Saturday Night will be seeing TLC & Gwen Stefani.

I don't feel like being here all day although I wouldn't mind seeing Gin Blossoms. Jane's Addiction was going to be there but...the fight happened.
I got Sat tickets only, wife wants to see TLC and me....Gwen Stefani.

I saw them open for Living Colour decades ago and was not impressed, but I didn't like them to begin with. In a brush with rock 'n' roll fame, though, we were right up next to the stage and my friend put his zippo on one of the monitors. The bassist from Candlebox grabbed it and used it light his cigarette. (In a better brush with rock 'n' roll fame, later that night Vernon Reid was thrown into the crowd upon us by his band mates and we helped keep him aloft and move him back to the stage.)

I saw Candlebox last summer and they were great...band and singer sounded perfect, good energy on stage, and an all-around great show. They opened for 3 Doors Down and were by far the better band that night.

I saw Living Colour back in January (opener for Extreme) and they're an amazing live band. I knew Vernon Reid's guitar playing was going to be awesome, but what I didn't expect was the voice and showmanship of Corey Glover. It was an incredible performance all around. After they were done, we were waiting for Extreme to take the stage and Glover walked right by us in his street clothes, said hello and shook my hand, and walked out the back door of the theater to leave for the night...seemed like a totally chill guy and blended right in with everyone else when he wasn't performing.

To be fair, Candlebox was a last minute replacement as openers for Metallica when Alice in Chains had to drop out of the tour (Layne went into rehab).

Candlebox was truly awful (the singer appeared to be very drunk/high) but the disappointment was compounded because they weren't AiC. Hence the booing off the stage.

I have to buy tickets (probably tomorrow), but my brother and are going to see Rick Wakeman at the Arcada Theater in St. Charles, where the wife and I saw Carl Palmer last month. Among other shows coming to that venue is a band doing Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" -- seems like they are vying with Copernicus Center to be a landing place for ancient Prog acts.

I was supposed to see the Foo Fighters at the Soundside Music Festival in Bridgeport, CT this weekend, but they announced this afternoon that they're pulling out of the headlining spot. Apparently Dave Grohl just learned to do what he should have done nine months ago...

This means that the festival lost both of its big Sunday acts since I bought tickets. First, Queens of the Stone Age backed out a couple months ago due to Josh Homme's illness (singer/guitar), now the Foo Fighters aren't coming because Dave probably has to babysit.

I was a little upset when they replaced QotSA with Bleachers because they're a totally different style of music. Losing the FF now has people who paid big money for tickets understandably pissed. Fortunately, the FF replacement should actually still make for a good show...

They're trading one band for two, so I'll be seeing Greta van Fleet Sunday evening, followed by Jack White as the headliner. I've never seen GvF, but they supposedly put on a great show, and I'm pretty excited to see Jack White again after the amazing club show I saw just a couple weeks ago. It's not the Foo Fighters, but should still be a good time.

Well. Hurricane Helene made Southstar festival a mess, 2 opening acts were canceled. I got to see Juvenile, Ludacris, TLC, Shinedown and Gwen Stefani. The park grounds were destroyed and the festival was canceled today.
My daughter was a bit upset since today was the day she was looking forward to, but she saw the lead singer of Jimmy Eats World at a local restaurant but she didn't bother him. She was hoping he'd see she was wearing her Jimmy Eats World shirt though.

This is what we were standing in last night and more rain overnight made it worse. This was the picture from this morning.

Soundside Music Festival in Bridgeport, CT yesterday... skipped the early afternoon unknowns but got there in time to see Norah Jones, Teddy Swims, Bleachers, Greta van Fleet and Jack White. The festival was run really well, weather was good, and we had a great time!

Nice lineup. Who were the unknowns? Wonder if it's any I know.

We got the Bob Uecker seats for Rick Wakeman, last row, balcony, but center. $49, 2 rows ahead it jumped to $79 and mainfloor was $119 but only one ticket remained. He's billing this as a final tour, but I see he's doing a Prog cruise with Robert Fripp and others...

The full Saturday and Sunday lineups...

We didn't have tickets for Saturday. The original Sunday lineup was supposed to include Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and The Kills, but those three bands all backed out and were replaced by Bleachers, GvF and Jack White.

