With the current amount of work I doing and exercise I am getting, I am facing a reality that at present rate I may still lose weight and that is something I no longer want to do. I might have to move toward an absolute calorie intake level and then increase or decrease it depending on my weight trends. Right now that looks to be around 3200 calories a day. Maybe? I'm in completely uncharted water.

4th of July, in which every single person who attended our cookout brought a dessert, did me in. I'm back up to 202. I'll do a proper weigh-in next week after I've gotten back on track.

Couldn't walk at all last week due to heat/humidity. I credited myself a mile anyway for mowing the lawn. The one time I tracked it, mowing came in at 0.96 mile.

I've been rowing 20 minutes a day consistently every day, and it's starting to help a bit. I haven't yet broken the 200 barrier, but I have been trending down rather than up. I was hoping to get started back on running, but the heat indexes have made that practically impossible. Triple digits every day, and even if I waited until 8:00 at night it's still been high 80s. No thanks.

My benchmark for walking is 75 degrees or less at 9 a.m. -- 80 is acceptable if it's low humidity and breezy and/or cloudy. It's been almost two weeks since we've had a walkable morning by my criteria, and it will be at least Thursday before that changes.

I've decided that from now on whenever I make a large batch of something, chili for instance, I'm going to freeze two thirds of it instead of just continuing to eat until it's all gone.

I've come to realize that a big part of me not losing weight is inability let food go to waste. I grew up with a single mom making minimum wage, and she often gave up meals so that my brother and I could eat. It ingrained in me not to waste food.

My wife grew up even poorer than I did, so she tends to over-buy food and cook bigger portions than necessary. It winds up being a bad combo. We've got more food than we can eat, yet I can't let it go to waste.

I've had to make a concerted effort to let those last two doughnuts go stale, or stick with my healthy lunch rather than finish off that bowl of pasta that will be no good after today.

I eat leftovers until they are gone before going on to something else while maintaining portion control enforced by app. So when I make 18 cups of chili, it's either going in the freezer or I'm having almost nothing but six literal cups a day for three days (about 2000 calories).

I pride myself on rarely wasting food...but it's easy to control because I do the menu planning, the shopping, and the cooking and only have to feed one person other than myself. Except when Wife brings home unauthorized food, such as leftovers from the workplace, or talks me into going out/getting takeout instead of cooking. That doesn't take much arm-twisting if she offers to pay.

Funny story: Maybe a month ago I bought a large red potato to make oven fries for myself. When the night came a couple of weeks later to make those fries I couldn't find my potato. I looked all around the pantry's produce shelf with no luck and decided I must've forgotten to bag it or something. Forgot about it and bought a replacement spud. The fries were delicious, as always.

Yesterday the pantry was emitting the unmistakable odor of a very rotten potato, yet I still couldn't find it. I had to bring in Wife, who has a bloodhound's sense of smell. She tracked it down to a small beverage cooler that I'd moved to the back of the pantry. Somehow, the clever spud had decided to hide in there.

I have been using Lose It and it's interesting to note the amount of loss necessary for people at work to start to comment. It's a lot higher than I expected. Also interesting that my kids think there has been no change.

Heh, my old doctor, I think would have said great job as he was hounding me to lose weight ever since I had a reasonable grasp on quitting smoking. Once I lost my job and finally started to shed the pounds, I lost access to him. My new doctor never saw me at 270 pounds and she is hounding me to eat better.

How is Lose It working for you? It has been exactly what I needed for weight control. An exceptionally easy way to obsess. I've been at a perfect range for over 3 months now and now that my activity is on the rise, I'm thinking I can start gaining weight so long as it's building health (muscle and endurance). If I were younger, I'd not seem to have much fat at all. Being a leathery skinned 270 pound 53 year old frame, flab is going to hang no matter how much I convert to muscle but I'm OK with that. I've not been doing it for the vanity. I've been doing it to feel better and feel better about, you know, moving around, even as a bit of vanity has been creeping in. That vanity is quickly put in check with that 44" waist turned to 32" waist havign a bunch of loose skin done lopping over my belt.

That's a very good way to describe it and it seems to be working well. I paid for the full version for a year and when I started, I picked a weight that I could live with if necessary as my goal - I should hit that target in the next 10 days (the original estimate was Sept 20th). That weight still has a BMI above 25, though, so my next goal will be to get to a BMI of 24. I think it should be doable.

As for the app, I like that it isn't a "diet". I told it my goal was to lose 1.5 lbs/week and that I was a "weekend eater" (that is when my family goes out to eat) - so it set me up with an extra 250 calories on Friday and Saturday by decreasing the calories the rest of the week with everything adding up to that 1.5lb weight loss. I also chose the lowest level of activity - walking 3 miles per day - and have left it there even though I am up to running 50+ miles/week. I use my Garmin to track my activity and it integrates perfectly with Lost It. I aim to eat 1/2 the calorie bonus I get from my exercise because I'm not confident in Garmin's calorie estimates (and if I didn't, I'd be at less than 500 calories net per day which seems like a bad idea).

