It's supposed to start raining overnight and continue until we get 1.5" or more. That will be our first significant rainfall since August. Not enough to end the drought but will at least tamp down the fire warnings for a while.

As things begin to turn for the year, it's nice to have stuff cooking all day and warming the house, rather than wanting to avoid cooking to avoid cooling the house. It's sweet potato and crock pot chili season!

We got some snow this morning which was really cool for us recovering Floridians. It was supposed to miss us, but it was snowing pretty good for a couple of hours. Nothing stuck to the ground, but my wife and daughter got to enjoy playing outside while I was stuck at work.

You're going to have to change your location info as I got rather confused to read that Port St Lucie got snowmsteelers wrote: Fri Nov 22, 2024 6:29 pm We got some snow this morning which was really cool for us recovering Floridians. And the weather has bit me in the butt a couple of ways. After Milton destroyed my patio cover which tore up part of my pool heating solar panels we had the panels removed so we could get the main house roof replaced. Main house roof got done last week, all good. Pool solar panels got repaired and reinstalled yesterday, all good too... but not. This morning was pretty cool, in the forties. The solar panel on the roof was dribbling water at one of the connectors. Contacted the company that reinstalled the panels, haven't heard from them.
Noticed this afternoon that the pool level was low, so put in a couple hours of water from the hose, then left to go shopping and then worked around the house. Just checked, I lost about two inches of water level in about three hours . That's more than eight hundred gallons.
This is weather related because for the past few years it seems like as soon as the pool temp dropped into the sixties (which it was this morning) I get some minor leak. But this is a stonking major leak. And of course I discovered it just after American Leak Detectors closed their office and won't be back in till Monday
I know, first world problems. But I needed to vent

I tried to post an image of a weather radar map from where my nephew lives in upstate New York but Imgur ate it.
He said he is supposed to get 81's of snow!..He even sent pics of the snow already on the ground. Amazing stuff.

I read yesterday that an arctic blast + record warm lake water = epic lake effect snow, which is Buffalo's claim to fame. Sounds like they're getting it as expected.Daehawk wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 7:25 pm I tried to post an image of a weather radar map from where my nephew lives in upstate New York but Imgur ate it.

Lake-Effect Snowstorm Stranded Hundreds of Cars in Feet of Snow This Thanksgiving Weekend
Black Friday turned into a white weekend in the Great Lakes area of the U.S. thanks to lake effect snow conditions. AAA said a record 80 million were traveling by plane, train, and automobile this holiday weekend, however, weather warnings in the Great Lakes area have brought much of that travel to a standstill. Some areas saw as much as 50 inches of snow dumped onto their doorsteps, and several more inches were expected to keep coming through Tuesday.
CNN reported that more than 70 percent of the U.S. will experience freezing temperatures this weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) specified that from the Northern Plains to the Ohio Valley and the eastern third of the country, temperatures would be 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit below the average. Within the chill zone, three states (Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York) were issued lake effect snow warnings and, whew, did that snow certainly come.

I just got a ton of food. So as long as the power stays on, I'm good. But as of now, we just have the coldish weather. Not much snow. It's been cold enough to give me an excuse to stay inside, which has put a cramp on my activity levels. I need to force myself out to walk/jog but windchills in the 10s is just killing the vibe on that. Maybe tomorrow...

Wow.
No snow in the forecast in Philadelphia, although tonight's low is 23 degrees. This is a big shift from what has been a very warm October/November so far.
Halloween was 79 degrees. Ten days ago we still had highs in the 60s and lows in the mid-50s.

Yeah, that happened in Ontario as well, where a large part of a highway stranded people on it for up to 10 hours because it hadn't been plowed. Still more snow to come from what I hear.jztemple2 wrote: Sun Dec 01, 2024 6:38 pm Lake-Effect Snowstorm Stranded Hundreds of Cars in Feet of Snow This Thanksgiving Weekend

Re: O, the weather outside is...
We've only had the one light snowfall, but it's still out there. This is novel to me, because in Braintree snow usually melts within a day or two of falling. Braintree's average elevation was around 150' above sea level; here in Pittsfield, we're at 1,200' and the temperature is consistently about 5 degrees colder. Having a persistent snowpack is going to take some getting used to. For one thing, my Miata isn't going to leave the garage very often.

Hope you have a vehicle with snow tires on it.
And the particular highway I mentioned only just reopened this morning after the clearing of snow.

We've off to Fort Myers on the southwest coast of Florida tomorrow. My wife and I (humorously) complain that whenever we seem to go somewhere it's the hottest MM/DD that they have had in years . Not this trip. When we leave the theater tomorrow at the close of performance it's going to be about 48 degrees with the wind chill. And when we visit the MOTE Aquarium in Sarasota the next day it won't even be up to seventy. Well, the cold never bothered me anyway but my wife is a born Florida girl and gets the shivers when it drops below eighty

I guess I've lost enough weight that night time cold is getting to me. I moved the night time thermostat from 58 to 62 this year and today I made the great big decision from move from 62 to 63 (such an odd temperature to set. Nearly inconceivable) I guess we'll see how cold that is tonight. I might also start wearing comfy sweats to bed... Might... The more nekkid I am while sleeping, the more comfortable I am.

i feel like this should have gotten a bit more attention in the national media. the towns on the western slopes of the Cascades got hammered with hurricane force winds. was out in Issaquah and there were trees down everywhere and the town didn't have power for several days.

