It's a reference to a Chris Farley SNL skit because he's overweight...pretty weak attack.Holman wrote:Here's the first attack I've seen:

Re: Who will be Kamala's VP?
If it was coming from someone else, I'd just think it was an attempt at humor because he really does look like Farley playing that character in that photo. But from Ben Shapiro it's probably an attack. If that's all he's got, he's not got much.disarm wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2024 9:52 amIt's a reference to a Chris Farley SNL skit because he's overweight...pretty weak attack.Holman wrote:Here's the first attack I've seen:

Comparing Walz to an incredibly beloved comedian in one of his most endearing SNL sketches is probably not the winning formula Ben Shapiro thinks it is.

I've had the business news on ever since the announcement. Normally, they are performing fellatio for the GOP propaganda machine with a bit of news thrown in and I turn it off in disgust. Today, nothing. No politics at all. When it's not mostly business news, it's the Olympics.
This seems tacitly a good sign. No fanfare like with Vance but no "ZOMG! WHAT ARE HIS QUALIFICATIONS THE SOCIALIST BASTARD!" They had to have been digging for at least a week to be ready to carry out their orders but today, silence.

YES! Great choice. Walz is the man of the hour. Also it displays Harris' astuteness in her first big decision. She is in touch with the electorate.

Re: Who will be Kamala's VP?
Not my choice, but I'm not upset by it either. I really liked Josh Shapiro for three things he brought to the table that Tim Walz does not: (1) Youth; (2) moderate liberal leanings; and (3) Pennsylvania.Holman wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2024 9:07 am I'm so relieved! Walz is gonna be fun.
He is also very genuinely what JD Vance desperately pretends to be. I wonder if they'll even have a debate.
I think he was most likely going to be the choice before the progressives deep-sixed him with "Genocide Josh" and some rather weak-tea accusations of not doing enough about sexual harassment in his administration.
That said, with those attack lines out there, I get why Harris went with Walz. It's probably the smart choice. While Walz seems to be the progressive darling right now, I haven't seen anything from him that really offends moderate sensibilities, and while MN is already solidly in the blue, I do buy the notion that his every man vibe and non-coastal home base might be an electoral draw for some undecideds in battleground states (I also think I believe everything I've read about the minimal impact of the VP pick on home state results).
In the end, I'm most bummed not to see a Harris/Shapiro ticket because it would have really projected relatively youthful vibrancy in a way that a Harris/Walz ticket doesn't. Picking Shapiro would have been a declaration that the Dems have an up-and-coming riser from a swing state. I think that would have been a powerful message to a lot of voters who are tired of leaders who look like their grandparents or great grandparents.
But I like what I've seen of Walz, so I'm not too bummed out. Maybe the right choice in the end.

Put a beard on him and he's Santa Claus.
That's not youthful vibrancy.
[Edited to add: Although, the Santa Claus angle might be a nice thing to play up.

And there it goes... Walz is an also ran. Harris didn't choose Shapiro, the real candidate, because she is part of the pro Palestinian extremist faction... It took until 11:00 Eastern. Now how often will this be repeat or will they look for something else to stick?

I never would have guessed that.
From appearances only, I would have put him 8-10'ish years older (partly because Harris looks younger than 59).

Walz seems like a fine choice. My only worry with not going with Shapiro is are they leaving some number of small but potentially pivotal PA votes on the table.
But this stuff is hard to predict, and seems like a decent choice, so we'll see how it all plays out in the end.

Walz and a large population of Americans are overweight. Since Republicans think providing meals for school kids is Socialism, getting rid of that will be the solution.hepcat wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2024 10:03 am Shapiro's only touchstone here is that Walz is overweight. I don't think the number of voters overall is likely to change much. It's more that due to the wisdom of the Founding Fathers 50,000 voters in Pennsylvania matters a lot more than 50,000 voters in Minnesota.ImLawBoy wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2024 12:05 pmIf Shapiro falls in line and loudly supports Harris/Walz, I can't imagine there are too many PA votes they're going to lose.El Guapo wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2024 11:46 am Walz seems like a fine choice.
