Weight shot up this week. Huge. I can no longer tell myself this is muscle build. So I'm pulling back on calories again. I'm still willing to gain weight as I try to build strength but not at the pace I'm going right now. Concurrent with cutting calories again, I'm trying to find a way to increase protein. That's going to be a challenge and right now it's looking like cutting back on breads somehow and mainly increasing meats as they seem to be the most protein rich foods that I'll eat. That means either buying meat to freeze or more trips to the grocer. It also means an increase in my food budget. I think I'm going to keep my suggested intake where it is and allow myself bad days but generally try and stick between 2600 and 2800 calories a day for now. My body is already complaining about this decision.

Was there a typo? It looks like your average went up 0.4 lbs. Maybe I just have a different definition of "huge"?

I touched 177 this past week after 4+ months of not going above 175. It only took about 3 weeks to go from a heavy weigh in on 173 to that weigh in. I am also keeping in mind that I have already cut back for a few days to get to that .4 average increase. If I find myself quickly dropping back down, I'll allow more calories. I'm just tweaking before it gets out of hand. If I had an extra 1200 calories this week, it likely would be contributing not stopping at 177 being the high. Though, honestly my fear is not the weight itself 185 would be fine by me, maybe even 190. My fear is bad weight that ends up making me hurt, as opposed to the good weight I am hoping for that makes me feel "better."

I'll keep fiddling as things change. Right now my fiddling is going to be trying to get more protein in my existing (or slightly shrunk) calorie structure and see how that goes. If that brings on weight but the weight feel like it making me better not worse, then I'll be all for it... So long as I'm not shooting up to 180 as a peak as fast as I shot up to 177.

Edit: This is a more visual representation of why I'm fiddling with my calorie intake. Note: that 3 day upward spike actually went higher than that. I number fudged at above 177 when I'm like "I can't be that high" so instead of my normal first thing in the morning weigh in, I waited until after my morning routine shed some weight and tried again. :ninja:

Dammit. OK, this high and no higher. I've been under a lot of stress for a long time and it's got at least another month to go. Diet and exercise have largely fallen off my radar. My 3-mile walk has dropped to 2 miles when I walk at all, because I don't have time. I've just got to reimpose my self-discipline and try to care again. Because once all the upheaval is over, I'm going to be pissed at myself for getting fat.

God I love all the data tracking available today regarding weight loss, calorie count and calorie expenditure.

What a time to be alive if you love data analysis.

I'm not tracking much for myself, just enough to give me an idea (I'll look at individual walks/runs, pacing, that sort of thing, but I never consolidate over multiple events), but the amount of data and reporting trends etc that I could be doing is amazing. I'm not tracking pushups, situps, lunges or squats over time, but I do a specific amount of each during some basic, low impact, fat man's circuit training I do in my basement. I might start tracking more closely if/when I'm not doing such simple and limited exercise. We'll see.

Friday and Saturday were not good, willpower fails. Sunday I thought might be bad but I looked at the caloric content for my dinner last night and it was about a third of what I thought it was, so maybe Sunday wasn't so bad.

I haven't exercised since Thursday. My knees were acting up and I noticed my thighs were ache-y (the good kind, from a good amount but not too much exercise) so I decided to give both time to recover a bit.

Back at it tonight.

So right after write down my commitment to scale back on calories to slow my weight trend I do a morning walk jog and conclude by drinking a free 44 oz 550 calorie Cherry Coke. OK, so I will resume my goal of 2600 to 2800 calories a day with an increased protein content tomorrow....

Free is free.... :shifty:

Today's my birthday so I will fuck my body up as much as makes me happy. The same for when I celebrate with my parents later this week. But I remain committed to renewed uh... commitment. I'm definitely back in the mode of thoughtfulness and mindful eating, but things such as weekly/bi-weekly grocery orders remain an impediment. I.e. I've managed to take some walks this week without picking up snacks on the way back, but as we have our groceries delivered irregularly for financial and efficiency reasons, it results in the snacks and sweets we allow ourselves for that period all arriving at once, and if I'm experiencing poor mood, especially coupled with cannabis use, it's easy to eat those snacks in a single day. Keeping that stuff out of the house has been a considerable part of my success, but we need some treats. It's the constant struggle, and right now willpower is a challenge.

Yeah, for me it's waking up in the middle of the night. I'll get up to pee and just have a ravenous craving for something sweet or salty.

I have a medication I have to take when I wake up sans food though, and that helps prevent me snacking the moment I fall out of bed.

Nothing like Zepbound to kill the desire to eat…anything. I am food motivated and have never been able to skip meals until the past few months. If it didn’t help, I would hate this lifestyle. Getting so tired at GenCon was my wake-up call to change.

