Just finished Kaos.
It was just ok for me.
It was very slow to start and didn't peak my interest until about halfway through.
Ending was HORRIBLE in that it just ended on a cliffhanger of sorts.
I checked and there is currently no plans for a season 2.
If this would bother you, I'd skip it. I might have skipped it if I knew this before.
Jeff Goldbloom seems a bit more subdued overall but still good.
I don't remember a lot of Greek mythology but did recognize some of the references.
I do think it was an interesting take on it though. Bringing it into the modern age and treating the gods as fact, not myth.
I liked Dyonosos or however it's spelled and thought the actor did great. Posideon and Hera were just ok. Promitheus was also great.
Don't remember Orpheus or Yridici and thought they were both bland but not sure if they were supposed to be.
The Fates were also great.

I watched it because I finished Black Clover and had nothing else to watch at the time.
Others will probably feel different especially if you're really into Greek mythology (or it might be worse depending on how well it treated said myths. As mentioned I don't remember enough to know).
Again, even though the back half hot me more interested, just like a fall from great heights, the sudden stop at the end killed it for me.

Finished 3 episodes of Kaos so far. Dionysus was nicely cast. Hope to see him in more roles.

Jeff Goldblum was having a great time, but playing himself as usual. Fun to see him in roles letting him live his campy best life, especially fitting into being older.

Prometheus was nicely acted and just a great role/storytelling trick.

Will and Harper

Okay, I'll admit, I teared up a bit even watching the trailer for this one. It seems like a uniquely worthwhile movie in this day and age.

Although I dread the audience reviews that I'm sure will appear on rottentomatoes as the usual crowd of knuckle dragging assholes decry it as woke propaganda. :(

....I hope I'm wrong though.

Just saw that the first season of Yellowjackets was added the other day to Netflix. We have a thread here, but it's definitely worth a watch if you remember the 1990s, lived in NJ and/or like psychological horror (but I repeat myself).

Maybe next year, maybe no go

Honestly, I feel like everyone should be required to watch Will and Harper in this current political environment that seeks to demonize so many. It’s so full of humanity and humor that it might help some people regain some of their own.

edit: of course, the usual crowd (including trash person Megyn Kelly) are up in arms because the doc tries to "normalize mental illness". I made the mistake of looking at the youtube comments on the film and it's like reading the words of the worst of humanity quite often.

So did Netflix. Cancelled after one season.

I eventually grew to enjoy it, but I won't be sending hate mail to Netflix over cancelling.

Kaos completed its arc. There could have been more, but it would likely have deviated from a classic modernization of myth. And become dark with its themes about permanent death.

It felt like a cliffhanger to me.
Spoiler:
Prometheus' plans came together in a way that surprised even him, and I assumed the second season would cover the downfall of Zeus and his cohorts. As well as what really happened in Hades. Obviously, there was something else going on there too.

Wife and I watched the first 3 episodes of Kaos and lost interest. It just wasn't very compelling. Some of it had to do with just too many characters and no real protagonist. I assume Riddy was at some point. I also just never really got Goldblum as Zeus.

It took me about 3 or 4 episodes before I could get into it. And I'm not really sad to see it go, as I hinted.

I think I started liking it once Dionysus started questioning things and stopped being a comic foil for everyone. And once they started getting into more of the backstory of Prometheus, and Hades showing up (David Thewlis will usually put me in a seat if he appears anywhere).

Goldblum was just being Goldblum, so I can't really credit him with any great achievement in the show.

Just finished Preacher.
First half to 3 quarters of the 1st season was too slow for me but then it became more interesting. S2 and S3 were better.
Last few episodes seemed rushed and the ending of the final episode seemed REALLY rushed but from what I can tell the comic run ended the same way.
Gonna probably check out the comic run anyway.
Currently flipping between rewatching Wednesday, Queen of Villains, Hajime no Ippo, Nobody Wants This, Terminator Zerro, Heels, and a few more. Plus things on other channels.

I'm 2/3 of the way through Scavengers Reign, an inventive animated series starring the environment of an alien world. There are some human characters and a simple plot, too, but the main interest is the planet's imaginative ecology. Netflix picked it up after Max canceled it, and is considering a second season.

Scavenger's Reign is the best substitute for Raised by Wolves we can expect. It, like Wolves, does NOT go in a direction you're expecting at any point. It's completely original and fun. It does stretch credibility a bit with some of the more outrageous stuff, but damn it, that's what I like in my science fiction. :)

Park Chan-wook, the Korean filmmaker behind the insanely great Oldboy (the original, not the needless American remake) has written a new movie. Uprising is on Netflix now and I’m really enjoying it. Of course, I’m a sucker for historical action films from South Korea, Japan and China.

Update: Finished it after being interrupted by other things. It’s really, really good.
Spoiler:
The final battle is a 3 way sword fight in the middle of a fog bank in which everyone is against each other. That’s something you don’t see often. It’s wonderfully shot.

Netflix’s deal with Universal will add more live-action films
Netflix will bring even more Universal films to its lineup thanks to a new deal that will send the studio’s live-action movies to the streamer starting in 2027. Under the agreement, Universal and Focus Features’ live-action titles will appear on Netflix no later than eight months after their release in theaters. The new arrangement also includes renewing their exclusive licensing agreement for animated films from the Universal-owned Illumination and DreamWorks Animation (DWA).

Netflix will get to stream Universal’s live-action films exclusively for 10 months following its debut on Peacock — but the movies will return to the NBC-owned service at the end of this window. This will eventually replace Amazon’s existing deal with the studio that started in 2022,

I watched the new Zodiac documentary. I love true crime shows and this one was really good. The angle of it was from a family where the suspect spent a lot of time with during and after the murders.

Zaxxon wrote: Tue Jun 04, 2024 11:00 pm There was some discussion of this in the HBO Max thread, but now that it has a second life on Netflix, you should all go watch Scavengers Reign.

It's been cancelled....again.
Scavengers Reign, the animated series which found a new home on Netflix after being canceled by Max earlier this year, will "not be renewed" for a second season.

The news comes from co-creator Joseph Bennett, who revealed the update on Instagram.

"As of right now, Scavengers Reign is not being renewed for a second season," Bennett wrote. "I wanted to let everyone know directly because I really love our fanbase, they’ve been such champions for the show, and I don’t want to leave everyone hanging."
I really liked it; I hope it can figure out how to launch a S2.
