It's noticeably up around here... in TFG low income "affordable housing"country. I don't know the statistics but there are signs of shootings posted on telephone poles and sirens like never before. Police presence, ironically, seems down.

Anecdotally, the threat of violence is crazy high around here. I'd have never considered moving here in 2003 if it were literally in the same zip code as what it is now.

That’s the issue. Police presence is way down, FOX and social media coverage of crime is way up, and people’s attitudes about violence and crime are open. After the pandemic, criminals went back to work too.

Blatant organized theft rings operate to sell on Amazon/online and are tracked by cameras. But that used to happen during shipping in Chicago with stuff sold on Maxwell Street, but it was a secret you didn’t really pay attention to.

It’s not a Biden problem. It’s a historical problem.

When you go into places and even the cured meats are locked away or big name stores are closing because they keep getting hit by these people it just is a bad look.

Or eBay. Amazing how many activation locked brand new MacBooks and iPhones there are for sale.

But when popcorn and a drink are $30 at the movies it’s hard not to feel like everyone has their hand in our pockets.

Big name stores are closing because of debt and changes in consumer behavior, not theft.

Locking up meat was the next grocery store “innovation” at WalMart just like self-check out, which also happened during the pandemic in the UK and Australia. And Subway where no one is jumping the counter to “steal” their meat. Testing out new anti-theft devices is nothing new. The latest is security tags under the price labels.