62 is where I keep mine - but I close my bedroom door and turn the intake fan on, baffled based on the outside temps. I prefer the bedroom in the mid to low 50s when I sleep (although I accidentally left the fan on the other day and it got down to 41 in there...)LordMortis wrote: Tue Dec 03, 2024 1:53 pm I guess I've lost enough weight that night time cold is getting to me. I'm all the way comfortable in bed. I don't wear clothing to sleep unless I'm away from home and in the presence of others. Colder just means more blankets, and there's nothing I find quite so satisfying as sleeping in a 53 degree room under a big pile of blankets. The more nekkid I am while sleeping, the more comfortable I am.

Our school just called its first 2-hour delay of the season in eastern CT. We have 4-5” of snow on the ground as of now and it's still falling. Fortunately, I'm off from work today, so dealing with driveway cleanup and getting kids to school late isn't a problem.

Re: O, the weather outside is...
Made the trip up to Muskoka on Sunday - clearly had to avoid Hwy11 and took the 400 bypass and then looped back East through Port Carling to just just North of Bracebridge. Roads were fine but where I was snowmobiling there was a good solid 2 feet of snow.
They got another 1-2 feet overnight into Wednesday (yesterday) - gorgeous to look at but clearly hell for those stuck on the highway.
What isn't being really reported on is the truckers who lack all sense of critical thinking who blindly follow GPS and try to take the farm roads on either side of Hwy11 and became stuck or drove into the ditches causing more mayhem. Locals are less than pleased............
PS - that thumbnail image from YouTube is not from Hwy11 or anywhere around Muskoka
While feeding all the beasties out back I let a nice big fart. The smell followed all the way back to the house. It's like it was my baby and felt abandoned.

We're snowed in. Approx. 7" on the ground and it's still coming down full force. I hope our plow guy doesn't come until it stops...but we ain't going anywhere until we get plowed out.
I read that Pittsfield averages 78" of snow per year (vs. 42" in Boston) but has underperformed that benchmark for each of the past five years.

And yeah, there had to be warnings posted against taking detours, as those roads they were taking as detours were not plowed.

I just noticed that most of the squirrel nests are built very high up in the trees this year, around here.
Curious what other people are seeing.
The old rule of thumb is that if the nest are up very high, the winter will be mild.

Nobody's announced it yet so I'll be the first to declare our drought to be over after we got 10" of snow and several days of rain, with more forecast. Not hearing anything about the wildfires, either.

Have to wait till Thursday for the latest update to the US Drought Monitor.
We've been pretty dry here but that's normal for this time of year. The slow warm-up we've been having ends after a cold front zooms through tomorrow, but the cold will last only a day, followed by some nice days with temps in the seventies.

It's freezing rain out and we had tickets to Alamo Drafthouse (The Longest Yard - Burt Reynolds) and it's parking lot pinball out there since the parking lot is on a slope.
I parked way out at the far end of the lot.
It took me a long time to make it to the salted entry area.
I nearly fell several times and had to dodge a car that slid through the end of the row.
Hopefully I'll find an undamaged car when we leave.

Quite a sacrifice to make to watch a Burt Reynolds movie
O/T, but my wife told me years afterwards that one of the reasons she was attracted to me was that I resembled Burt Reynold, I even had the mustache. I loved that mustache
Meanwhile, we spent the day at Sea World Orlando. Cool with a breeze, many folks in jackets, but I kept to my tropical shirt and shorts . My wife was on the scooter all day and in a jacket for most of it. Being a Florida girl she gets cold when it drops below seventy . It had been about twenty or thirty years since we were last there, but the wife wanted to see all the Christmas stuff. Hopefully it will be another twenty to thirty years before I go back
The plan is to drive to Atlanta two days before Christmas to see relatives there. The 10 day forecast doesn't quite cover that day, but the day before will have a high of 42 and a low of 25. I might even have to wear long pants

Winter for us is usually part of the dry season except for the occasional front coming through. Oddly however, our forecast for the next week is for a chance of rain every day . It will be welcome, this is the time of year the lawn struggles to survive. Also, our average high around this time is in the low seventies, but we will be in the low eighties by mid-week

It was noticeably not rainy year until late October this year. As someone who isn't a farmer, I was pretty happy with the amount of time I spent outside without thinking about the weather. Air pollution was low. Humidity was low. Temps were not extreme. Food pricing is already up in ways I can't even compare anymore, so I can't tell what's from strange seasons and what's from inflation, energy inflation, nor greed. But I've enjoyed the weather for the most part.

We were planning to be in Atlanta this week, but an illness in the family (theirs, not ours) meant our trip was cancelled. So instead we are enjoying being at home with temps in the seventies and partly cloudy conditions. It's a shame the pool is still out of service, it would be nice taking a dip on Christmas day.
