I bought Diablo 4 on release and have a barbarian up to level 50. I bought the DLC and have jumped back in.

I have all legendary equipment (legacy though) and I still have problems surviving. I'm playing on normal difficulty (and play solo) and man, I just get my ass handed to me regularly.

Am I just a bad player or am I missing something real obvious with this class? I went on to icy veins and followed a build pattern but still feeling the pain.

Should I start over with another class or just git gud?

I know I'm echoing myself, but look at the builds over on Maxroll rather than Icy Veins. Icy Veins used to be the go-to for such things, but a couple of years ago the guy who ran it decided to stop listening to input and just go with his own ideas for builds. As a result, their stuff is often flawed, sometimes deeply.

There is something more at work here because you should not be getting trashed even with a sub-optimal build.....only higher difficulty levels become build critical and even then only in specific things like The Pit, Nightmare dungeons (high level)

I know I've tried playing a build that I really liked, one that I had a GREAT unique or legendary for, then hit a wall, couldn't get it going at all. Then I went and looked at a build and made one or two equipment changes and a skill change, and suddenly I'm mopping the floor with everything. Skills that I wouldn't have looked twice at that have a hidden (or muddled, at best) synergy with a simple piece of equipment that I'd already salvaged half a dozen times, and BAM! It really can make that much of a difference.

Now, my question is are you playing with your old 50 Barb from the original? If so, PLEASE restart a new toon. The old stuff is considered "legacy" now, which means you can't upgrade anything, and you're pretty much stuck with your old stuff and it's out-of-date stats.

I’ve been super busy at work but playing and enjoying when I can.

I started a new Spiritborn that I’m using my own poison/centipede build on and destroying everything pretty easily. So easily that I haven’t watched any YouTube guides on the expansion yet. I’m in the early 50s and haven’t finished the story yet.

I really haven’t had to customize any gear yet. I just compare drops to what I already have. I’m gaining levels so quickly that I outgrow items pretty quickly.

Its time to up the difficulty again. A few days ago I was walking out of town and dying constantly lol so turned it down 1 notch. Now I walk out without fear. I see those orange circle events and just wade into them and stand there while my army of bones takes everything out. SO I know its time to die again :) Back to EXPERT I think it is.

I also see my character gain a lot of PARAGON points while out fighting. Im not even sure what those are for. Are they the ones Im spending on that boost board? Like +5 int +damage +speed? IF so I have a lot better character thanks to that board.

I am in full legendary or unique armor and wep and focus and jewelry now. I still find a better one. I really hate having to lose a unique to a legendary but its what must be done. I simply collect yellows to salvage now. I seem to lean into minion attack speed and damage and forgo all the stuff that changes or adds say shadowdamage to stuff. Im not sure why Id want that anyways. Harder to choose new items though I must say.,

First of all; my go to male character name in a game is Scruffy.

Yes, paragon levels give you points for that board.

On another note. Is there a good guide anywhere to find out how to maximize gear. I mean gems are easy but everything else seems new and complicated. I would like to get up to Torment level one but I really haven’t customized any gear at all so far.

Maybe I could double check my build too. I have a mostly centipede/poison build and hat seems pretty powerful but I’m sure I could tweak it to be better.

Well Im stuck. I need to increase my difficulty to torment but I cant do that until I run some place called The Pit.. It says I should automatically get that as a quest at lvl 60. Im lvl 73 and still dont have that quest. So that entire map area is blocked to me ....so stuck. Im not sure what to do. I can do side quest when I find them. And I can continue the story quest. But at the difficulty its set at its embarrassingly easy and Im not getting good loot for my lvl now. So WTF do I do?

The Pit is in Cerrigar. Go there and see if you can click on the obelisk that launches it.....not sure if there is a quest anymore. I think you have to work your way up level by level the first time in any season at least that is how it worked for me so you have 30 levels....also the Pit is the only way to level up your paragon board thingies.....not sure what they are called but you are going to want to get them leveled for torment levels

I haven't found a way to Cerrigar. Not yet..its fogged out on my map and when I tele to the nearest portal and ride and look around I have yet to find a way in to open that part of the map up. Maybe Im not trying hard enough..I log in and go look some more.

Actually scratch that Cerrigar is all open to me. Must have been thinking of another area. Ill see if I can find The Pit.

Ok Im to this point I think....
Location and Entry: To get into the Artificer's Pit, you need to hit World Tier 4 and complete a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon. Doing this will net you a Runeshard, and you need three of these bad boys to open the portal at the Artificer's Obelisk in Cerrigar, located in the Scosglen region.
Ive crafted nightmare dungeon keys. Used those keys and cleared 2 or 3 of those dungeons to completeness. But I still dont habe of those runeshards given to me. And I still cant up my difficulty.

I think your information is out of date on the Pit as there are no levels to nightmare dungeons anymore.....at least none that I can see..from MaxRoll

The Pit of Artificers is available after reaching level 60 in Cerrigar. You can acquire ‍Runeshards by completing different Endgame activities. You can consume these ‍Runeshards at the Obelisk in Cerrigar to open the portal to The Pit of Artificers.

I currently have over 700 runeshards so they do drop frequently

I'm pretty sure all you need to do is hit lvl 60, but I've also completed the main campaign and the DLC.

Same. I'll probably do it eventually, so if anyone from OO wants to try it tonight I'd be down.

Im well past lvl 60..Im like paragon 80 I think. Ive finished the main campaign but I haven't finished the DLC. Its so easy I was hoping to up my difficulty first to get better loot. Guess I could pay old Mephisto a visit and finish it all up then see.

Yeah, I enjoyed the story of the DLC, and the spiritborn class is great, as well.

Reach Level 60

The first step to accessing the pit is to reach the new max level of 60. Upon doing so, you will automatically receive a Priority Quest that will serve as an introduction to the Pit.
Complete The Pit of the Artificer Priority Quest

Finish the Priority Quest called The Pit of the Artificer in order to gain access to the Pit. This can be easily done, as you only need to teleport to Cerrigar and interact with the obelisk found near the town's center.

List of Priority Quests
Use Artificer's Stone On the Obelisk

To enter The Pit, you must interact with the Artificer's Obelisk and use tokens called the Artificer's Stone, which can be obtained by completing Whisper Bounties and Nightmare Dungeons or participating in Helltides or Legion Events.

Dude...that was like a full-on tutorial. I wish someone had explained it to me that well before I stumbled on it back in Season 5 and got my arse handed to me by a swarm of level 120 mobs.

Well done!

So I've transitioned from one build to another with my Spiritborn, and I think I've hit my final build. Once I got the Kepeleke staff, I stared with a Stinger/poison build and that carried me through the early hard levels, then switched to Evade, but that was right after they nerfed it and my other one was better. Then I found a great Rock Splitter Thorns build that took me from Penitent all the way to T3 where I hit another wall, so I respecced into the Quill Volley and I'm pretty much melting everything in my path. I still have some masterworking and better tempering to do, but after I polish up my equipment I'm going to switch to T4 and give it a shot.

Have you tried clicking on the pyramid/obelisk in Cerrigar?