Starting my wife's insurance plan's weight loss program again. (Now called Wondr). I think it normally costs a couple thousand dollars? Not sure. But last time I did it a few years ago, I lost and kept off about 30 lbs. Only my habits changed, I still have most of the knowledge I learned (eat whatever you want, but learn WHEN to eat, and HOW MUCH).

I hit my lifetime peak weight a month ago at 215, and am down to 210 now. Short term goal is 199 (get and stay under 200). I'm 5'10 FWIW, so definitely currently borderline obese (or was at 215).

Hate the way I look currently, but on the right path to better health and hopefully more energy.

First three weeks of program are designed to cut out as much added sugar as possible (before, they said cut out ALL added sugar). This REALLY worked for me before, and I truly felt a huge difference just doing that, so I look forward to the same. My sugar intake is off the charts due to mainly ice cream, but also I bake a lot recently - cakes, cookies, fudge, pastries, etc. And even though I usually use about half the sugar that most recipes ask for, it stll adds up.

Sugar is literally toxic to our bodies, but soooo delicious, and so addictive. :D

Weigh in today was disappointing. Down, but well within normal weight fluctuation range, meaning I probably didn't lose anything.

Oh well. Exercise planned for this afternoon. Calories still well below daily limit for weight loss.

I had a bit of a setback last week. Stopped logging meals, got lazy with the fast food, etc. It reversed a couple of weeks of progress which startled me back into compliance. Just goes to show if you're not keeping disciplined daily, you can undo it all with a few moments of weakness. It's frustrating, but apparently that's life as an old bastard.

This time of year is always super tough for me with the holidays. I just have to hang in there until after my doctor's appointment in November. If I can go into the end of November down a good 5 pounds or more, he'll be happy, I'll be happy, and we can all have a merry f-ing Christmas. :csmile:

None of this fancy tracking for me, but I think I did the equivalent of about 10,000 steps at the gym this evening so that's 10,000 better than my normal old average of zero. Feel pretty good, must be a few of them there fancy endorphins kicking in?

No idea how much it's damaging but I try to do my sugary goodness in the morning as part of my get moving routine. Sugar in my coffee and confections or cookies and such after I do my aerobic movements but before I move onto PT or walk/jogging. I figure I get to have my cake and eat it to, hopefully by burning off most of those simple sugars when I am most active. What that's doing to me arteries and inflammation (which is an issue for a guy with crones, allergies, asthma, sleepapnea and seemingly ever other inflammation problem) , no idea.

I may have to work down some of my sugars as I try to work up more protein though. This remains to be seen, as I'm always fiddling with my health, trying to find ways to improve (or slow decline) in ways that are acceptable to me.

Yes, thank you. I should have probably written "added sugar". Not referring to naturally occurring sugars in fruit for example.

Average weight back in March was 213, my highest in three years.

Weighed in at 206 this morning. Yay for improvement.

I been thinking about joining "the gym" or actually joining the our community senior friendship center which contains a gym. It's substantially cheaper than the gym and about equidistant as the closest gym. I'm still caught in COVID cootie fear mode though. We'll see how I feel as it gets colder. Right now, I'm loving the 60 degree weather we've been getting for getting outside and walk/jogging. I'll love it even as we get to 40s and probably 30s when it's dry and not windy. But now that I'm running and sweating hard a lot more than I'm walking, I'm not sure how it's going to work with the real cold and maybe some work out equipment might do me some good as well... But COVID cooties and gyms...

Any pugilists in the crowd? Current or former?

I'm way too old to actually let someone punch me in the head, or god forbid, the stomach, but I spent a lot of time in martial arts as a kid and the training and fitness levels of boxers have always fascinated me.

I'm thinking about looking for a gym that will accept old fogies, once I lose a certain amount of weight, and hopefully once I hit a certain minimum level of fitness. Which, I am no where near achieving yet.

However, the idea of learning how to box is appealing, even if I have no intention of ever getting in the ring with anyone. It might help motivate me.

Opinions and/or experiences?

I believe that the main criteria to go to a gym is money. If you can afford it, they let you in.
Also, I don't know if you are medicare or if you are even old enough or disabled enough to be on it but if you are looking into the Silver Sneakers program. It gives you free gym membership at participating gyms I'm currently enrolled at LA Fitness with it. No copay or anything.

Went to the community old folks center and it's got a good enough equipment section and seems low use enough that I'll likely join (mask in tow) when the weather turns and then try to work on a routine that allows me to strength train (or work on resistance, as those crazy kids are saying) better than at home as well as use their treadmill. At $38 a year, the price is right. Most of the equipment looks more suited to PT than it does to a gym but I'm OK with that too. So now I need to work on a plan and finally start to work on my leg, core, chest and back, etc... and then find a way to stick to a plan that requires me to committing to commuting and being in public and worst of all breathing and sweating heavy around other people. I've got time, yet. It will easily be late November or maybe even January before I start to have concerns about cold and sweat outside not mixing unless it gets rainy and windy on a regular basis.