Even though I have tickets, I’m skipping the Fleshgod Apocalypse/Shadow of Intent show on Sunday…something I haven’t done before.

A five band show that doesn’t even start until 7:00, so there’s no way it’ll end before midnight. I have to be up around 5:30 Monday morning, and I’d prefer to not work all day feeling like shit. I’d really like to see Disembodied Tyrant and Shadow of Intent, but I’ve already seen FGA 8 times and have never heard of the other two bands.

Had tears running down his face when he turned around and proceeded to belt out every word to every song for the next two hours. It was amazing. The other two kids weren’t quite as excited about the music but they both thought the stage show was amazing.

To their credit, the sound was excellent and you could tell both the band and the crowd were fully into it. I think the band had a little extra motivation as three of the four are from here (they actually got their start at a “Utah’s Got Talent” local showcase in Provo). While the entire spectacle was the opposite of what I generally enjoy about concerts, I’m thrilled the kids got to see something they liked so much.

So Rick Wakeman was last night. Early on, he joked about his hernia operation and how his doctor told him to lose weight and he cut his hair, losing 40 lbs in the process. Last time I saw him with Yes in the late 70's, his hair was down to his ass, so it was a funny joke. He was, though, kind of the epitome of an aged rock star. He still had unquestionable talent, his playing was spot on in the manner you see after decades of repetition. However, when I saw him with Yes, he was surrounded by keyboards, and during his solo was just unbelievable (check out Yessongs Wakeman solo on Youtube). Last night, he has one stack of 2 electronic keyboards, and a grand piano. It was either-or, they were not positioned where he could play both. The keyboards were mostly used for his epic solo work - Journey to the Center of the Earth and Six Wives of Henry VIII in particular. Most of the rest he did on the grand piano...this included a medley of Yes songs of which I could only identify Close to the Edge. Prior to this, he told a story on how he decided to portray the Yes music, his son, Oliver (a Facebook friend), asked him how he composed the music in the first place and he said "on the piano." So he did what his son deemed a "Yes Sonata" but Rick admitted was not in the sonata form (three movements) and added that it's the same piece he played yesterday--but different, because he does transitions between the pieces different every time. Anyway, it was superb.

One thing I didn't know, he played the piano part on Bowie's Life on Mars...and is still quite proud of that. He did a piano version of that song that was excellent. His last piece before encore was The Beatles Help and Eleanor Rigby. I heard his Eleanor Rigby before (he said was in the style of Prokofiev but to me it sounded more like Rachmaninov), but Help he said was more along the lines of Lennon's intended ballad and not the pop song it turned out to be.

What was lacking was the passion I saw in the 70's, but that's a persistent issue with older musicians. Technically, they can still bring it, but years of repetition without innovation leads to a performance that on the surface seems just fine, but probably takes away from prior memories when passion was their thing.

The venue last night was doing a lot of advertising for upcoming shows. One notable act is Ides of March on December 8. They are from Berwyn, my hometown, and Jim Peterik grew up a few blocks away. Vehicle was that band's biggest hit...they moved to Los Angeles afterward and when it didn't turn out, they had a minor hit with LA Goodbye. Before my mother died, I took her to see Ides of March at a local festival in Berwyn, after the show, Peterik told my mom he remembered her from the neighborhood and signed a CD for her. It was likely bullshit, but she was over the moon and I appreciated it...he also played for my 8th grade class (we went to the same grammar school and Ms. Hull was his favorite teacher).

My wife doesn't recognize any of their songs, not all that surprising. She does recognize Survivor's Eye of the Tiger which Peterik wrote and performed (aside from Survivor, he was also in .38 Special). Among other acts coming to that venue soon are The Bodeans, I saw them open for Elvis Costello years ago. I'll have to play my wife a few of their hits to see if maybe she's interested in them.

Just be aware that Sam Llanas, the singer with the distinctive voice, is no longer in the band. Hasnt been for quite a while.

Deal breaker for me.

Iron Maiden is the first album I ever bought, at a garage sale in the mid-80s.

