He was vocally against the war in Iraq; MSNBC cancelled his show in 2003. I don't think he ever believed it was ratings and was instead retaliatory (based on what I've read)
Maybe next year, maybe no go

I'm surprised he was that young, was still alive, and had a show until 2003. He was the first day time talk show how I remember along with Mike Douglas. He seemed very old in the 70s to a elementary school kid. Much older than my parents who are now in their mid 80s.
