Awwwwww me and my wife loved him. He was great in everything and made every film he was in a winner. I just saw him last night in The Italian Job remake. Danggit. He was in so much of what we watched over the decades. His look and voice were instantly recognizable. Gonna miss him. Big actor, great guy. He was right up there with Christopher Plummer as one of the great Canadian actors that have been recent lost. Not that many of them left now.

It's odd...88 year old man dies, and yet I was caught off guard. Guess I thought Sutherland was forever.

Re: R.I.P. The thread of death....celebrity or otherwise
Yeah, Shatner. Will be truly the end of an era when he passes. But like I said, we lost most of our high-profile older actors now - Christopher Plummer (2021), Donald Sutherland (2024), and Gordon Pinsent (2023), all three which I've long considered to be pillars in the Canadian acting world. The last one might not be as familiar to Americans, but he was just as prolific. Probably would be recognised for being in Red Green. Both Sutherland and Pinsent were in the Pillars of the Earth miniseries together.

Shatner is 93. Takei and Koenig are both 87. The next few years are likely to be hard on Star Trek fans.

I just wanted to add that every tank driver I've ever met (which is only three but still...) said they wanted to be a tank driver because of Oddball.

The only tank driver I've ever met (Vietnam era) liked to talk about how they'd open up the ventilation system, fill it full of pot, then sit there inside the tank with the ventilation masks on.
So... yeah. Same thing.

He did. He was put on the show to try to draw in the Beatles/Monkees audience, which is why he was cast so young (when he first appeared 57 years ago.)

When "Butterfly" came out my wife and I were dating. We went into Walmart because she wanted to buy the "Butterfly" single or album but she had no clue who the band was or what the name of the song was. She asks the Walmart guy that works in the electronics department, and he has no clue what she's talking about. Exasperated, she finally starts singing the song and doing the dance right there in the middle of the electronics section.
It was both the cutest and cringe-iest thing I'd ever seen, so of course I asked her to marry me shortly thereafter.
P.S. Her performance worked, and she walked out with the CD single.

Multiple people could face charges in Matthew Perry’s death: reports
Law enforcement sources recently told PEOPLE magazine, NBC News, and ABC News that a federal probe into who supplied the “Friends” actor with ketamine before he died could lead to charges against multiple people. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

Shelley Duvall, star of ‘The Shining,’ ‘Nashville,’ dies at 75
Shelley Duvall, the intrepid, Texas-born movie star whose wide-eyed, winsome presence was a mainstay in the films of Robert Altman and who co-starred in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” has died. She was 75.
Duvall died Thursday in her sleep at her home in Blanco, Texas, her longtime partner, Dan Gilroy, announced. The cause was complications of diabetes, said her friend, the publicist Gary Springer.

Another great person. She always seemed so kind and humble for a star. As a kid I saw Popeye and found her to look just liek the cartoon character..which is to say kinda strange. But she was a good one and will be missed. RIP Shelley.

I "met" her once at a book signing, where "met" means stood in line, handed her a book, and paid her a compliment while she signed it. I don't remember if she even glanced up when she handed my book back.

You're maybe thinking of Sue Johanson, Canada's version of Ruth, who died last year. They were both quite similar, in that they really got down to telling like it is.

Re: R.I.P. The thread of death....celebrity or otherwise
My grandfather worked in radio and media and had a story about a time he was to introduce Richard Simmons at an event. As they rode together in the limo, Simmons had an emotional breakdown and, sobbing, rested his head in my grandfather's lap. My grandfather was an extremely friendly, welcoming man and did his best to comfort him, but it was obviously a very uncomfortable situation. Apparently, when they arrived at the event, Simmons instantaneously transformed back into his gregarious, energetic public persona.
I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Well, when Shelley died, I didn't think Dr.Ruth and Richard Simmons would be the two she'd be put with.