Still very COVID nervous. I guess too many viruses and specifically breathing viruses have brought me too low in my lifetime already. No one was masked in the building when I took the tour today. So likely I be an island in middle of the masses.

Very soon I will be doing my first ever seniors thing. How that hell did that happen?

I think I've hit peak jogging time for a good long while, as my walks are pushing 100 minutes or more of jogging days so as I push forward on time for jog, I'm cutting back jog intervals per walk.

Loving the cool weather. It makes getting out to be active so much easier but I fear what cold weather is going to do for my routines. The darkness is already setting in. Cold weather follows. Sun lamp season is starting. I may need to scale back on calories and I've really become accustomed to my consumption levels. More concerning though, is I'm trying to build health and inactivity won't do. I have joining the senior center in my back pocket but I so much prefer to just getting up and go outside. Getting a car to go be locked in a room with other heavy breathing people and then getting back in the car all sweaty nearly every day is not something I look forward to.

Here's a practical alternative worthy of consideration if you're looking for a hassle-free way to stay fit: save yourself the risk of viral infection and inconvenience of driving to and from the gym, and consider purchasing a simple 12 KG kettlebell (roughly 26.5 lbs) instead. It's a compact piece of equipment that provides everything necessary for home workouts, allowing you to build strength, muscle, and athleticism without the need for a gym membership. Though as with any new exercise routine, always consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen.

Having said that, one of the greatest benefits of using a kettlebell is that it doesn't take up much space at all. Additionally, a kettlebell workout can burn around 400 calories in just 20 minutes, allowing for rapid results. Here you can see a beginner-friendly kettlebell workout specifically intended for regular individuals aged 50-plus:

In fact, that particular Youtube channel is largely aimed at helping people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s achieve their desired results within the shortest possible time using kettlebell training.

I've thought about a kettleball in the past. There are some highly recommended ways to work on your hamstrings with such a tool. Maybe sometime in the future but for now my right arm wouldn't be up for such things. It's still a major struggle and with a build in risk of setting me back to do most exercises at between 6 and 8 pounds yet with this arm. Stuff with momentum working with inertia? 3 pounds is still my limit.

Well crap. been a month and only down 12 lbs. I mean, it's better than nothing, but usually the first 10 lbs come flying off and the next 10 take a month after that.

I'm not exercising as much as I think I should, so that doesn't help, but I'm still slightly disappointed.

This is not a humble brag. I've been through this sort of routine before, so I have some benchmarks that I'm not meeting. Of course I'm the oldest I've ever been, and that probably plays a factor too.

I went to the dentist yesterday and my blood pressure was the highest it's ever been for me. I took it later that night and it had come down a bit, but was still higher than normal. Really disappointing considering I've dropped a good 5+ pounds, and the weight loss was what was supposed to save me from going on BP medicine.

On the other hand, while my eating is pretty good, I haven't been keeping up with the exercise. Really going to try to buckle down and get back on track with that. I have about a month and a half before I go back to the doc.

It might not be you.

Blood pressure monitors aren't that expensive - best if you get your own and check it yourself at the same time every day. It will show you the trends that spot checks might miss. You can also make sure you do it the right way - feet flat, back straight, no talking for 5 minutes before hand and arm at heart level.

I do this to watch trends. My monitor doesn't seem to be that accurate. My cardiologist says my pressure is way better than my Meijer (just like Omircon but cheaper) shows. Still not good enough to reduce my meds. Age and genetics. 25 years of smoking didn't help. Having been obese and sitting at desk with virtually no activity for 25 years didn't help. Still fighting the good fight now is better than never fighting it all.

Recent readings before I take my morning meds and start activity:

143 95 56

152 89 50
155 95 52

After I've been sat at the doctor for a bit and sometime after morning meds and food and coffee they usually show me in the 120s.

Thanks for the video. I'm thinking of picking up a kettlebell this winter. I've been doing similar things with some dumbbells but a kettlebell would change things up which isn't bad. I will have to work on a good space; I don't have a lot of room for swinging things in the room I use and I don't want to move to the basement.

Kraken, I've been meaning to ask. Are those miles walked numbers everything or are those intentional exercise walking miles? The heart rate thread got me thinking about the fact that I do a fair amount of walking but much of it is not at a rate that really pushes my heart rate up or makes talking hard. I know it's good for me either way (you can't sit and walk at the same time) but I wonder how good it really is.

Adding another 50 calories a day to my "extremely active" budget.
Went from loving the cool to not so sure about the cold and hating the rain in the course of a week.

Edit: my weight is trending back toward under 170, which I don't want. I want to build muscle/strength/endurance now. Some fatty weight is not bad for my health, I don't think, and ultimately this all about feeling better. So I'm adding another 50 calories a day to my budget for now. I'm sure I will become less active as it gets cold. When the weight starts pouring on, I'll start cutting again.
