Mongolian folk metal band The Hu covers Iton Maiden’s “The Trooper”

Had no idea folk metal was even a thing...
Now for a twist. I've never heard of this Australian band the Easybeats, but the Mona Lisa Twins strike again by covering one of their songs..

For me, nothing will ever top this folk metal cover from Turisas.

I have the Easybeats version on Spotify. You can tell it's the Sixties by "spend my bread."Rumpy wrote: Sat Oct 12, 2024 1:02 pm Had no idea folk metal was even a thing...![]()

So, how does it compare to the original? I've never come across the song before.

Wow. That was a big rock song locally growing up and then stuck around as a big classic rock song. It was played on AOR long long after it should have relegated to oldies, probably because it had a protopunk feel to it that sustained in the 70s and 80s and was anthemic for bringing in the weekends.Rumpy wrote: Sat Oct 12, 2024 2:29 pm So, how does it compare to the original? Re: Awesome covers
I don't remember ever hearing it on the radio while growing up in the 80's and 90's, and I used to listen to the radio a lot back then.LordMortis wrote: Sat Oct 12, 2024 4:48 pmWow. Woah, The Sword got back together! At least long enough to record this killer cover of Tull’s “Locomotive Breath”.

It's been out for years, but I was relistening to Colin Meloy sings Morrisey the other day and was quickly reminded why it's one of my favorite albums.

Dang, I need to track down that Colin Meloy, hepcat. I had no clue that was a thing.
Speaking of things I had no clue about until today, here's Pearl Jam covering The Beatles "I've Got a Feeling." While they've covered this live quite a bit, this was a studio track that was only included on the Japanese version of Ten.

Re: Awesome covers
Does it count as a “cover” if a band does an updated version of their own song decades later? Regardless, I really dig this version.

Re: Awesome covers
I give the album 7/10. I think it's very enjoyable whether you're a fan of the originals or not. I'm actually surprised by how restrained it is. It's not simply "metalled up" re-imaginings--most of them are pretty faithful to the source material. Which is kind of my problem with it... for half of the tracks I'd rather just listen to the originals. Every Day Is Halloween is definitely a good compromise between the original and the much heavier, sped up version released on Undercover.Skinypupy wrote: Mon Mar 31, 2025 11:20 pm Does it count as a “cover” if a band does an updated version of their own song decades later? I think the new version of I'll Do Anything For You is amazing! Conversely, I initially detested its take on We Believe, though it's since grown on me a little. The addition of the riff from the 1986 live version is hideous. The wonderfully harsh, percussive synth line of the original is pushed into the background, losing the track its menace that made the original off Twitch so glorious. But I really like the other re-imagined Twitch tracks.
Definitely looking forward to seeing this live next month!
