Proving yet again that the usual rules of music simply don't apply to them, Blood Incantation is releasing a strong album of the year contender tomorrow with "Absolute Elsewhere" . A truly unique concept album made up of two tracks ("The Stargate" and "The Message") each broken up into three segments ("tablets"), each of which flow into a crazy 20-minute musical journey that seemingly goes everywhere but never overstays it's welcome. It's fascinating to listen to the shifts from Gorguts style brutal death, into a dubstep break, into David Gilmour-esque soaring guitar solo, then to a thrashy Morbid Angel riff, straight into an Opeth style folk bit. Nearly every review is calling it "Pink Floyd meets death metal" which feels like a very apt description. It's quite remarkable.

Not only are they all different, but they never disappoint. In my opinion, Claudio Sanchez is a musical genius who can do no wrong. The guitar playing is always amazing, and that voice...

Have you listened to his other project The Prize Fighter Inferno? It's more electronic music and less guitar, but it's still pretty great and exists within the Amory Wars universe of the Coheed. More good stuff!

He really is insanely talented. I'm not as-into his side projects, but all the acoustic stuff that I found on Youtube pretty much saved me during the earliest days of the pandemic. There's so many unplugged songs / shows they did for radio stations or promos and I'm amazed at how great it all sounds.

For example

Yeah, Claudio's voice in live acoustic performances is just insanely good...sometimes better than the album version.

And the egg shaker in this one may be an all time great demonstration of that instrument...

I respectfully disagree. :D Josh is legitimately and awesome drummer and one of my favorite people to watch on these performances.

you have to enter the drawing to get it, and winners get the actual physical artifact (limited quantity of each, sometimes very limited)

i admit i entered the drawing for the X-Ray record. i was reading about these a while back. mid-century Soviet pirating ingenuity!

UPDATE: also entered the drawings for Billy Big Mouth Bass, the Game Boy cartridge and Teddy Ruxpin

My better half needs the desktop, so I am spending the night listening to music. Right now I'm in the middle of a Sinead O'Connor and Amy Winehouse stretch, and it's pretty depressing to be reminded of what we lost.

This is an absolute perfect album if I've ever heard one. It's going to take something very very special to beat this album for the 2024 album of the year for me.

I swear i can close my eyes and hear David Gilmore.

Just an absolutely amazing album.

Same on both counts. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Blood Incantation (their last album of ambient noise was meh) but this one is brilliant.

They're always incredibly silly, but I've had a soft spot for Cradle of Filth for 20+ years now. Their new track is great for spooky season. And I'm happy to see Zoe (the blond singer) get a more prominent role, as she's a truly lovely person (met her on the 70K cruise a few times in her pre-CoF days).

Wind Rose's new album "Trollslayer" is pretty fun. Nothing revolutionary, just some very catchy, very silly folk metal.

Also, this video from last week's Sanguisugabogg show in Maryland is hilarious. Might need to spin them this morning (yes, she's ok).

My nephew plays guitar for a popular band in San Diego. This is their first studio recording and there are some live cuts on the site.

I remember exposing him to Hendrix and blues way back in the day. Impressive stuff.

Listened to the new Cure album this morning. I’ve never been a huge fan of theirs, but I do enjoy most of their big radio hits.

This album struck me as similar to all their others. Half a dozen slight variations of the same song, with one or two standout tracks peppered in. My favorite was probably “Drone:Nodrone” (which reminded me a lot of “Burn” from The Crow soundtrack). “All I Ever Am” was catchy as well, but I have no particular desire to revisit the rest of it.

Also, why am I only just now learning of Fat Earthers? The name alone is worth the price of admission. The hilarious videos just seal the deal.

Tribulation's new album dropped earlier this month, and I completely missed it. I absolutely LOVED their first two albums, but thought the last one was mostly meh.

This new album is a very, very different beast. It leans far more into darkwave/goth rock than metal, with about a 50/50 split on harsh vocals and Sisters of Mercy-ish cleans. I think it mostly works, but I'm still on the fence a bit. I feel like the songwriting hasn't been nearly as strong since Jonathan Hulten left and while the clean vocals are an interesting change, they're not nearly as powerful as they need to be to carry the music.

I've only spun it a couple times, so hopefully it grows on me.

I'm absolutely in love with Tribulation's new album, top to bottom. It's fucking anthemic. Time & the Vivid Ore is a sleeper hit. I can't stop listening to it.

On a related note, I'm not familiar with ex-member Hultén's solo work, but he's touring with Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats this winter and I'm IN. Uncle Acid's latest, Nell' ora blu, is also incredible. I was meaning to post about it when I do a round-up of the several amazing albums I've heard lately, it's been a great autumn for new music for me.

Agreed that's the best song. It's also the song that sticks with the harsh vocals.

After a few more listens today, I've landed on "it's just OK". I can appreciate what they're trying to do and I actually like the direction change, but his voice simply can't carry it. Andrew Eldritch, he is definitely not.