How was The Hu? I've watched a few of their songs on YouTube and really enjoyed them.

tbh i was more interested in seeing them than Maiden. i'd only heard _The Gereg_ some years ago, but thanks for reminding me i need to check out the newest album. a full 45 minute set (i was dreading it would be only a half hour or less) and they were well-rehearsed and put on a fine set. many of their tracks played live have a sort of 'generic international metal' feel to them outside of the indigenous instruments, but this is kinda common with a lot of the folk metal acts - however, "Yuve Yuve Yu" sounded amazing.

Ah, ok, thanks. I showed her videos for Off Broadway, including from a show at the Arcada a few months before we saw them in Aurora. She commented that Cliff Johnson looked like one of her residents (she works at a nursing home) and when we saw them the singer was definitely not Cliff Johnson. Upon further investigation, Johnson died shortly after that concert in St. Charles. He could very well have been one of her residents.

got an ok-priced ticket for The Jesus and Mary Chain / The Psychedelic Furs for tonight on StubHub. (had been deciding between that and Earth "playing the entirety of _Earth 2_" which was also tonight >:{ super hate concert conflicts.... worst one was back in 2019 where there were literally six bands playing the same evening i wanted to see, but i had a really long job intervew that day and it wore me out to the point where i just ended up falling asleep for several hours and missing all of them)

They look old as dirt but sound amazing.

They released their new album today. It’s amazing. Takes me right back to Disintegration.

They lead off playing the new album in its entirety. Then an intermission and they come back with Plainsong, and it’s off to the races through their hits for another 2 hours.

Really bummed I didn’t catch that show in Seattle. Never seen them live, and they’ve been one of my all-time favorites since middle school.

The new album is the best in years. By a long, long way.

I turned 50 today, so I’m taking this release as a birthday present. And a timely one, since aging and the padding of time are such prominent themes.

This week I saw Woosung, who is one-fourth of Korean pop-rock band The Rose. His solo stuff is less rock, more pop, and the audience was even more dominated by swoony young women than when I saw The Rose earlier in the year. I think this is the first time that I've been to a concert where the singer's hip-thrust/crotch-grab led to a deafening wave of girls screaming. I was not the oldest person there, but I was probably the oldest male who wasn't there to supervise his daughter.

Despite it being so far out of my wheelhouse, I had a good time. The songs were good, the singer and his DJ were clearly having a lot of fun, and the space - an open-air rave venue - was a nice change of pace. It provided some very necessary escapism from the election results.

Wasn’t planning on any shows in November, but after last week I really need a metal show to clear my head. So we grabbed tickets to King Diamond and Overkill on Saturday.

While I’m not overly familiar with his music, I saw Diamond with Mercyful Fate at Psycho Fest (RIP

) a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Tickets for this one were a little more expensive that I’m usually willing to pay ($60) so I’m hoping it doesn’t end up in the other concert thread.

Yeah, her being there was a big reason why I was willing to pay the extra $$. I absolutely adore Myrkur.

And Overkill was great as well.

I could have sworn I saw Overkill on one of the cruises, but their not on my "Bands Seen" spreadsheet so I guess not. Will get to add three new bands after tomorrow...yay!

i typically have an allergic reaction to high-pitched falsetto metal, but am trying to expand my horizons and have mostly liked what I've listened to from both bands this week. Definitely won't be a mega-fan, but definitely interested enough to keep both in rotation. Bonus: my buddy and I are both big Kevin Smith fans, so we fully plan on reenacting this.

Yeah I'm not really a big King Diamond fan by any means, but these guys are getting up in age and I'd hate to regret not seeing them. I kick myself regularly for putting off seeing Dio years ago and then he passed.

Not an Overkill fan either, but they are one of those bands I wouldn't listen to much at all, but live they are great. I can see why they've had success for 40 years.

Man, Night Demon and Overkill were both excellent. Definitely need to check both of them out more.

King Diamond was ok. Not being very familiar with his songs definitely dampened my enthusiasm. The guys around me who knew every word seemed to be having a wonderful time. Didn’t help that he didn’t hit the stage until 9:30 and I had been up since 5:30am. We left before it was over, as I was just too damn tired.

Glad I saw him, but definitely not someone I’d go out of my way to see again.
