option, as cake is too sweet now. That said, I rarely eat either.

When I was younger, I would have said Cake, but I appreciate pie more now. We have a restauraunt run by Mormons nearby and they make the best pies. Favourite is the Dutch Apple Pie. These days, I find the icing on most cakes to be way too sweet.

I would prefer pie over cake, but I definitely have cake more often due to it's relationship with various celebrations.

Additionally...

For Cake:
The 'bread' of cake is often dry and horrible.
The icing of cake can sometimes taste like poison itself, and if not - its best form is still just sugar and butter

For Pie:
A reasonably good crust is very easy to achieve.
The filling is sometimes 'too much' or fake, but often it's just perfection.

There are very strict circumstances and ingredients and skills where one may pull off a "good cake" - but 'homemade, store-bought' pies are everywhere and many of them are very good.

To that point, that's how Carrot Cake rises above the rest. The 'bread' is great and the icing is unique and can be perfection.

Both!
But I may lean pie simply because there are probably more pies I like than cake.
But you put my grandmother's carrot cake in front of me and that would be my #1 choice overall.
I'll vote pie though because I eat it more than cake.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

I love carrot cake as well, but with raisins? Ewww, no thank you. Don’t know if that’s traditional carrot cake but I always have to ask first.

Pie because there are way more savory pies than savory cakes.

What cake vs what pie? Apple pie beats most cake. Ice cream cake beats most pie. Buttermilk pie loses to most of either. Banana cream? Sorry, cake. Traditional 'yellow' cake with traditional frosting (the thick, dense kind, not the newer 'extra fluffy' fad) beats most pies. Pecan pie? Urinal cake beats that.