The end result is I can eat whatever I want - I just have to stick with the calorie limits. I have never tried to cut out a food, but it has happened organically as I try to feel full inside those limits. I used to eat toast with butter every morning as part of my breakfast - now I have an apple and 1.5 ounces of peanuts because I found I feel full longer and the calories are about the same. Originally I had switched to an apple with peanut butter and while it tastes good, I found that eating the peanuts themselves was more enjoyable and made me feel full longer. I eat a salad at every dinner because it keeps me full through when I go to bed and it is only 100 calories (I don't like salad dressing, so that helps a lot too). And if I feel like I really want bread, or french fries, or a Coke, I can do that too - I just have to eat less elsewhere. If someone would have told me to do all that on intentionally, I don't think I could have done it.

My only complaint, and it's very minor, is that scanning barcodes doesn't always bring up certified calorie counts and setting it up on my own is not intuitive. On those items, I try to shoot low on what I consume just to be safe.

Barcodes never seem to bring up certified results but I don't care. On my new phone they scan almost instantly and that's so much easier than looking for a match manually or heaven forbid entering manually.

I also developed a liking for peanuts as a snack as well as a number of chip like things (though not chips themselves) like Cheez its because I am food obsessed still and an ounce peanuts or a portion of Cheez Its eaten one at a time with a glass of water slows down the eating process and makes it much more mindful. It's not a solution for not smoking (all these year later) but it helps.

I'm to the point where my weight is stabilized but I still seem to be slowly losing even on the max setting as I am trying to be as active as is reasonable. Soon I might start going over the limit instead of redlining. That will not be a comfortable decision for me. I am a slippery slope kind of person.

Have you thought about setting your weight target to gain 5 lbs so it increases the calories and once you see the weight starting to increase then you can fine tune from there?

I don't see that as an option. That must be a paid for thing. My goal is currently set to 185 and I weighed in at 170.5 this morning. I figure until I build muscle 175 is about where I want to be. No higher but not crazy low either. At 170.5 my BMI is 21.9 which is generically well within the healthy range but I am at an age where I am very conscious about maintaining muscle and methods to mitigate against losing it. If I feel like my ability to work on muscle is being hampered where I want to be can up, probably all the way back to 185 or so.

When someone sees you regularly it's hard for them to perceive the change unless it is very rapid. The change is perceived incrementally and only obvious when they see a team picture from last year or something and go wow, stess, nice work! Also, we are all way more concerned with how we look/are perceived than anyone else is.

Bought some 32" shorts off the clearance rack today. I started this game with a 44" waist. I never thought 32s would ever come again and I was ecstatic to see 34s. And there's a goodly amount of fat still in my midsection, so if I ever tone up I can put a reasonable amount of weight back on and stay in these. Looks like I will have to through old clothes again to see how much of next step down I still have. If it weren't for the fat laden loose skin and a complete lack of muscle, this would be a return to my mid 20s.

Are you able to login as unpaid? If so, try following these instructions to add a set "bonus" calories (basically adjusting your budget) to each day. Once you start gaining weight or get to where you want, you can adjust the bonus so that you end up neutral for weight loss.

THANKS!!!! I had no idea that gear was there or did anything. Right now things are good but if I start dipping below 170 or (when eventually, I hope) I feel like I could be building muscle if I had more caloric energy then I will start adding calories to my budget.

This really has been a fantastic app and I should probably pay for it, though I will say it chews a lot of battery life off my phone and that as presumably for their tracking of me for ad purposes that obviously can see what I'm doing on my phone, generally, even as I tell my phone and apps not to cross pollinate. So I don't feel too bad as I am as much a product as a customer.

Well, poo. Today I had my first full walk in almost three weeks and friends, I have slowed down. Each mile took me over 18 minutes, and that's pretty awful by my history. 'Course, it was 79 degrees by the time I finished and the humidity is building back up so just finishing at all felt good.

I signed up for Lose It for a year. Last time I used a calorie tracker app I did quite well, and I like the interface of this one more than the one I used previously. We'll see how it goes.

Going to start a new chart since this is Day 1 of the app:

Now there's something to look forward to if I ever do lose any weight.

Coming to grips after a year and a half that weight gain is OK at this point. I'm not quite there yet so every time I'm pushing 175 I keep cutting calories I need to stop that and remember I'm in a rebuilding muscle mode, as much as I am capable of that at this point anyway.

So far so good with the Lose It app. I've been consistently running under the 200 mark since last week when I started using it, which is more than I can say for the previous several months.

So I was at the local Riverfest a few weeks ago, ran into the mayor at the beer tent (where he usually can be found). We share the same taste in gaudy Hawaiian shirts, so we always chat a bit at such events. I told him he looked like he lost weight...he then pointed out his shirt was 3X. :P

Wife claims I'm losing weight, but I've not been weighing myself (I'd have to find the scale). I did notice that recently my appetite seems to be less than it used to be...I made a frozen pizza the other day (Home Run Inn...best of it's ilk), and could barely eat half -- I used to eat the whole thing.

I've got some of those 3X shirts, but I always look for seersucker fabric. I thought I'd have lost some since drastically cutting most drinks with sugar, my scale didn't think so.
