Thanks to Agatha All Along, I think I’ve heard that damn song 83 times so far. There’s nothing I can think of that would make me want more of it.

Watched Raiders of the Lost Ark with the Winder Twins 11.5 today. One of them liked it, the other thought it was “pretty boring”.

The “eeeeewwwwww” from both of them during the face melting scene was very satisfying. 😂

Silkwood, 1983. Meryl Streep, Kurt Russel, Cher. Screenplay by Nora Ephron. True story of the nuclear industry union advocate and eventual whistleblower, Karen Silkwood. "Factual accuracy was maintained throughout," says Wiki, and it was controversial in its day. I hadn’t seen it since it originally came out in theaters. Streep was masterful and Cher was no slouch, either.

A Face in the Crowd (1957), starring Andy Griffith and Patricia Neal. It's weird how TCM always seems to schedule this film just before an election. Just a coincidence, I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Been watching a lot of mostly bad movies during my convalescence. I watched about a half-dozen Bruce Willis movies from 2022 (holy shit was he ever prolific...even when he clearly couldn't physically do much). Watched a Sniper movie, then was treated to 3 more in the series (and that's not all!), none very good but but it was 50/50 whether I'd have found something better by pre-empting the "up next". I watched the first season of Tulsa where Rocky is a 72 year old fresh-out-of-the-joint mobster exiled to Tulsa and tasked with establishing a mob presence. It actually did not suck, even if the assembly of characters were highly implausible. Not gonna pay to see S2, though.

I still have at least 2 more days of couch time. If the doc relieves me from the sling and puts me in a brace, I can at least work (I can drive short distances now, but with only one hand, I wouldn't drive with a customer in the car).

I watch Tulsa King as well, but it’s a hate watch. I think it’s comically awful. Taylor Sheridan, to me, is the most overrated (but unfortunately prolific) writer working today. TK feels like someone wanted to make a PG version of The Sopranos. Each week is more ridiculous than the last, and not in a good way.

We watched LOTR: The Two Towers yesterday with all the kids. I've always thought of Two Towers as the obvious weakest link in the trilogy, but it holds up remarkably well. Especially the Gollum CGI, which I was expecting to look rough by today's standards. Granted that's mostly Serkis' stellar performance, but it still looks amazing.

We did go with the Standard instead of the Extended Edition though. Asking an 11 year old to sit through a 3 hour movie is a tall order, and I think adding another 45 minutes would have been a bridge too far.

They Live (1988), starring Roddy Piper and Keith David. A timeless classic.

+1000

The six minute long fight scene is worth the price of admission alone. JUST when you think it's over, it starts up again. Making it all the more hilarious.

I think I own most of Carpenter's movies on Vudu and on Blu-ray.

And I still maintain that Prince of Darkness is WAY better than the critics thought. :snooty:

Seems to be a They Live thing going on online or something. Yesterday I watched a video of reactors reacting to the "Im here to chew bubblegum and kick ass" scene from the movie.
Im all for it. I love this cult movie. Always have. Roddy was my favorite wrestler in the early 80s and then his lines were in Duke Nukem 3D and such lol.

I've got the whole extended trilogy and really want to sit down one day and binge the whole series. I haven't seen the films since they were on DVD shortly after theatrical release, and I've never seen the extended versions.

They couldn't. The Crebain (the crows) would have reported it and Sauron would have just pulled the Nazgul on their darkenbeasts back to Mordor where they would have downed the eagles and recovered the ring.

Gwaihir (the Lord of the Eagles) knew this. The one thing that they don't show in the films is that the eagles are intelligent and more than able to debate the point.

Or you can just go straight to the source.

It wouldn't surprise me. The film is intended as a political critique, and it applies to today's world as much as it did to the Reagan years.

Has anyone seen the movie Hell Comes to Frogtown? Id be surprised if Hep hasn't seen this one but I am surprised that I have never seen it. Roddy Piper was my favorite wrestler and this came out around the same time as his They Live movie we were talking about in the other thread. (1988) And its got Sandahl Bergman from Conan in it too.

May need to hunt it down for viewing..

We saw Blazing Saddles at the Alamo this weekend.

Was great to see it on the big screen.

I had a dental appointment yesterday and the assistant asked what we did over the weekend so I mentioned seeing this and her response was, "I've never heard of it."

Early thirties.

She also never heard of Young Frankenstein, History of the World Part 1, or pretty much any other Mel Brooks movie aside from a vague recollection of Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

At least the dentist had some idea of who I was talking about when I mentioned Tony Todd passing.

Was she raised outside the United States? I could understand someone from Germany or something never having seen it/heard of it. But if you had told her you had just seen a movie called “Stop, My Lederhosen Will Get Damp” and that you hadn’t heard of it before that, she’d probably think you were crazy.

I went through the entire Gamera series, who, if you're unfamiliar, was essentially a Godzilla rip-off in turtle form.

While the original 60s film was a straight Godzilla knock-off, the series steadily got more cartoonish and kid-friendly through the decade. The series went on hiatus until being resurrected in a fantastic reboot trilogy in the 90s. Those three films (Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion, and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris) were by far my favorites of the entire run.

The series culminated in 2006's Gamera the Brave. This one attempted to balance the seriousness of the 90s versions with the kid-centric tone of the 60s films, and does a pretty good job of blending both styles.

There’s a difference between satirizing racism/bigotry and participating in it purely for jokes. Mel was (mostly) in the former camp. But if you go back and watch some of his movies, there are moments that stand out as the latter. It seems to be primarily when it comes to the depiction of homosexuals, from what I can remember.

The whole French Mistake sequence in Blazing Saddles is a bit cringey today but in 1974 was definitely more "acceptable" then.
