Yeah, that naughty snow really nails it. Great way to celebrate the Christmas thing that is rapidly approaching.

I've taught my daughter to mock and be disgusted at all of the neighbors who have Xmas shit up now. Wife is really putting on the hard sell to the kids to get them to embrace the idea of moving to the Philippines (my daughter is going with her in January, and among things on the itinerary is her sitting in on a second grade class there). She's primed to be supremely upset when she discovers they put up Xmas decorations on September 1.

You mean Lapu Lapu Day, when they celebrate the chief who killed Magellan?

We’re one of those families that start putting Christmas decorations up right after Halloween. Typically we stick to decorating the inside, and I’ll do the outside lights Thanksgiving weekend. But we’ll be out of town next week so decided to get an early start on the outside lights.

This is our first Christmas in the new house, and there are several neighbors who had Christmas stuff up before we did.

I dont think they make Thanksgiving lights. I know they make Halloween light now...which I find stupid. You only need Christmas lights and for Christmas. Id say put up the Christmas light the week of thanksgiving.

Okay. Though my point was, why would the neighbor want to put up Halloween lights on 11/1?

Or... are you asking why the neighbor didn't already have Halloween lights up, and then just leave them up?

My neighbor had Halloween decorations up on at some point in Halloween and the morning of 11/1 they were all removed and replaced with Xmas lights.

I guess I'm just old and grump because wishing everyone a Merry Christmas a month before is confusing to me.

Something something something, precious present.

Oh, geeze - just let people do what makes them happy. There's little enough of that going around these days for me to want to deny it to people just because of an arbitrary date.

I put up Halloween lights and decorations every year starting Oct. 1.

This year I had a lady from up the street walk up to me as I was taking them down and she told me that her kids (who are toddler age) look forward to my display every year. They would walk up 2-3 evenings a week to look at the lights, and they were hoping I'd put up more for Christmas.

I do it for the kids. Before I had kids, I didn't do a lot of decorating, but once mine were old enough to appreciate it, I went all out. And now that they're older and don't care as much, I still do it because there are new generations of little kids that love the lights. I don't give a crap whether the adults like them or not.

This year I got some Govee (smart LED) outdoor lights I'm going to try. We got the Christmas tree lights last year and they were a big hit, so I'm anxious to try the outdoor ones. I still haven't gotten up the nerve to install the semi-permanent light strips, so this is going to be a potential trial run for those.

This. I used to be a curmudgeonly butt about xmas lights. Then my wife left the tree up all year, because she likes the low white lights on it for mood lighting.

Now I don't care and I try to let people be happy no matter how much their existence annoys me. ;)

I could use more happiness too, while I'm at it.

My tree had been up since 2018. It went out for trash collection due to my unwanted residents.

It seems you don't understand the level of peer pressure imposed by early adopters in a neighborhood that is an annual destination in the area for those wishing to see excessive light displays.

This year, I have an excuse. My recent surgery means I have no business climbing on ladders putting up lights all over the house. Probably we'll just throw some strings on the bushes and trees in front of the house. Because it seems we are hosting a shit ton of people for Football and Turkey Day, I did purchase an Xmas shrubbery festooned with holiday decorations that I placed on the front porch wine table.

And I felt like a tool for doing so, but the wife will be pleased.

Its only peer pressure if you let it get to you :D

As for holiday lights. All sides of my family always put up outdoor lights along the roof edge and in bushes. Dad never let a year pass without putting up lights. He loved it. After he passed it just was never the same again. I put up lights here. And we all put up window candles. Those seem to be a thing of the past now. But in the 80s houses were lit off with window candles or red or even blue. Dad loved blue ones.

Me I haven't done anything in many years. But I have my eye on some from Govee. They are outdoor led light strips you put up and never have to take down. They dont show from the street unless on . And the app lets you change the colors and the patterns for any holiday. So like you can make them Halloween colors for Halloween then some fall or Thanksgiving colors. Then Christmas colors of blinking and running red and green or whatever. And during summer or off seasons you can simply use them as diffuse warm soft glow white lighting to set off your house or as security to light up around it. I think they are amazing and the only thing holding me back from getting them is money and my physical ability to climb a ladder and get them up. But once up they can stay and never have to take down. They're water proof so you put them up once and leave them forever. No more ladder climbing.

Here's what I mean....

Imagine Valentines pinks.

Govee RGBIC Outdoor Neon Rope Light

Enlarge Image Enlarge Image

Heres 3 videos that I think give you a good idea what they look like up and running.

This one you can watch it all to see how they put them up or just skip to the end to see them up and running.

This guy does a good detail on both how to install them good and how they look after on.

Also these are the outdoor RGBIC rope strips lights. Govee also sell a permanent outdoor LED holiday light kit that uses a different type and spaced LED bulb set string to leave up...about the same effect but I prefer the smooth blending and running rope light stuff to individual bulbs. Although each LED bulb is RGB for multicolors.

My son is in the Lego club at school. We can get him a $100 kit and he'll finish it off in a few hours, never to be used again.
